It all depends. I tend to believe Michael franzese when he says that Henry was a lost soul. Even the movie kind of shows this. Also him being way more involved than he actually was. And also the movie doesn’t show how multiple times Henry tried to get out of the life as he realizes where it would eventually lead. I don’t think that prison scene is accurate though.
In addition Marty rarely gave his mother lines. She followed 'the story' but that's about it. The actors are all good enough at improv to carry & or guide things in the right direction. & The painting! It's her's. & She really is. Showing it off to the boys. & She ironed shirt collars.

Yes! It's been a minute since Mary has watched anything this heavy in a while. Wait till she finishes The Godfather 3. Lol. ❤ Also see Casino with Deniro and Pesci, Scarface with Al Pacino, Carlitos Way with Pacino.
Robert DeNiro insisted on using real money when he was tipping in order to make his Gangster persona seem more authentic. At the end of the day, Scorsese would triple count the set amount of money used in those scenes and wouldn't let anyone, cast or crew, leave until it was all accounted for. Just like a real Gangster. 😂
michael franzese who was mentioned in the movie(not the actual guy, he has youtube channel) said that henry hill was never so important that he got to go in through the kitchen and also michael franzese saved henry hill's life 3 times by not informing on him to the mobster when he was taking drugs or was in witness protection while in the slammer
Henry actually met Karen on a double date with Paulie's son, not Tommy. It is possible that Paulie arranged to let Henry in through the back of the Copa as a favor just that one time.
Mary.... The long cam Copa shot is LITERALLY taught in film classes. It's a Masterpiece. 7 takes!!! Henny Youngman the comedian would fumble his lines and they would have to reset and start again!!! thank you for watching this. it's timeless.
The movie definitely made Paulie out to look like a father figure, in reality Paulie was a ruthless psychopath, who had no empathy whatsoever for anyone or anything.
Textbook case of somebody raised by social media. "Go sis! Shoot him in the head!" Yeah, committing murder over infidelity would be super cool and respectable. /s
"She's the one apologizing?" Well, yes. He did just wake up to assault with a deadly weapon. He is abusive. Good point. But instead of getting out of there while he was sleeping she put a gun in his face. You may sympathize with her, as you should, but they were mutually abusive.
If you liked this one. I would recommend Casino with Deniro and Pesci or The Departed with Leo Dicaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson. Both movies were directed by Martin Scorsese
Check out Scorsese's "Casino" (another true story) which came out in 1995 and is sort of a companion piece to this. The cinematic style is similar. De Niro and Pesci also star.
Mary I have a suggestion for you. Because this movie is loosely based on actual events. Try to watch stories on Henry Hill, Paul Vario (Paul Cicero), and Tommy DeSimone (Tommy DeVito) on their stories.
The real Spider was buried in the basement of that building along with some other people. When the police finally raided it, Jimmy just got done cementing the basement cause he just moved the bodies the night before. The real Tommy was a giant and it wasn't just Billy Bats that got him wacked, there was another guy I believe he either was a Made Guy or related to one. Also it wasn't just Tommy they killed, they went after one of his brothers. They still haven't found Billy Bats.
They also murdered Tommy's girlfriend, in addition to his brother. Members of the Gambino family often joked that they should go after Tommy's other, surviving brother, to "finish the DeSimone trifecta." Tommy's body has also never been found.
"As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster..." RIP to Ray Liotta. His narration brings so much to Goodfellas, and the scene where he slides out of the court box breaking the 4th wall is so smooth. You would enjoy Ray in Heartbreakers, with Sigourney Weaver, and Operation Dumbo Drop, with Danny Glover
yess THATs a film Ive never seen anyone review, Its a classic con. comedy anyone would enjoy. I just SAW Cassie do PRIMAL FEAR with Edward Norton and R Gere and she was blown away at the twist, lol
The book that this film was based on was called Wiseguy. That originally was going to be the name of the movie, however, at the time there was a TV show on the air called Wiseguy and to make sure there was not any confusion, they decided to make the name change to Goodfellas
A movie you should watch is, "my blue heaven" it's technically a comedy but it's based on gangsters that are in the witness protection program. You'll see things that are associated with the crime family based in this movie.
