Yo yu a youtube goat out here always droping all the gems i would be super appreciative if yu did a video on recording with effects Sometimes i feel im over mixing when i record into pitch correction and eq i also here people say reverb but i think i got it confused please HELP ME DEVVON
thank you for the pro advice, man! been at it for over 20 years....finally getting back to FL thanks to a video of yours i watched a while ago, at random. teaching this ol' dog MANY new tricks!
Devvon would you recommend using 2 preamps bridge together 1 using 48v phantom power for the mic and the other amplifier in line mode no phantom power to get a good quality sound just curious.
I just bought my first external preamp and came back to this video, haven’t seen anybody else explain setting the specific levels that way. I can’t tell you how useful this is 💯💯
This is the BEST tutorial I have EVER seen. I've been recording for years....and I've done ok with my home vocal recording.... BUT..... this explains what's going on....THANK YOU.
For me, -16db to -12db for me being a BELTING style singer high dynamics, etc... Sing the highest or dynamic parts and adjust... Great tutorial, Devvon!!
I won’t lie I’ve known from your numbers and tutorials u were a quality artist but needed one more thing to push me to actually check ur stuff out. That freestyle seems to be that one thing I really enjoyed that man 🙌🏿.
I am truly proud of you bro. You explain things BEAUTIFULLY and extremely easy to understand. You talk as if you're talking to a friend who is not a tech-head! I'm impressed. And this comes from a Producer who took Tony maserati from Asst. Engineer to his very first engineering gig in NY at Sigma Sound back in the late 80's!! Damn.... feelin' old after saying that lol. I salute you young King.... and will continue to watch. FF
Again a very very very useful video that worths diamond.. I know you hear us Devvon, may you please make a video about your acoustic set up or placement and the foam inches you have (which one is better). And to finish do you suggest booth or no booth for home studio?👆🙏 I'm waiting on your help with that, I'm having a huge problem with the acoustic of my room. Thank you in advance
Proximity effect can also be determined on what type of mic you use, certain words etc and room treatment...was very frustrating for me on a song i was recorded which certain words had alot of proximity from my low end.... I also invested in a aston halo, and man that helped alot!!.. Love your vids bro, subbed🤙
Great work! So, I notice that your input on the Preamp is at about 3 out of 10. You give great guidance on how to use the Output control to get up to -10db. How do you decide the optimum level of the Input control?
To add on to this, I would LOVE to see a video on what you put on the singer/rappers vocals when tracking in a session. Also, how to get the best of your CPU while doing so (Related with your plugins) Amazing video, thank you!!
You have a good preamp sir that's why your raw vocals are so good and dynamically strong we can't achieve it with today's electronic preamps like focusrite etc
Man, even your "gibberish" sounds better than most of the stuff that people are putting out these days.. Ps.. Ive watched you come a looooong way on your journey... thanks for all the tips G! Keep grinding!... I'll be riding the wave with ya!
You still rocking with that 710? I'm looking at preamps to run with my Sony c-80 mic. I was thinking of picking up the 710 or maybe a Newton channel or 5211
Why not record as hot as you savely can to minimize the noise floor also during more silent passages and then reduce the volume in the DAW to enter the plugin chain at the optimal level?
Do you believe recording with compression is optimal? For instance, I am going Mic > Avalon 737 (compression) -> interface .. I use light compression on the Avalon, I am just curious since I have mixed feelings about it. A lot of my peers recommend it, some don't.
Ok I am using a AKG P120 with a focus rite 2i2. I’m bringing a beat into pro tools clip gaining it to -6. I then record my vocals on average around -12. My vocals are still so quite I can’t hear them well. What am I doing wrong?
good work as always. I was thinking, what about a tutorial about the input/output signal on EQs (like the ProQ3) and Comps (like the CLA76). I struggle a little cuz I don't know if I'm putting in a lot of the signal or not (and I didn't really understood what that means). Maybe someone else like me?.
Generally, I leave the input parameter on the EQ alone, and just make sure the output on the previous plugin isn’t coming in hot, and adjust the output on the EQ depending on the adjustments you’ve made. For example, if the signal on your EQ is coming in at -16db and you make adjustments on your EQ that raises your signal from -16db to -10db, You’d lower your EQ output parameter -4db to get back to -16db to compensate for the increase in volume. It’s just a gain staging thing. I’m not sure if that was what you were referring too, or if that answers your question.
@@blakeb8139 I've figured that out bro and yes, it was all about gain staging, it's a must know when we talk about mixing, but I discovered that after I understood what exactlt is gain staging . Anyway thank u for ur time!
hi i have an avalon 737sp channel strip running into an protools hd omni, i have an neumann u87 mic running into my avalon, should i run my avalon into the line input or into the mic pre input on the back?
Very helpful bro.. what db level should I record a guitar running directly in an interface? I’ve seen right up until clipping, I’ve seen -6db, I’ve seen -18db. So confused. Any tips?
Hey i love your videos! My mic forces me ti basically be kissing it if it receives input. I use a thunderbolt and the mic is supposed to be high quality. How do i get it si recieve input from farther?

I literally have watched 5-6 videos in a row and I feel I already have gotten so much better with my engineering. Thank you so much and God bless

This video hit the spot. No one is talking about the preamp levels. Input is too important.
Ultra important!!

ngl the "absolutely nothing" that you said was super fire😱😱😱
Protect Devvon at all costs!
Thanks for the video, my question is. What about the volume? Should we use the volume from the preamp or audio interface ?
Yo.. DT. Your really great . Love the vibes.

Yesss
This was seriously so clear and informative, no bullshit, thank you!
Ive always done 5-6 inches and -15db.
Gonna try 3-4 and -10db with my next client tommorow.
do a review of the 710 twinfinity there's a lot of hate online about them but I love mine

What the differences between Gain and level on the PreAmp . What bring out the color of the vocals.
You got some skills bruh. Great video. Excellent job explaining!
Your vocals sound already perfectly leveled to the beat…what exactly did you do for this sound?…
you killed it... you disturb my attention from listening to the chain to your singing :D
That new intro was dope💪🏽
Hi,
Have you ever received any ground loop from that UA twin finity, if so how did you solve it
Great video bro! So much Golden information you give to the people. Best TH-cam channel out! ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽
On how much do you set the gain on the audio interface? Because you set all the lvls on the pre amp.
So, are you using an aux channel sent to an audio channel to record all of your processing in real time?
Truth King. Keep it up. Been following your page for a long while. Dope.
Do you use a compressor on while tracking or only during mixdown? or both
can you please make a video explaining how to properly set up a line mic connection from your pre to your interface?
I Have A Tlm 102 Running Into A UAD Solo Still Haven’t Recorded A Song Yet Just Played Around With It 😂

I appreciate all the videos Devvon!! Very helpful. I’m a small channel starting my tutorials.
In this video are you using a compressor as well? Or just pre amp?

Why i always heard the most of the time to put the preamp level at -18db range ?
Fantastic info, thanks Devon

Hey! Don't u use the Alctron PF8 anymore?

Hey Devvon, is the AKG a Better mic then TLM 103 ? Because in the past you used the TLM..
Both mics are good. Different mics work better for different voice but you can eq any quality mic to sound good. Just takes a lot of practice.
outstanding explanation!! thx!
Do a video on using compression on vocals! Like eq and compression just to get a nice base for the vocal
I definitely have that on the channel just type in compression help me devvon
