I think the death of Spider is what really made Henry think twice about his entire life.
Because if you don’t remember, that was HIS job when he was younger, so seeing just how easily that could’ve gone south for him in his youth, it made him realize that he can’t do this for much longer.

It's a little less common now than it was back when this movie was set, but a lot of Catholic families would give at least one of their daughters the name Mary (or a variant thereof) in honor of Jesus's mother, either as the first or the middle name. This movie is genius in the way it shows how much fun being a mobster is in the first half, then in the second half it shows how ugly and bloody the life can be. By seeing both the romance and disillusionment through Henry's eyes, we understand both why someone would let themselves fall into such a violent life, and why it is a horrible decision to.

  • @lizd2943
    @lizd2943 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

So the mob hierarchy is the boss, then the underboss, the consigliere (advisor) then down to the captains who each run a crew of soldiers. These are the official members, the "made men." Then there are the unofficial members or associates who work with them. Only associates who are of fully Sicilian or Italian heritage can get made. Paulie (real name Paul Vario) was a captain. Henry was half Irish and Jimmy was fully Irish (as far as he knew, he never knew who his father was). Tommy was fully Italian so he was the only one of the trio eligible to be made. Normally a captain wouldn't be as close to an associate like Henry as Paulie was but Henry's mother was from the same part of Sicily as Paulie's ancestors so he took a special interest in him.
Paulie knew exactly what his guys were doing in the restaurants raising hell and running up huge tabs. He sent them in there on purpose to get the owners to come to him so he could bleed them dry.

One of Scorsese's best movies. It is a classic. "Casino" is another Scorsese gangster movie that starred both Pesci and De Niro. You put those two together in a movie with Scorsese directing and it is going to be great. The scene where he takes his girlfriend (soon to be wife) to the club to see Henny Youngman perform and they enter through the kitchen is a very famous scene because it was done in one long take with the camera following them. Martin Scorsese is one of the few directors who could pull that off flawlessly.

It's interesting that you talk about how terrifying Paulie's stare is. The actor, Paul Sorvino (Mira's dad, by the way), said that he almost quit the movie right before they started shooting because he couldn't get a feel for the character. But one day he "got it" - the feel of what it would be like being a stone cold gangster who can casually order other people's murders - and then he looked at himself in the mirror...and he actually scared himself.

7:06 I'm pretty sure that Pauli was above Tommy. Above Pauli would've been the Boss and Underboss of family he was in, which I think was the Lucchese family. Pauli said there wasn't anything he could do about it, but I think he was just blowing the guy off since Pauli wasn't going to stop Tommy. That's why the guy had to get Pauli as a partner because then Pauli would've wanted to ensure Tommy stayed in line.

Asking somebody like Paulie for a favor only triggers his instinct for hustling the most he can out of the transaction. In this case, a restaurant business to pillage. Otherwise, Paulie's only pretending to not be able to control Tommy. Technically, Paulie or any other "made guy" could put a lid on an associate like Tommy if it's worth their trouble and Tommy would only be signing his own death warrant if he openly defied their orders or instructions.

Also that shot going into the Copa through the back is purely improvised by Marty. They arrived to set up to shoot the scene and were originally supposed to enter through the front entrance but the restaurant wouldn't allow them to. So Marty came up with the idea to do a one shot entering through the back and it's one of the most iconic shots of the film.

This is impossible. A lightning setup of that complexity cannot be improvised on the spot. The Steadicam they used was not at that time a regular piece of equipment, and the cameraman to operate it had to be specially trained (his name was Larry McConkey, who's only job on this movie was to operate the steadycam)
Besides, entering through the backdoor is something the original book states the couple used to do.

They were caught years later when Eppolito wrote a book about his life called Mafia Cop and the mother of Jimmy Hydell one of his victims picked it up, read it, and took it to the police. Also, Anthony Casso underboss of the Lucchese Family did a news interview from jail and named both of them as cops on their payroll.

Just to add some more background - since the 1930s or so, NYC has had 5 Mafia "families" - Gambino (that was Gotti's), Bonnano (the family involved in the events of Donnie Brasco), Columbo, Genovese and Lucchese. The events of Goodfellas takes place in the Lucchese family.

There was a known mafia hang out restaurant in South Philadelphia. Despite some are known to have died in the circumstances depicted, I met several that were named during that walk thru of the restaurant seen. I wont say who was the associate was that took us there, I was about 15 early 1980s.

A shine box is a wooden shoe shine box used back in the day when men wore dress shoes and wanted them shined. The shine box held shoe polish and polishing rags. The top of the box had a place the customer could place his foot while his shoe was being polished. A boy or even a grown man may offer to shine shoes wherever they could.
There wasn’t a lot of money to be made shining shoes. The shine box insult may have meant that Tommy was poor.

My parents are first gen Italian. This film reminds me of the part of the small town I grew up in. I have either a family member or know someone like every single character in this movie. My father just passed away in March. We used to quote this movie all the time. My dad thought it was hilarious. He had an accent so when he would quote it would make me laugh so hard! 😂

A fun FYI. In the beginning when they’re introducing all the different people, “No Nose”, “Two Times”, etc, in the restaurant, one of the people is Michael (I forget the movie last name). Anyway, the mobster that character is based on is named Michael Franzese. Michael Franzese, now out of that life, has his own TH-cam channel where he talks, in detail, about that life.

I like your questions about why everyone was named Paul or Peter or Marie...In the German side of my family (the rest is Jewish) there was about 100 years where ever boy was named Johann or something similar and every woman was named some version of Mary. The middle name was what distinguished them.
