Hikaru is world class. He is giving us tips that only elite players can conceive of in OTB games. This window he is opening for us will be of great use to developing players who may reach the GM level later. It's about intuition, or a sixth sense, we should all be using in our own games (even as club players).

    • @TopBigMike

Nah all of our purposes are to spread gods word. Chess is secondary even to hikaru, with that being said he does an amazing job doing what he does

With a day off locked up, I suspect Magnus thought the challenge of pushing through a potentially winning but (maybe) technically drawn end-game would be useful for his fitness in this event. Hard to say. He's taken draws in winning positions before when it guaranteed him overall victory..

One thing I want to mention, in case you didn't watch the Magnus interview. He said that Invachuk offered him a draw at around move 30 or something but he felt that the position was interesting and wanted to continue. That is why probably Invanchuk started moving fast, he just wanted to be done with the game.

25:41 On Bc1, 3 or 4 moves before this position, Ivanchuk actually offered Magnus a draw. In the post-game interview, Magnus said he kept playing for 2 reasons, the ranking on the one hand, and he felt good about playing the position on the other, no risk, good winning chances… He made the right choice… at the expense of Ivanchuk for whom it's cruel…

It's hard to fault hikaru for losing tbh...he still plays these classical tournys but he's not super into it. That being said, he's number 3 in the world atm, not so shabby for not taking it as serious as he could. Even Magnus said he has no idea why he's playing this tourny as he hates classical chess cause it's so boring.

Watched the game live, then watched Agad, and then Gotham and finally Hikaru for these 2 matches! Hikaru still managed to not only peek my interest but gave an entire new perspective to the game - arguably most realistic, and principled with sound reasoning! Nothing against others but most recaps glorify great moves to be God like, while Hikaru being the top player himself explains the psychology behind the moves that no other streamer really can! It feels more human and connected to watch Hikaru! No exaggeration, just plain good ol’ chess! Great job man!
