Because Mav saved Iceman when Hollywood was shot down. I was never in the military but I would think you will always remember the person that saved your life.
One of the unstated themes of this movie is the denial of Maverick's competence. He is clearly one of the best at what he does. And yet multiple two- and three-star admirals, throughout the movie, call him "obsolete". An "old relic". It is not until he has no choice -- when he is, in fact, grounded and ordered not to fly -- that he lives up to his call sign and DEMONSTRATES that he is the one they're looking for... and that they were idiots to ignore it all this time. I think it's one reason the movie is so popular. Many of us have felt this -- that we were useful, but that we were stuck doing a job that didn't make use of our talents -- and chafed at this. Many of us have longed to prove that yes, we do have worth... and that the ones telling us to stand down were wrong. Many of us have longed to hear, as Maverick hears just before the climax of the movie: "You're where you belong. Make us proud."
Yeah they already made him prove himself thirty years ago so it does seem redundant to demand he continue too even with all his accomplishments just for drama I guess why can't he just say do it yourself then if you don't respect me? Then it's hey iceman vouched for you emotional blackmail too.

There should be one final Top Gun Maverick. He should be a 2 star, Carrier CO or CAG, and he has to go in and get one of his boys/girls (whom was shot down) out from behind enemy lines, and going against the rules/senior admirals, he is forced to retire after saving the pilot and day in violation of the Rules/Admiralty.
the 3 star is cyclone. the 2 star is merlin. get all the details right. 3 star cyclone slowed his roll realizing full bird maverick has far more experience.
your competence take you only so far, your attitude takes your farther. Maverik has been protected by Iceman, else Navy hates people who disobey orders and direspect chain of command.
In the original movie Maverick was a Lieutenant. Naval officer ranks are different than all of the the other branches. O-1 through O-4 are junior officers: ensign, lieutenant (junior grade), lieutenant (this was Maverick's rank), and lieutenant commander. O-5 and O-6 are senior officers: commander and captain. O-7 through O-10 are flag officers: rear admiral (lower half) (one star), rear admiral (two stars), vice admiral (three stars), and admiral (four stars). A Lieutenant in the Navy is equal to a Captain in the Army, Air Force, or Marines. Now he is a Captain (O-6) which would be a Colonel in the Army, Air Force, or Marines.
Lol, the F-35 is such a trash plane it would probably send an email to the enemy before take-off with flight trajectory, armament, and the home address of the pilot. Then it would crash.
I just don’t like in the movie why they never made it clear why the admiral didn’t like Maverick. There should have been some character development there explaining it.
The admiral is professional and follows the rules because that's the only way he became admiral to begin with and Maverick, despite his achievements, basically lives to break rules and push boundaries. The only reason Maverick remained active is because Iceman was protecting him so the Admiral probably equivalates Maverick to a spoiled child whose constantly bailed out by his parents. It's one of those situations were you judge somebody based on reputation alone. Notice how the admiral seemed slightly impressed by Maverick's analysis of the canyon?

None of these people are believable for being part of any military. AWFUL acting. There are NO ORDERS once you're RETIRED... The flying scenes are fun in this movie, everything is is poor.
probably the most realistic part of the movie, as the gears of beuracracy grind slowly and usually always wait until the last minute, rarely if ever proactive.

You could see it when he finished that sentence and paused for a moment before continuing. Its so subtle yet so impactful for this scene. Great acting
Gotta love how one of the most common themes in fighter pilot stories is the intense rivalry. I find it interesting and quite laughable that the USN considers promotion history as a critical point of the military resume. It explains why Maverick is shut out as a potential candidate for a desk job. Maverick's just not a desk job kind of person. He is a hands on, on the job training, just do it type of person. Iceman clearly brought him back to work on a specific scenario that doesn't fit in the textbook.
As a Marine.... Imagine if your battle buddy is.... COMMANDER US NAVAL PACIFIC FLEET.. 2 People on planet Earth outrank him, The Chairman of the joint chief of staff, And the President.
Cyclone was caught in between two positions. One is that he adheres to the US Navy in terms of having set standards and pilots doing their job properly which Maverick did not with the test pilot program. Admiral Kazansky on the other hand is the superior of Cyclone and Cyclone is doing his boss a favor by accepting Maverick in a final role with the Navy when he should have been released. Hence Cyclone had put the point very clear across to Maverick that he was willing to obey the orders of Iceman who is now debilitated from terminal illness but yet spell out the seriousness of Maverick's situation that he is on his last legs of his career if he doesn't understand that he is now in a privileged position to continue flying.
Iceman outranks Cyclone. His “suggestion “ of Maverick may not have been an official order, but carried the weight of one…especially given Maverick’s actual combat experience.
What I actually find funny is Maverick got the same seniority as the Admirals. He is the same age as they and same skill level (maybe even better) and he got offer to be an Admiral many times. But, he turned down the Admiral position, because he like to fly and don't like to deal with politicians. But, the catch is that, now everybody else is his boss.
Maverick didn't start as an instructor till around 1995. He said almost 30 years ago meaning slightly less. However, if slightly more then at most, probably 1989. 3 years is too short to be an instructor. That's the case in the USAF and in the NAVY for all education Majcoms. Need 5 years minimal and your 7 level or commission equivalent. Shortest could probably be 1992. I taught pilots at Nellis Weapons School for two years when I was under AETC during my career in the USAF. I was enlisted though.
Maverick should've flown the Darkstar ahead of the strike team so he'll race with all the missiles at whatever mach speed is needed. Then the strike team can bomb the target with less danger.

