Hi John, I'm an electronics guy. As you said, the LED"S being wired in series, the supply voltage from the power supply is divided equally among the LED's. When one goes kaput and you short it out, the voltage being applied to all the others goes up, and being that they are all the same age and make and now have excessive voltage applied, another will shortly burn out. Within short order they'll all go bad, the last few just being a quick flash. Also, a safety check for the lamp would also include a check from each prong of the plug to the metal of the lamp, to rule out a "short to the case" fault that, not being a 3-pin plug, would energize the lamp body. There should be no continuity between the plug and the body of the lamp. I really enjoy your channel and I really look forward to it coming out.
The reason it is so hard to solder is because it’s very hard to put enough heat into it. Those LEDs are mounted to a board that’s made of an aluminum substrate versus a standard board being made of FR4 (fiberglass). They use aluminum to sink heat away from the LEDs, so the solder doesn’t wet as it should until there is enough heat dumped into it.
Thanks Scout for another fantastic episode! Loved the humor of the "Reese Fowler" eyes, and, like most every episode, I learned new things that I can add to my knowledge tool box. Thanks!
The eyes were great! I watched the Solar Eclipse too and I found it to be fascinating especially since I have not seen a total Solar Eclipse since I was 9. The lamp and LED repair were great and very interesting. Thanks for sharing this.
There is just something about your eyes... I had an auto darkening welding helmet I thought I'd use to view the Eclipse but unlike 2017, it got dark enough that the solar cell stopped powering the darkening function. Next time I'll have to keep a flashlight handy.
I love your videos!! It kind of reminds me of sitting at my grandfathers feet and reading his old Popular Mechanics from the '50's while he dozed in his recliner.
Neat fix for the bulb, next time I throw one in the trash I’ll try to resurrect it. Newer LED’s have, as you pointed out earlier, much smaller to no heat sinks. We have one of the earlier ones with a very large set of cooling fins, it is in our basement and often burns continuously. Now seven years on it shows no sign of giving up, and in that time others not so solidly built have fizzled out. I’ll be on the lookout for a helmet. Thanks
The goop light will make a awesome lamp shade! Great idea I think Mr. John - have a great weekend- work has me all messed up...I'm not ine for change.. but I'm doing my best to roll with it...
Good one John. I believe the old school pro welders call that type of helmet a 'sugar scoop'. Nowadays the 'pancake' style iz popular for welding out of doors, especially with pipe line welders. Jeffandar
Those eyes!! 👀 The bulb repair was really interesting and the solder not sticking was strange. I’d like to see you put some kind of head strap in the welding helmet to bring it back to life. Thanks for a great vid.
We were in totality for the first time and it was amazing! Dances alone with rentals drove up to Cleveland from Maryland to see it in totality, as did my Aunt and Uncle. Afterwards we went for ice cream and I met a family that had driven 12 hours from Alabama to see it! The moment it goes from the tiniest little sliver of sun to totally blocked is downright biblical! The glasses were everywhere. We ordered them months ago for less than a dollar each. Work gave them out to everyone, the school gave them out to everyone. We had no problem having the glasses. I did consider using one of my welding helmets, but it was unnecessary. Also it was really neat to see an active solar flare during totality. You should have gone upstate to see the real deal.
It's always nice to find free things that we can use! And the LED fix was news to me. I appreciate learning that for emergencies. Totally unrelated to the video, I would like to say that I had a very bad experience with curb-discovered treasures. I once brought a very nice piece home that happened to have a nest of German roaches hidden inside. (I had never heard of them, but they are jet plane shaped, and I think were striped.) When we discovered them in our house, it took an exterminator 7-8 months to clear our home of the pests. My typical insecticide spray in our home would not begin to touch them. When you bring things into your home, check all the nooks and crannies for any signs of pests. Thanks for the video and sorry for the off-topic comment.
Tony- That is a major concern! Especially in my city- You have to be so careful of anything you take from the trash. Most times I leave everything I find on the outside porch for 24 hours before bringing inside. Plus I bang on everything just to see. Also German cockroaches are notorious for hiding in cardboard boxes!!! I know your concern very well because about 10 years ago my upstairs floor had fleas! 🫣 it was horrible. Had to bomb the house. However I think the worst is Bedbugs! That’s why I don’t bring furniture home! 😃👍
If you have another bulb, just replace the bad LED segment. I have a wooden lamp similar to that one that was my parents. The part the bulb is attached to is moveable up and down on the stand. I have found several lamps over the years, table and floor. There was a beautiful brass floor lamp left in the basement of our house in St. Louis that I rewired and got a new shade for. That blue lamp may be beautiful under the paint.
Also I glad to see you using that old Fiber Metal. Best on the market. The auto darkening helmets are two dark to see before you strike off. Stick with shade 11 with a clear lenses on either side of it.
