@@mathunit1 the problem with video game movies is that there is a fine line between taking too much from the source material (stuff like the Mario brother and shit) and more commonly, the ones that take very little (assassin's Creed [which I still believe could work as a rennisance set tv drama], the tomb raider movies (except the new one which was alright) etc.)
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, The Angry Birds Movie 2 and the Sonic movies (both 1 & 2 in 2022) are the only video game film adaptations that have a fresh Rotten Tomatoes Score each, so that means something.
Ironically angry birds 2 doesn’t follow any of the game’s story, it’s a new one. (Yes I play angry birds, I know that only Rio, Star Wars, Stella (it counts), and maybe space, have a different “story” than the rest discounting transformers and go)
I feel like animated series are the best way to capture video games. They have more time to cover large storylines and can capture the feel of video games better with their art styles.

I see that they’re making an Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland and I do actually have high hopes for that. I also think if they’re turned Spider-Man PS4 was made into a movie it would be the best Spider-Man movie ever made.

To add to the "this one wasn't that bad" comments; The first 'Tomb Raider' wasn't some filmmaking masterpiece, but it was a good adaptation of the source material. Complete with the puzzles and action of the games, even the story. To add to the "this is also a good example of video game elements in non-adaptations" comments; 'Dredd' is built with literal levels the hero needs to overcome, with mini-bosses on the way, and the big boss at the end. 'Snowpiercer' has a slimier structure, but also explores it's world like a videogame where every new level expands our understanding of this world in a bioshock-y way

I liked Sonic when I first saw it but then I thought about it more and was like “Dude that was shit its not even a Sonic movie, legit just put some fast alien there and its the exact same, literally nothing is true to the source material, oh and they copied the Days of future past scenes (i actually hated that even when I first saw it)”
Because some, perhaps even most, directors are so pretentious. They direct and/or write video game movies, yet act as though the source material is beneath them. Same goes for comic book movies. Like Nolan pretending he had never read a comic book in his life even though his trilogy is lousy with plot elements, obscure characters, events, and even some lines/dialogue from the comics. But then again, who cares if he's a liar. He makes good movies. Edgar Wright is a very capable writer/director who doesn't take himself too seriously. He's very creative as well. I think he (or someone like him) can make a decent video game movie.
Well one...the directors need to play the game. And like the video said its going to take hours. And second....why would you make a movie based on something you already played. No one will get to see something you already know whats going to happen

dc just needs to stop with the live adaptation and focus on the animated ones. they are so much better. and with a little bit more budget for them...can make it even greater
I think the original ME trilogy could be converted into a 6 season show, with each season covering half the worlds and missions from the games. S1 Finale: Virmire S2 Finale: Battle of the Citadel S3 Finale: Horizon S4 Finale: Suicide Mission S5 Finale: Rannoch(Or Tuchanka, either would work) S6 Finale: Battle for Earth. All they'd have to do is make the sidequests more flushed out for filler, and write a better ending, boom, you have a series. Maybe give Shepard the Colonist/Ruthless background, so they can have development and a character arc through the series.

Here is what I have learnt while playing No Man’s Sky and listening to this; with the right writer and the game devs and not produced by a major company, they could make No Mans Sky into an amazing movie with all the lore and characters. (this is just my lesser opinion though, so don’t take my word for it) Edit: I capitalized No Man’s Sky and I would like to add that it will take place across multiple movies if they want it to make the story and characters better
Uh, did you guys forget silent hill. While not perfect, that movie did a really good job of enveloping the atmosphere of the videogames while telling a compelling B story

I thought the first Angelina Jolie tomb raider was alright. Also, I liked the doom movie, and the first person sequence in it is still one of my favorite movie moments.
Mortal Kombat was great but in its own way. It was such a controversial game it would of had to of been a cinematic masterpiece to of made a dent in movie purist opinions.
Why do gamers have a blind spot to the fact that most games are poorly written (and don’t even get me started about the “ACTING” lol) when compared to good movies?
I mean, some games have great stories and are good written (eg mass effect trilogy, knights of the old Republic, Arkham series). But thing is most video games adaptions have tried to adapt the most popular games and not the most "cinematic" games

You know how there's B-movie cult classics? Like they suck and you know they suck, but whatever, you still like it anyways? That's exactly how I feel about Mortal Kombat, Super Mario Bros, the first Tomb Raider, and the Tron reboot. Everything else is unbearable brain-bleaching garbage though...

