A crazy fact about this movie is that the two guys taking out all the guys at the end are actual mafia killers who were in witness protection who carried out some of those hits in real life. They were advisors on the film working with Scorsese and basically said “Hey, we did some of these hits. We’ll do them for ya in the movie.”

Martin Scorsese said he never writes lines for his Mother, in any of his movies (including Goodfellas) everything she says, is just mom being mom. The only 'script' the other actors have is a bare outline. 'This is what it's about' & the rest is just having a conversation with mom & responding to what she says.

Except for a few embellishments you have to expect from Hollywood this is strongly based on true events. You can look up the people portrayed and see the actual documented stories of each one. De Niro's character is based on Frank Rosenthal and Pesci's is based on Anthony "Tony the Ant" Spilotro.
De Niro is one of the best mob movie actors ever but you need to see him in "Analyze This" [1999]. Same mob guy but De Niro in a full on comedy has to be seen to be believed.

    • @ashotonehlobyjacksilverste4416
      @ashotonehlobyjacksilverste4416 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Tony Spilotro is a Chicago guy, and I went to high school with his nieces in the suburbs. They were daughters of a third Spilotro brother who I think was a dentist - obviously not in the movie. Our senior year, we had a class with a lot of leeway to do a Chicago history project, and my friend and I chose one on the Chicago Outfit. The lone stipulation was that we could not have any mention of Spilotro, as one of the twins was in the class.

I’m not the biggest gangster movie fan but this was well done. And Nicky’s demise was extra shocking considering he was narrating up until that point.
    Gangster movies I recommend:
    The Godfather Trilogy
    Scarface (1983)
    Miller’s Crossing (1990)
    The Untouchables (1987)
    Billy Bathgate (1991)
    Gangs Of New York (2002)
If you watch The Godfather Trilogy you might need to take notes- there’s so many names to keep track of-a lot of moving parts but it’s well-written and has amazing performances and cinematography. But they’ll casually say something you need to remember a lot. 😂🤣 lol

There are a few Irish crime films worth watching. A) The Departed B) State of Grace C) White Heat. The best black gangsta movies are A) Menace to Society, which is basically Goodfellas with black people and B) New Jack City. The best Jewish gangster movies? A) Once Upon A Time In America and B) Bound.. Okay, that's enough. Why am I still pimping ethnic gangster movies? There's too many to recommend. Carry on, Asia and BJ. I understand Franks dilemma, his loyalty to Nicky literally put everyone in danger, including himself. (Pleading ignorance wasn’t going to save his life, if it came down to it)- so I think what happened at the end was, he had to decide who he was loyal to, and PROVE his loyalty. Frankie decided he wanted to live, rather than go down in flames out of his loyalty to Nicky.

If you liked Robert DeNiro & Joe Pesci in this movie... Then you'll probably wanna watch RAGING BULL. It's not a gangster movie per se, but it does have a little of that element in the movie. It's based on a TRUE STORY and is DEFINITELY considered a "Classic". Hope you enjoy it. 👍💖😀

Fun fact; Martin scorcese wanted to make casino really realistic even if he didnt sho some parts of rothsteins life. Even the deaths were as they supposed to happen in real life except one, the one of Niky's.That is because Martin wanted to make a small parallel between casino and goodfellas; In casino Niky is clubbed to death by a bat from his right hand man who is played by frank vincent. This is because in goodfellas Tommy[joe pesci] kill Billy BATS[frank vincent]. Pretty cool huh?

I was in a casino in Biloxi, MS in the 1990s and watched a guy playing blackjack with chips I didn't recognize. I asked a waitress and she told me that they were $10,000 chips and he had stacks on every spot on the table. She told me that he comes in once a month and then buys in for $1,000,000 and leaves with, sometimes more than $100,000,000.00. Then she leaned over and whispered, "He's laundering money for the mafia." I looked at her funny and she said, "He's taking bad money and cashing it out, paying taxes on it, so it's legitimate money."

Alot people couldnt believe Joe Pesci's character could be that menacing when hes only 5"4. An everybody towering over him.
But in fact the guys he's playing Tony Spilotro was only 5"2 an he was extremely menacing. An a force to be reckoned with.
Pesci did a superb job playing him.

Love this movie! So much talent! Casino is based on a real mobster’s life: Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal & his wife, Geri McGee Rosenthal. Geri did die of a drug overdose & Lefty died of a heart attack at an old age. He had been an FBI informant. 😂 Fascinating stuff but a brutal world to be part of. Thanks for your reaction & insights!

48:20...the brutality of this scene is so disturbing and surreal. U can feel Nicky's anger, feeling betrayed, then sadness, regret, as he comes to realize this is it. As bad as someone is, I don't want anyone to go out like that. And also just another reason I don't want anything to do with this scene, no way man. Just like dude said in Goodfellas, they come at u when ur at ur lowest, smiling, your friend, ur pal.

This film is based on a true story. The mob portrayed in the film was actually the Chicago Outfit, but you only hear Ace and Nicky say "back home." The casino was the Stardust Casino in Las Vegas, which has since been torn down. They changed the name in the movie to the Tangiers. Nicky Santoro in real life was Tony "The Ant" Spilotro, and Ace Rothestein was actually Lefty Rosenthal in real life.

the real Nicky (Anthony Spilotro) and his brother actually got a worse death than in the movie. They were lured into a basement in the city and punched and kicked to death, which would've been more brutal and prolonged than with bats. Nicky/Anthony's friend Frank wasn't involved either, since he was already caught and making a deal with the feds (he makes an appearance as one of the hitmen in the movie)

ASIA & BJ: I had an amusing real-life experience with the casino & gangsters this movie was based on. Less amusing, I had a friend who was a blackjack dealer who was murdered when she worked at that casino back then. I wonder to this day, more than 40 years later, if it was because she was stealing from them, or what?

Add Al Pacino and you get The Irishman, another Martin Scorsese film. Pesci shows what his Casino character might have turned out to be had lived longer. Pacino is semi-sorta-legit and DeNiro is, well, Irish.

Fun fact: Scorsese included the vice scene as something that the censors would remove, so that he could fight them on it and then "give in." That way, he wouldn't have them going after the stuff he really wanted to keep. But they didn't fight him on it so it stayed in.
