I would fade a mix buss pre master buss. If you have to have a long fade the master buss is pre signal chain so you would be feeding your mix buss compression and signal path with a decreased amount of signal. Better to put your processing on a mix aux and fade the aux pre master.

And I agree, I actually create my own “master bus aux” rather than using a master fader for that reason (shown above the master fader in this video, but I didn’t really want to go into routing too deeply in a more beginner focused video). The other thing to account for is if any of the plugins on your final chain have a noise floor (which a lot do) - gotta make sure that noise floor also gets faded all the way down to infinity.