Advent Children is a sequel to a video game, not an adaptation, there was no Advent Children video game prior to it's creation. It's simply an original story thay continues the story from a video game
yeah, so have I. But i have never touched the video game sequel to advent children, Dirge of cerberus sounds weird, but its like what sega did to shadow the hedgehog. they took a character who is all edgy and dark, and made a shooter out of it, and the game itself it not great, the story had almost nothing to do with the og final fantasy 7, and the only part that interested me was genesis from crisis core is still alive. The other then that, it sounds dumb!
Assassin's Creed movie was not bad. Though the story was different, they captured the elements of the games. A second part is in the works, hope it will better
Detective Pikachu actually had pretty good visual effects, but the plot was poorly written, and a lot of the movie seemed to drawn out. The main villains plan/endgame was inane. They could have turned it into a masterpiece, but instead we got a kid who’s father died but not really so he teams up with fluffy Deadpool to catch a kitty wizard who got into a fight with knockoff Charles Xavier and a bunch of monkeys and ninja frogs. And there’s a telepathic Duck as a ‘quirky side character’.
Although you do have to give it to Doom the Doom movie wasn't half bad some of the characters in it were cool and fun to watch, Karl urban and the rock were great in that movie and some scenes like the first person sequence, the fight between Karl urban and the rock and the first shot fired by the BFG have stuck with me for years. it gets a bad rap but it it's actually pretty decent and much better than things like the tomb raider movies. Silent Hill sucked but I actually quite likes the original resident evil movie plus apocalypse along with mortal Kombat but I could just be looking back on them with rose tinted nostalgia glasses
I really wish one day I get to make a live action Assassin's Creed film. I have the ideas, the characters are my emotions, and I'm good at visual design.
Remember: Even Mortal Kombat (1995) was a massive cultural success until ten years later when we looked back and said "Holy shit, that was actually awful".

I think if Hollywood wants to make an effective video game movie they must choose a property that's not convoluted with plot elements. Video games such as Punch Out and Rampage could work for they have little story beyond what's presented, allowing directors to expand as they see fit.

Why do gamers have a blind spot to the fact that most games are poorly written (and don’t even get me started about the “ACTING” lol) when compared to good movies?
I mean, some games have great stories and are good written (eg mass effect trilogy, knights of the old Republic, Arkham series).
But thing is most video games adaptions have tried to adapt the most popular games and not the most "cinematic" games

Advent Children is a sequel to a video game, not an adaptation, there was no Advent Children video game prior to it's creation. It's simply an original story thay continues the story from a video game

But i have never touched the video game sequel to advent children, Dirge of cerberus sounds weird, but its like what sega did to shadow the hedgehog. they took a character who is all edgy and dark, and made a shooter out of it, and the game itself it not great, the story had almost nothing to do with the og final fantasy 7, and the only part that interested me was genesis from crisis core is still alive. The other then that, it sounds dumb!

Detective Pikachu actually had pretty good visual effects, but the plot was poorly written, and a lot of the movie seemed to drawn out. The main villains plan/endgame was inane. They could have turned it into a masterpiece, but instead we got a kid who’s father died but not really so he teams up with fluffy Deadpool to catch a kitty wizard who got into a fight with knockoff Charles Xavier and a bunch of monkeys and ninja frogs. And there’s a telepathic Duck as a ‘quirky side character’.
Although you do have to give it to Doom the Doom movie wasn't half bad some of the characters in it were cool and fun to watch, Karl urban and the rock were great in that movie and some scenes like the first person sequence, the fight between Karl urban and the rock and the first shot fired by the BFG have stuck with me for years. it gets a bad rap but it it's actually pretty decent and much better than things like the tomb raider movies. Silent Hill sucked but I actually quite likes the original resident evil movie plus apocalypse along with mortal Kombat but I could just be looking back on them with rose tinted nostalgia glasses

I think if Hollywood wants to make an effective video game movie they must choose a property that's not convoluted with plot elements. Video games such as Punch Out and Rampage could work for they have little story beyond what's presented, allowing directors to expand as they see fit.