It wasn't really a shoe shine thing. In real life, it was about Bats getting out of jail and wanting his territories that Tommy and Jimmy had taken over. Gambling, loansharking, etc. Goodfellars was a true story, but the movie characters were not as bad as the real-life people. Especially Tommy believe it or not. It's my favorite movie.
You can follow with Casino, Wolf of Wall Street, Cape Fear, The King of Comedy, Taxi Driver, Shutter Island, Gangs of New York, The Aviator and The Departed.
One of the all time great movies. Bronx Tale is prob my all time gangster movie along with the Godfather 1 & 2. I grew up in Howard Beach so it was “mob” influenced but it was far from this era. Now its all but barely there. This was my dads era.
Trivia: When "Paulie" unexpectedly slaps "Henry" in the face, that scene was improved and Paul Sorvino totally caught Ray Liotta off guard. That's why Ray Liotta looks so shocked, like "WTF"?!?! Classic Scorsese secret directorial!
Lol i like the Title. Consider checking out Internal Affairs, The Departed (which is a remake of the original Internal Affairs), Gangs of New York, LA Confidential and The Untouchables if you wanna to watch more Mafia style movies :)
Henry outlived everyone he knew in that group. To the point that the ones who took over rescinded the bounty on Henry’s head allowing him to be out in public without looking over his shoulder and being able to do many interviews for many documentaries about what happened or on other gangs
his wife: *puts gun to his head* Mary: wow i respect her if she kills him henry: *slaps her and takes the gun away from his head* Mary: woow is he serious?! hes abusive! my guy just trying to defend himself by not dying is abusive, but the one who put a gun to his head is good and respected. typical women, they want the authority of a man, but accountability of a child.☕☕☕
Not to mention she clearly saw what kind of guy he is, but yet still stayed with him and got married. Lets skip over the fact as well she has two kids with her while yelling obscenities and being a crazy lady at his mistresses apartment building. Also a side note the real life wife was sleeping around behind his back with Paulie, she is no saint ,she knew everything they did. In typical fashion though she is given a pass and is somehow the victim.
If you liked this Scorsese film you should watch what is generally considered to be his best film Taxi Driver (1976). De Niro is in this film too. De Niro plays a lonely and mentally unstable taxi driver in 1970’s New York City named Travis Bickle. This film is a true masterpiece.
A "Wop" is a slur against Italians. While the epilogue says that Jimmy Conway would be eligible for parole in 2004, James Burke (who the character was based off on) died of cancer in prison in 1996. Henry Hill died in 2012.
GoodFellas is the second in a trilogy of films Martin Scorsese made about the Mafia. The other two being Mean Streets and Casino. There is an epilogue in the form of The Irishman aka I Heard You Paint Houses.
This stuff is so far from Mary's world I knew it would be classic to watch. Lol. Great reaction. With Mafia movies they're ALL toxic, cheating on their wives and on drugs. That's the trope. Ironic thing is Billy Blats and the kid both killed by Tommy were pretty brutal themselves in The Sopranos series. Karen was the therapist and played so wholesome. Lmao
From Wikipedia; Following the testimony of Henry Hill, Burke was convicted in 1982, of conspiracy charges related to his involvement in the 1978-79 Boston College basketball point-shaving scandal, and sentenced to 12 years in prison. While in prison, he was convicted of murder and sentenced to another 20 years. He died of cancer at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, eight years before he would have been eligible for parole. Burke inspired the character Jimmy "The Gent" Conway, one of the main characters of the 1990 film Goodfellas, played by Robert De Niro.
I've read the book Wiseguy, quite a lot is left out of the film but Henry went through everything to convert to Judaism so he could marry Karen. Also, you asked how their system was set up, there were kind of minor Italian mafias in New York in the 19th and early 20th Centuries but when Prohibition started those mafias became quite wealthy and these criminals were always looking for new rackets, it's what they did all day!
He literally stated he lied to her and her family about converting. Besides, it's a lot of unnecessary work to officially convert. I wouldn't suggest it.
There was a lot more to Tommy's death than what was shown here. And that shot of Henry doing the line and raising his head....all of us who have used cocaine understand that feeling.
The Henry Hill commentary track with the agent who caught him who also plays himself when they go to witness protection in the movie is fantastic. Definitely worth watching it again for that.
21:18 That's Martin Scorsese's real life mom, she improvised her entire part in this movie, she just treated them all like her sons friends stopping by like she normally would have.