John, a couple of thoughts on the difficulties soldering the jumper: -First thought is that the manufacturer may have used a higher melting point solder than your iron can deal with. Solder has been getting modified to remove the lead content, and some of the newer solders have a higher melting point. Also, it is not recommended to mix traditional tin-lead solder and lead free (dare I say unleaded) solder. -The second thing that I thought about is that there may be a heat sink underneath the LEDs, and that may be drawing heat away from the solder points, and your iron may not have enough power to heat the solder pads to the right temperature. Soldering is a lot more complex than most people think. On the surface, it looks simple. Clean metal, adequate heat, and just apply the solder to it. Behind all that, there are numerous details that can affect solder joint quality and reliability.
I was able to get up to Indianapolis, and had purchased shade 14 glass welding inserts a couple months ago. Worked very well. This was my third total eclipse, but first time seeing solar flares during totality. I hope to squeeze in one more...
Nice quick fix for the lamp and bulb. I have a lot of LED bulbs fail. I never get the x thousand hr "rated" life. Sometimes it is an LED, sometimes one of the components in the board converting AC to DC likely due to heat. Many LEDs are driven at higher voltage reducing the life a great deal. Bigclive has an interesting video on a special bulb made by Philips for the country of Qatar which runs the LEDs are lower voltage which gives much better efficiency and life of the bulb. Dave.
Like the tip on the bulb...watched the eclipse with that same hood, very cool...just picked up a monkey ward buzz box ( old )been a while but i have a few things to fix...practicing laying down a good bead got to learn the basics again been some time...7018 should be a easy rod to run..??....🖖
Very informative fix for the LED bulb. That Goop container would make a great shade if you didn't mind it being upside down by mounting it from the bottom.
You should use a resistor in the place of the dead led otherwise the other will be stressed to much and dies faster. The soldering problem is because it's a big heatsink
Nice welding helmet. I have a 110v welder. Too chicken to use. I know there are a million TH-cam how to weld videos. I would like to see a ScoutCrafter how to weld video. Great show today.
Nice save, are you buying a shade or waiting for another midnight flea market? Common sense you applied to the light bulb save. You show how to save money. It’s hard to believe what people throw out. My table beside my chair was at the free flea market sight. I saved over a hundred dollars. It only took a half hour to wipe it down and touch up great show thank you
Great video as always John. What is the best way to reattach the lens to the led bulb following the repair? Also, I showed the welding helmet footage to my grandson, he said you look just like Bender from Futurama; not going to lie I had to look it up via Google.
I live outside the track for the eclipse besides it rained. If there is an astronomical event I can tell with certainty it will be cloudy. That lamp could turn red or if you make a Goop shade then colors to match it.
You and the guy on Ouiter imits! I'd have to get a pancake helmet to weld with because I'd fog your kind up too much and end up holding them.Nice GOOP lamp too and no eyeballs were burned out here because of the eclipse. God Bless you, John!
Try some Visine for the eyes. 😂 For the LED repair, perhaps a conductive grease, the type used to protect aluminum conductor connections from oxidation, would work.
I'd love seeing that lamp in 4th of July style. I'm sure you'll make that just fantastic. Been a long time since we've seen some elephants trunk footage!
The reason those boards are hard to solder is because the substrate is aluminum vs fiberglass and acts as a heat sink. The LEDs in those bulbs generate an amazing amount of heat for how small they are and need that cooling to survive. They make an electronics hot plate that you set the board on and bring the whole thing to a higher temp so the rest of the board doesn't steal the heat from the soldering iron and spread it out.
with led a lot of people are unaware but you need to check for cri, that's the color rendering index, 100 is like the light from the sun, you need at least 90 to have a decent light , if its not specified at all, than it's most likely under that , 80 or lower, and that's crappy
You could use that trick on LED bulbs to make one just the right amount of brightness you need got a specific place if you can only find high output bulbs
Hey John, throw the bulb out 😂. Thats why i like the old incandescent bulbs, they either work or they don't. Nice light, I'd like to see you paint it black with gold pinstripes. I was thinking more of an aluminum shade to reflect light down. My screwdrivers are almost done.
Imao on your Martian Google eyes! I have a pair of -em too. That's Entertainment! I have fixed my led bulbs too, tks. You paid good money for it. Fix it.
You could throw some Loctite on the threads of that lamp ---BUT FOR GOODNES SAKES WHY? Salvage the cord; salvage the hollow tubing as a conduit, salvage the nuts maybe , rerclaim the weights, even the switch, BUT It's one butt ugly lamp, lol
If you ever find a bag full of cash on your walk, will you; a) take it home b) just leave it c) call the police d) give it to the first homeless people you see
Those goofy eyes gave me a hoot! Glad you got to use that welding helmet and enjoy the eclipse. Cool electrical tips on that lamp with the bulb also.
John you’re the best. You’re the comedic Mr. Wizard. I always enjoy your demos and your humor. Thanks for all you do.

