      Maybe not keep trying the same thing. If it's not working you got to try different stuff. Different tools, different amounts of tension, different ways of attacking the problem. Look the lock up online and try to gain a better understand instead of doing the same thing over and over and hoping for a new result

    Thanks for the video! You briefly touched on key bitting and the difference it makes. Do you happen to have a video covering this in more detail, things like identifying a "7 cut" vs a "1 cut" and what the bitting means/can tell you about the pins?

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      xderiwx I could try to make a video down the road. Essentially you can decode your key with a key gauge. If you have good variation in the bitting it can make raking and picking more difficult. I slightly touched on the topic in video 77

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      raking comes down to a lot of luck and using light tension so any pin that sets too high will drop back down

    • @Ben7seven7
      @Ben7seven7 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on the lock bitting as well as other factors, not all locks can be raked open. Tho using the zipping method may be effective where the raking technique shown in this video won’t work.
      One thing you can do with taking is to angle the pick in different ways either tilting forward or backward and it just flat swiping in and out movements to help with over setting pins.

    I have a cheap disk lock that I am really struggling to rake, the bitting is nothing too drastic, it's a cheap lock but it takes some opening with the key to turn it - which means I think I need lots of tension - I'm going to apply little tension and see if I can rake it. I don't have a bogota, just a snake and a city rake. I'll give it another go.

    What if you used one of these in a fantasy video game lock as it would bypass the magic protection making it think your inserting the correct key? Fantasy locks don't have the security pins we usually do assuming most people will use magic to fight it if at all.

    I'm terrible at raking....maybe I'll have to go and give it some more effort...

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Try raking in a vise and use really light tension. It is super helpful when you just want to get a lock open. I bought 6 or so 6 pin Schlage mortise cylinders on eBay and raked them because I didn't want to SPP them. I could have shimmed them too as well.
      Raking is like anything else, it takes practice. Some people are really good at it and have even raked some American Locks open.

    Everytime that I try and rake the rake seems to get stuck on the pins how do I avoid this?

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some keyways are hard to fit the rake

    • @thinkinyblinko6666
      @thinkinyblinko6666 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're probably using just a bit too much tension, your rakes suck and need rounded off and polished, or the keyway is jagged as hell and maybe you need to use a .020 or .015 size rake instead. It really depends which lock you're talking about though. Knowing what the key looks like is helpful when determining which rake to use as well. Different rakes tend to work best with different techniques as well. Double and triple peaks are most effective as zipping rakes, city or saw rakes are best for well, sawing, worm rake for jiggling, snake rake for a combination of all techniques. If you understand how a lock works you will become a much better picker so do educate yourself as fully as you can on that front. And if you're going to be taking picking as a serious hobby or possible career, invest in a top quality set of picks the difference really is night and day. I personally prefer sparrows because they have the best handles, but multipick, Peterson, and southord are just as good.

    It is considered a low level attack because it doesn't work on high security locks or security pins to be more specific that's why it's a low level attack on locks also it can damage pins by wearing more then other methods it's an alright skill to have but single pin picking is more useful and allows you to feel what the pins are doing, most cheap locks will rake open in a short amount of time but you shouldn't just focus on one type of picking method instead use as many as possible to allow yourself to succeed at the task at hand

    I raked my first padlock yesterday. Realized it was a cheap padlock and only the first 2 pins had to be pressed. Then realized I only need to use a thin flat object to open the lock. Crazy tbh.
    Edit: practicing on a door at work (dont sorry I have permission) and I can't seem to unlock it. When I rake I feel them getting set. And when I take off the tension, I hear all the pins click. Idk

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Raking is a skill which takes time to develop. Also, with all locks some open easier than others.

      Could be oversetting or false set. Look up the type of lock and see if there's any security pins.

    It sucks most TH-cam is so quite on PC's. You have to crank up both your computer and regular speakers up to almost full max to hear it then everything else is BLARING loud. Each year YT updates make it quieter and quieter.

    I have such a problem with the videos they never really explain how light, or any hang ups you might run into. I have a little master lock #3 that i can SSP all day long but thr moment i try to rake it nothing happens, i cant even really move my rake in and out of the key way fast enough to do anything. And every video i have found has been like " oh you just stick the rake in and the lock falls apart" not actual toturials this one is about the same

    Funny story, my gf gave me this only case that she couldn't find a key for, she said it would be fun for me to try my lock picks out. After about 15 minutes trying to find the pins, I put too much pressure on it and...the lock shifted and unlocked the box... it wasnt locked it was just a button