I need to see an offshoot featuring Cyclone and Warlock
I dont understand all of the hate for Maverick in this movie. Just because he doesnt want to be a cushy admiral. He wants to fly. Everyone hates him for it.
"Rods from GOD" then a convenient dormant fault line slipped story. That should do it.
Cyclone was out of line. Talking about Goose like he didn’t know exactly who he was is a reason to go. I like the character but dude was out of line.
Don Draper is an Admiral!

It’s NEVER explained why Maverick is so hated among some of these top officers in the Navy.
It’d be nice to have that back story because as valuable a pilot as he is, he gets ZERO respect.
Doesn't it feel like a completely different movie than Top Gun 1?
its not the 80's anymore (sadly) so tone and cinematography have changed but it does feel like a love letter to the original. might even be my fav ever sequel right up there with Aliens!
I just realized. How that Uranium enrichment facility got leaked could be a movie plot on its own.
Rogue One: Maverick
@@shawnhilleboe8428 - McQuarrie did uncredited revisions on _Rogue One._
That is called Behind Enemy Lines. It was a good movie.
Little did Maverick know that for a brief amount of time, he wasn't the one who was going to come home from the mission.
It’s funny how the mission is almost the same as the one in Star Wars, when they had to bomb the Death Star
In organizations people like pushing other people’s buttons till they stop working, don’t they?
can't believe Jon Hamm talks to Tom like that, Tom is literally more powerful than him and easily fire him.
the 3 star is cyclone. the 2 star is merlin. get all the details right. 3 star cyclone slowed his roll realizing full bird maverick has far more experience.
You wouldn't want that kind of 2:13 weapons system sitting 100km away from your country would you??😉
Say no to war
There is always one CO that doesn’t like the hero
Who was it in the original??
In my opinion, it was Jester, perhaps not more discretely than Cyclone in this film.
That admiral wasn't pulling punches... All of this while insulting one of the best fighter pilots of all time...
your competence take you only so far, your attitude takes your farther. Maverik has been protected by Iceman, else Navy hates people who disobey orders and direspect chain of command.
@@prime8krish - But they sure like it when the talented guy brings home the bacon and makes them look good...
Or the second option is.....we could send a drone *credits roll*
Seems a weird way to go about the mission instead of a B-2 or a guided missile or something.
In reality they would just tomahawk the crap out of this facility and call it a day.
Navy wishes it had minds like this. Too political now people are afraid to make decisions
Wait a minute I thought maverick was a lieutenant because Charlie addressed him as a lieutenant
Thumbs Down for forced captioning. That should be up to the viewers
Hamm was 17 in 88', they couldn't find an older guy to play the role?
I hope George Lucas and the writers on Iron Eagle 2 get some royalties for writing credit.
Hmm wonder who was Cyclone first choice?
Interesting
ICEMAN is still the Better Pilot!!
Adm
Surprised training wasn't bulls-eying wombats
i'm still confused to why they couldn't use the f-35?
Wait, if he's in the Navy then he can't be a captain. Lt comm. Or full oak leaf commander. But not captain
Why not? A Navy Captain is the same as an Army Colonel.
Actually sir I finished 2nd 🤣🤣
the F-14 shouldn't have been revealed here. it should've been revealed when they were searching for an escape craft.
Lol, the F-35 is such a trash plane it would probably send an email to the enemy before take-off with flight trajectory, armament, and the home address of the pilot. Then it would crash.
hahaha :)
Why enemy has f14s
Maverick's a rule breaker which, while cool, is also insanely dangerous to other people's lives.
Kind of fair
Cogburn
Watched the ending. Give me a Break!!! In soviet held territory. F-14 Tomcats. They manage to get into Maverick should know that plane by heart ❤️. But it's in Russian? And he has trouble knowing what does what?!!! Then gets into a dog fight with 2 Top soviet aircraft and 1 does a Cobra maneuver and Rooster doesn't know that!? Fact! Top Gun pilots are the very best in the world 🌎. They fly against every aircraft known. The movie ok
The maneuver is called Kvochur Bell, not Cobra. Cobra is absolute different. In a Cobra maneuver the Jet always flys in one direction.
the most unrealistic part about that sequence is that neither Rooster nor Maverick could understand what the hand signals from the Sukhoi pilot meant
Nah man. It takes him a few seconds and that’s normal when you haven’t used something in 20+ years. That’s a long time.
@@a.w.1906 Well it on TH-cam. All 3 maneuvers. And there calling it the Cobra. My understanding is the Cobra maneuver is were the jet stands on its 12 o'clock almost a complete stop before heading another direction. This was first done in the Mig-29 during a airshow in France. The name you stated was the Russian Pilot that performed it. Eighter way. It's a hellof a move in a jet. Shalom
you clearly did not watch the movie. The controls are in English. No Mention of Russia was ever made in the movie. And no one in the US navy has flown an f14 in 26 years. And Top Gun pilots fly against US aircraft. The US Navy doesn't have stockpiles of enemy aircraft to train against pilots.
None of these people are believable for being part of any military. AWFUL acting. There are NO ORDERS once you're RETIRED... The flying scenes are fun in this movie, everything is is poor.
Some people find ways to not enjoy anything. And he wasn't retired. Civilians do not test secret military aircraft.
he wasnt retired, he was a test pilot for the navy at the start
I think you’re flat out wrong. I’m sorry you see it that way.