You are always so quotable. It's so much fun to re-visit your commentary over and over. My favorite lines in this one are "so forward with the banging" and "again with the breaking of the balls." Magnificent!! Thank you.
James Conway died in prison in 1996, six years after the film was released. It's funny that the movie doesn't portray Henry Hill's craziest personal story. Right before getting arrested and joining the witness protection program, he ran off to Vegas with another woman and got married despite still being married to Karen. It's crazy that still went into witness protection together and didn't get officially divorced until the early 00s.
Dude, you are the first reactor I've seen make the connection of Henry saying they only go to jail if they want to with him being sent to prison later. Gold star for you ☆

Yes! It's been a minute since Mary has watched anything this heavy in a while. Wait till she finishes The Godfather 3. Lol. ❤ Also see Casino with Deniro and Pesci, Scarface with Al Pacino, Carlitos Way with Pacino.
I would seriously recommend "The Departed" by Scorsese. It's a classic. Plus - Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg
I think Karen was apologizing for pointing and holding a gun at Henry's face.
Her finger was on the trigger too. One lil squeeze and it could have been nighttime forever for Henry.
michael franzese who was mentioned in the movie(not the actual guy, he has youtube channel) said that henry hill was never so important that he got to go in through the kitchen and also michael franzese saved henry hill's life 3 times by not informing on him to the mobster when he was taking drugs or was in witness protection while in the slammer
Tommy and Leo Getz are like night and day. 😂 Leo is a warm fuzzy goofball.
Really well done - poised, well-spoken, informative, didn’t chat your brains out. I enjoyed it, thank you…
The movie definitely made Paulie out to look like a father figure, in reality Paulie was a ruthless psychopath, who had no empathy whatsoever for anyone or anything.
Most of them were lol
@@darkerthanblack4430 True that, Tommy and Jimmy were also pretty softened up compared to their real life counterparts.
R.I.P. Ray Liotta, a greatly talented actor.
Mary is so adorably naïve, like “why are these sociopaths so rude?” Lol ❤
😄exactly
It's so enchanting
Textbook case of somebody raised by social media. "Go sis! Shoot him in the head!" Yeah, committing murder over infidelity would be super cool and respectable. /s
"She's the one apologizing?" Well, yes. He did just wake up to assault with a deadly weapon. He is abusive. Good point. But instead of getting out of there while he was sleeping she put a gun in his face. You may sympathize with her, as you should, but they were mutually abusive.
Martin Scorsese is legendary in the film world for his one shot takes.
This and the one take in Atonement are my favorite
If you liked this one. I would recommend Casino with Deniro and Pesci or The Departed with Leo Dicaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson. Both movies were directed by Martin Scorsese
Yes!!! The Departed is even better than Goodfellas in my opinion.
Casino not nearly this good, but still enjoyable.
Check out Scorsese's "Casino" (another true story) which came out in 1995 and is sort of a companion piece to this. The cinematic style is similar. De Niro and Pesci also star.
Mary
I have a suggestion for you. Because this movie is loosely based on actual events. Try to watch stories on Henry Hill, Paul Vario (Paul Cicero), and Tommy DeSimone (Tommy DeVito) on their stories.
Mary
Why Joe Pesci is so good playing gangsters? Joe grew up in same area where gangsters hanout during the 50's.
Tommy's mother is actually Martin's mom
The Departed, Aviator, Gangs of New York, After Hours.
Martin Scorcese knows how to tell a story.
Thanks for reacting to this.
Aviator needs some reactions. Leo gives a great performance in that one.
Raging Bull is amazing too.
@@redwing1214 Yes! Easily Scorsese's top 3
Taxi driver unmatched
"As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster..."
RIP to Ray Liotta.
The agent at the end who puts Henry into protective custody, is Ed McDonald, who plays himself in the film.
Fun fact: The sweet little old lady who played Tommy's mom is actually Mama Scorsese, mother of the director, Martin Scorsese.
The book that this film was based on was called Wiseguy. That originally was going to be the name of the movie, however, at the time there was a TV show on the air called Wiseguy and to make sure there was not any confusion, they decided to make the name change to Goodfellas
8:02 - 8:25 In Animaniacs, that was a running gag for the Goodfeather segments between two pigeons; Squit and Pesto, which always ends in a scuffle.
I appreciate your feminist take on the way Women were treated so poorly by the supposed Mafia. Thanks Mary.