You called it out correct at the end. In the trade we (I'm an x pipe fitter) call them welding helmets and not welding hoods.

Hey John, you're the best! I enjoy your shows every week!! I learn something new almost every show.
Good stuff, I never knew that about LED bulbs!
OK- the goop lampshade... I laughed out loud and thought "You are such a dork!" (that is something I might have done)
I didn’t like the blue lamp paint either until you put the goop shade on. The two matched perfectly…I’d have to leave it as is. 😊
i hope you write the date on that bulb and use it. let us know when it starts blinking again. that would be cool to know.

lol that’s funny 😊 elephant trunk show was open Sunday 4/7/24 . Did you go? I did look for you. It was very busy.
It was Cold!!! In the morning anyway, I am hoping to make it Sunday!
Good one today. I love diving into old LED bulbs
Nice welding helmet. I have a 110v welder. Too chicken to use. I know there are a million TH-cam how to weld videos. I would like to see a ScoutCrafter how to weld video. Great show today.

😂 Bender! The diffuser can be put back on with glue but RTV is what the pro’s would use. 😂😃
Great job John, I love that floor lamps color,,,,,just saying…….. James
That blue lamp would give you a 'Throw-Back ' lamp to the 1960's NYC Hippie Days.
Maybe if you sand the spot a little to ensure that there is nothing there but metal, it will solder easier?
I scraped it but I think it’s Aluminum so solder isn’t a good match
You crack me up John...glad you had fun with the eclipse 😅
Good show Mr Wizard
That’s awesome the way you fixed that light bulb! Great episode!
I live outside the track for the eclipse besides it rained. If there is an astronomical event I can tell with certainty it will be cloudy. That lamp could turn red or if you make a Goop shade then colors to match it.

I didn’t know Gwyneth Paltrow was making hand cleaner as well 😂 Goop!
Oh and those eyes got my morning started right..lol😂
The eclipse started out okay, but by 3:15 the overcast wouldn't even let it trigger my self-darkening welding mask.
Try some Visine for the eyes. 😂
For the LED repair, perhaps a conductive grease, the type used to protect aluminum conductor connections from oxidation, would work.
Thanks for showing the led fix! Good to know.

Hi John, nice lamp.👍😎
Love the bulging eyes! You should get yourself a spudger for opening LED bulbs and similar.
Glad you got to see the eclipse and so did I it was cloudy but occasionally there was some clearing in between and I did get a glimpse 👍
Great save, handy lamp !
Great job John! I love your show
I made a lamp shade from a plastic Folgers coffee can.
You literally made me lol today with the eyeballs. But you convince me to buy a Tesman multimeter, then you use something else to ohm out the lamp.😢
The Tesman has the same feature! I just have mine upstairs in my dining room work table. 🫣😂👍

LED bulbs are ok, but I prefer old school bulbs💡 Don't think you can buy them anymore. Occasionally I find them at estate sales .😊

Make a hole in the bottom of the gooop tub and fit it upside down - voila!
Now I gotta fix one just to see what the deal is with it being hard to solder.
I wonder why that tab is so hard to solder?

Yes- look at caption. 😃
Really interesting stuff with the light bulbs
That would make a great lamp cover god