probably the most realistic part of the movie, as the gears of beuracracy grind slowly and usually always wait until the last minute, rarely if ever proactive.
😂😂
Something most people dont pay attention to this scene about is maverick fully knowing that someone would not be coming back from this and he had resigned himself to being that person who was not coming back. You could see it when he finished that sentence and paused for a moment before continuing. Its so subtle yet so impactful for this scene. Great acting
damn
Gotta love how one of the most common themes in fighter pilot stories is the intense rivalry. Cyclone thinks he's above Maverick because he's a by-the-book professionalism-minded officer who doesn't approve of his cocky unorthodox nature. And yet Maverick is obviously a superior pilot, and it only makes Cyclone angrier....
Cyclone graduated top of his Top Gun class, I'm not sure we can say Mavierick is "obviously" a superior pilot.

Is it just me, or is Cyclone a jerk for questioning Maverick about Goose’s death being an accident or not? I feel like Goose would’ve been the first to forgive Maverick
He played the part well…. I really wanted to kick his ass run away fast (He’d probably catch me, BUT I will get him first)z
No! He’s not thrilled but it is a issue that’s personal and could affect his thinking.
At first I thought Cyclone was just a stern CO, but when he brought up Goose I decided he was just a POS. He clearly has no appreciation for someone who lost a wingman / backseat. Probably took his desk promotion as soon as he could. Offering that kind of criticism without any understanding of what it would do to anyone, including himself and what it is still doing to Mav.
Not just you. Cyclone, a fan of Iceman, doesn't seem to realize that the other half of the accident was, in fact, the guy he looks up to.

2:48 - Bradshaw is 35 years old (June 27, 1984), went to University of Virginia as Political Science Major (Bachelor's - Summa Cum Laude), proficient in Spanish, DB2 O-3 Pay grade (He's probably making close to $100,000.00 with his service), Lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Started as an ensign (May 22, 2011), Lieutenant Junior Grade (May 22, 2013), Currently a Lieutenant (May 22, 2015). No promotions since... So he's been passed over twice (2017 and 2019)... third time means he would have to resign his commission.
Looks like he's a weapons specialist and currently has 4 decorations to his name.
The moment i see the F-14s in the cinema i knew he is gonna fly one of it

COMMANDER US NAVAL PACIFIC FLEET..
2 People on planet Earth outrank him,
The Chairman of the joint chief of staff,
And the President.
strictly speaking, SECDEF also outranks him (slotting in between CJCS and POTUS)
As much as it pains by the book people, people like Maverick are the people who wrote the book.
I find it funny how Warlock was just coming off of another military production the last ship and then he got the role for top gun maverick
Also Warlock will be in next Mission Impossible movie coming out in 2023.
Great actor
Maverick graduated Top Gun in Summer 86, went back as an instructor. Cyclone graduated in 88. chances are that Maverick trained Cyclone.
Except that as Maverick said in this clips, he only lasted a couple of months in his instructor position.
Maverick did say that he only lasted 3 months as a Top Gun Instructor.
That's what I always first think when I see this clip
Go point. Most tours of duty are 2 to 4 years. They switched Co every 18 months. So there was a chance you're right.
Maverick should've flown the Darkstar ahead of the strike team so he'll race with all the missiles at whatever mach speed is needed. Then the strike team can bomb the target with less danger.
That would have been a fun scene to watch
