I think the impressive thing is that he worked with Prof. Richard Axel, not just the SOP. This applicant has worked with Nobel Laureates. Would you agree that MIT and these top institutions focus on who the students have worked with in the past as well?
I didn’t know that! Thank you for sharing. They do not focus on who you worked with. It’s all about what your research experiences are and how those have prepared you for a PhD. Fit is also really important. I always tells people to name drop your mentors and supervisors names in the SOP because you never know if a committee member worked with them or knows who they are. That doesn’t guarantee you admission, but it can get you a second look or a closer look at your application. The committee looks at the entire application and not just who you worked with.
