Great video as always! I think the reason many woodworkers prefer parallel clamps over pipe clamps, even though pipe clamps are stronger and cheaper, is because the black iron pipe can react with the glue and stain the work with Black oxidation.

    • @OldSneelock
      @OldSneelock 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You can cut a piece of pvc that will slip over the pipe. Cut about a third of the circumfrence so it will clip over the pipe. I make them about an inch long and then I clip on as many as needed. 😁😎

Hey Scout, yet another great video. In Australia we call them G clamps like they do in England while those bar clamps like the Bessy you don’t like we call F clamps and the long ones with the pipe we call sash clamps. Collecting Australian made clamps is my specialty and I wondered but never knew what the lugs on top of an F clamp were for. Now I know. Thanks my friend. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

    Thanks for the mention John.
I like clamps too. Most are from garage sales so they vary a lot.
I like that I can adapt the old or make new ones. A 2x4 and some wedges can tighten nearly anything. 😁

Very good tutorial. The problem with spring clamps is as you noted. You can't adjust the pressure on the work piece so you have to be careful about the one you use, or you could damage the workpiece. This is especially the case with delicate work. The vintage quick release clamp is very cool. They would be a nice tool addition. "Only a maniac would have one clamp or one hammer. " Very funny and a vintage SC comment. Thanks

One great trick to stop the wood sliding on the glue when you are trying to fasten two pieces is to sprinkle a little bit of salt on the joint. Salt crystals are cubes, they end up acting as indexing pins. As the clamp tightens the two pieces of wood and they want to slide, just a sprinkle of salt is enough to keep them aligned while the glue dries

Your Jet brand parallel clamps are usually called “K body” clamps, after the model name given to them by Bessey. They’re truly fantastic because their jaws are always parallel to each other. Kind of the opposite of the wood clamps you started with. So you’ll never put torque on something in a direction you didn’t intend. You can even hold a billiard ball in them, and they won’t let the ball slip out.

Worth a mention: You can swap the heads of a bar clamp, keeping them in the same orientation, and use them as an internal clamp. You can use them for pressing the heads/ materials apart... Kind of like a jack...

  • @lv_woodturner3899

I love my Jet parallel clamps. I have several lengths. I use them often. I have had them for decades. The plastic cover on the jaws feels like it is intended to prevent glue sticking to the cover. The clutch mechanism is terrific when using the clamp with the stationary jaw down. The moveable jaw stays put until you release the clutch.
In metalwork, I love my Kant clamp.
The deep jaw Bessey clamp you showed has a screw in the moveable jaw. The thread of the screw engages in shallow grooves on the bar. I love my deep jas Bessey clamps.

Well, this is a great subject and like you said; “a can of worms. Now let me tell about one of those Dewalt squeeze grip clamps that I came across. The large one are mostly plastic and while driving one day I saw one sticking out of a pile on the roadside. It was the $40.00 ones and it was broken. I took some JB weld and with some creative use of Kevlar fibers, I repaired it and it works like new. I would never pay that much for one of those but the thing has come in handy. I wish I had a dozen more but not at the price they sell for.

Ah, you're forgetting those little 1" C clamps that are made by starrett - so nice, and they have all those little numbers on the side of the moving bit for some reason - though I don't know what thats all about? I always borrow them and use 'em for welding, and knock'em back into shape with a hammer. Why is everyone so angry when I give them back? ;)

Sounds like I am going to have to have my collection of Irwin Quick grip clamps put into my will. They're about 30 years old and I have never had any problems with them. It's too bad the new ones are not as good. I store different lengths in 5-gallon pails so I can quickly get them to where I am working. I gave up on hanging them up I use them so often. Thanks for the tip on oiling the metal C clamps.

I probably have more than my fair share of clamps, and I totally agree with you about the small Bessey"s . They always let me down when I need them the most. Jorgenson/Pony are now a Chinese brand, and made there also. I do like the old ones made in USA. I recently picked up a set of the Jorgenson Pipe clamps meant for 1/8" pipe, kind of neat but have limited strength.

John you gave me a lesson on the jorgasons. My late father never gave me a lesson. Thank you. I will get his clamps for the next angle clamping job. I have cut the angles to make clamping possible. In a woodworking magazine they asked how many clamps do you have. I thought good question. After 200 I quit counting and kept my mouth shut around my wife. She doesn’t need more shoes or purses. I Have around 10 of the plastic quick grips, I’m just not a fan of clamping twice. The pony clamps ( pipe) are hard to beat. My last buy of these were at the flea market. 10 - 6 and 8 ‘ for 20.00. Who could walk past that giveaway. Thank You for sharing.

I'm a woodworker. I did carpentry for about 15 years with my dad. And I've been doing fine woodworking in my own shop for about 5 years now. Anyhow I've got a couple of those inexpensive Bessy clamps and the only thing there good for is. Since there cheap, you can grind the stop off the side of them. And then use them through the dog holes on your woodworking bench. To hold down protects in the middle of the table. Just my thoughts my friend. Btw the bessy parallel clamps, are the best clamps. There expensive of course. And Pony Jorgenson makes parallel clamps also there a little more price wise then the bessy and I've never used them. But I'm sure there great too. I haven't seen or heard much about the jet clamps either.

I I think the most important feature in bar clamps is when they have a flat back so you can stand them up on their spine. This makes glue-ups much easier. Bessey makes two different types of bar clamps, the one I prefer has a wide rectangle as each jaw. I personally prefer older gear so I just touch mine to the bench grinder to form a flat. The one other thing I think is worth noting is that clamps should always be bought in pairs or fours. It's much easier to keep a project square when all of the clamps match. While this is especially true for clamps, I am a big believer in many tools being bought in pairs or fours, there are so many different situations where being able to index the clamps is valuable.

I got the besseys like you showed with the release mechanism got them on sale a year or so back with the home depot holiday sales. I generally always pick up some more clamps come holidays time. Lowes had a bunch of Jorgensen or pony I believe on sale the bar clamps like the quick clamp, the spring clamps, and I believer parallel clamps which I picked up some of each. My only issue with the pipe clamp is I wish it had a larger face to it to secure larger material like I'm thinking of building a 2x4 workbench top I think the parallel clamps would be good for that but the pipe clamps are cheaper and easier.

Great show for us "clampoholics". I don't like pipe clamps because of the tendancy to flex under force. You might look at the new Bessy gear clamps that are a bar clamp that close by rotating a handle on the bar.

You should have given a shout out for Ticonderoga pencils. Still good, the only pencil we use in our luthier shop. Good erasers too.

I'll never forgive China for ruining the pencil! =D

I'm not a big fan of the Jorgensen style clamps when woodworking. They are indispensable on the milling machine, but I find them too fussy and slow for woodworking. I have found though, keeping one on the drill press makes a fantastic quick vise. I leave it loose, but it has enough surface area to index to the table, I use a 12-in, it's a great method for quick drilling, I generally leave the screws imbalanced, I find that this allows me to grip something in the vertical position quite well with just the weight of my hand to keep it steady. I use the clamp in a similar way on the bandsaw if I need to cut a very thin sheet, such as a veneer.

You have to admit they are so well made and fun to play with once you get the hang of them but like you they are too tedious to set up for most shop work.