A movie you should watch is, "my blue heaven" it's technically a comedy but it's based on gangsters that are in the witness protection program. You'll see things that are associated with the crime family based in this movie.
“Casino” is a must-see!!!
Fun fact: “Spider” also “shot himself in the foot” figuratively after Tommy did it literally 😂
This is an epic gangster film, Pesci as Tommy was terrifying and Conway not that far off. Oh and Jimmy Two Times is a total legend a total legend.
😂😂
You got that right, got that right.
"What's a wop?" 😬
Eh, just be careful who ya say it around.
“You’ve caused a commotion”. I’ve never laughed so hard in my life when you said that
Am I in trouble? I don’t know how. All I know how to do is reply
Wow. Martin Scorsese movie. Taxi Driver lead actor Robert DeNiro from the 70's. A classic. And I am still loving that hair color..
Scorsese is a masterful filmmaker. I would suggest Taxi Driver and Bringing Out the Dead.
Henry outlived everyone he knew in that group. To the point that the ones who took over rescinded the bounty on Henry’s head allowing him to be out in public without looking over his shoulder and being able to do many interviews for many documentaries about what happened or on other gangs
Ok yes... Henry was a terrible husband, but he had every right to get upset after she literally pointed a gun to his freaking face lol
his wife: *puts gun to his head*
Mary: wow i respect her if she kills him
henry: *slaps her and takes the gun away from his head*
Mary: woow is he serious?! hes abusive!
my guy just trying to defend himself by not dying is abusive, but the one who put a gun to his head is good and respected.
typical women, they want the authority of a man, but accountability of a child.☕☕☕
@@vortexlight8387it’s literally not that serious, my guy
@@jmendozaedd he just pointing it out are you making a big deal out of it
@@vortexlight8387 Toxic Femininity, indeed.
Great movie!! And yes, ball breaking is more if an art form vs an exact science :) You gotta know where the boundries are 😅
A "Wop" is a slur against Italians.
While the epilogue says that Jimmy Conway would be eligible for parole in 2004, James Burke (who the character was based off on) died of cancer in prison in 1996. Henry Hill died in 2012.
Joe Pesci won Best supporting actor in this film.
21:09 Nonna here reminds me of me when my daughters visit. Lots of hugs, then I immediately cook something for them. 😄
When a little visit turns into a whole meal, that’s family.
GoodFellas is the second in a trilogy of films Martin Scorsese made about the Mafia. The other two being Mean Streets and Casino. There is an epilogue in the form of The Irishman aka I Heard You Paint Houses.
Raging Bull has some mafia element in it as well as being the first one with Joe Pesci and Frank Vincent.
Casino 🎰 ranks up there too. Based on a true story, you will like just as much...
Lmao
Yea and speaking of cheating, let's not even get started on Tony Soprano.
I was just watching the Tony V Carmela fight over that. Ha@@anironiccoolness
From Wikipedia;
Following the testimony of Henry Hill, Burke was convicted in 1982, of conspiracy charges related to his involvement in the 1978-79 Boston College basketball point-shaving scandal, and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
" he's abusive" the girl had a gun to his face 😂😂😂
One of the greatest movies of all time!
Tommy is just a nice guy who takes good care of his elderly mother. I hope he lived a long time!😅😊
Never get tired of watching this film masterpiece.
There was a lot more to Tommy's death than what was shown here. And that shot of Henry doing the line and raising his head....all of us who have used cocaine understand that feeling.
CHALLENGE: Take a shot every time she says "gaslighting."
Now it's time for Casino, basically this movie's sister film.
We learned a lesson from Mary and I quote "no breaking of the balls when people are around". 😅
I love Goodfellas. I consider it one of the best movies of all time for me. Top five favorite for me!
"I didn't want to get blood on your floor" Tommy is crazy
_Was,_ and it’s why he became a _was_ at 28.
The only thing Marty told her was to show them the painting.
Such a great movie!!
My favourite movie, brilliant acting from everyone. and a really good story
Probably the best movie ever made. Great book that it is based on too.
Gotta watch Casino next 👌🏼
Dude, you are the first reactor I've seen make the connection of Henry saying they only go to jail if they want to with him being sent to prison later. Gold star for you ☆
This is such a great film!
Yeah I was obsessed with this last Year When I First Watch it And it's a Great Film
