@@kenderbabeliano1086 Yeah there were some good moments, but most of the episodes were ok at best, meh at worst. Daima on the other hand looks promising and yes I've only seen the first two episodes, but I'm really hoping there won't be many badly animated episodes.
@@kenderbabeliano1086 like the art style or lack of frames (or the random weird parts like tracksuit gohan legs) because supers art style is something I think is way better than z and made even better with movies like broly
Every single one of you did an amazing job! Each reanimation is awesome! Well done! Someone could've told me these remakes were done by Toei, and I would've believed them, because they're that good! Even the music and voice lines in the background makes it feel like I'm watching an actual remake of DBZ!
I absolutely love your reimagining art videos ... they are epic! The Super to Z panels were the new stuff with a touch or nostalgia and this is like an HD remaster ... they're just awesome.
Well super maybe had weeks or a month per episode. Daima probably months per episode. Damn near every frame could be a picture frame. Thats how you know they spent way too much time on it.
I wouldn't say that the animation was subpar, at least in the second half. The art style is a different thing entirely. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't really that good either.
It's literally pedophile programming I don't think true dragon ball z fans can watch it and objectively not see that the woke mafia is at it again... Panzy and glory hole??? They turn them into kids in demon realm.... Yeah I don't know how much more subliminally woke u can go...
I'm only a minute 30 seconds into this video, but I had to comment that I think the reason this is so universally beloved by fans is that the people behind Daima took the lessons and feedback learned from Super and DBS: Broly. DBS: Broly, to me, was the perfect modern way to capture the old Dragonball look. It really felt like they were trying to recreate the look and feel of the original anime using modern techniques instead of using modern techniques to make an anime based on Dragonball (which is what Super felt like to me). I think most people I know were excited to see DBS: Broly's hand animated moments because of how good they looked, so this is just a further reflection of that. Dragonball as an anime was plagued with a lot of issues that I think could completely and totally be fixed in modern times. There were rushed episodes, strict schedules to follow, multiple studios, poor pacing at times when they started to catch up to the manga too quickly, and just all of that. I think a modern remake of Dragonball following 1:1 with the source manga material with a huge budget (because they can frankly get away with it at this point- Dragonball as a series is HUGE) and time to cook up episode after episode that look as good as something like DBS: Broly or the redone shots from Daima would just absolutely slay. I see a lot of people saying, "We don't need a remake because the original is right here" and I just don't agree. Anime was handled differently back then- especially with a series that wasn't yet as popular as it had eventually become. We have the hindsight now of knowing the FULL story. We don't need to have the animators turn five minutes of a fight on Namek into multiple 30 minute episodes anymore because we don't need to wait for Toriyama to draw more chapters. Dragonball is a complete work now. I'd say go for it.
@@richtersundeen6105 They'll be making dragon ball either way, it's only really a question of quality at this point. It's not a matter of commitment so much as it is resource allocation, which I'm sure is what you meant, I just like to be senantic. The real point, that I think most would agree with, is that I'd much prefer they dedicate some staff to a true remake as opposed to a lot of their other projects. It would likely make more money, too. If I'm being honest, a lot of the other stuff they've been churning out barely qualifies as dragon ball quality wise. I'd definitely be up for more higher quality remakes. Much better in my opinion than rushed or shoddy projects trying to capitalize on a trend or craze, as some of their recent stuff has been. Look at how successful kai was, even with it's issues. Dragon ball has always been about top tier action anyway, giving it a good old re-do would be amazing for everyone.
Wait until Mark Finds out there IS an animation feature in procreate... 💀 (Fun Fact: Yoh Yoshinari of Studio Trigger animated several shots of Dungeon Meshi on an ipad mini with default procreate)
Yeah I was looking for this comment, it’s kind of amazing that he was able to just eyeball it, but it’s funny because he really didn’t have to since procreate has the feature 😂
Man, I think this was my favorite of these drawing videos. While the stills are cool, watching them be animated just elevates each one to an entirely new level.
The answer is: It depends. It’s easy to look at some hype as fuck 20 sec animation and go “I want that” but it becomes a different story altogether when we’re talking about a full 20 min ep. Could they maintain that quality? Especially for something as long as DBZ? As Mark said, DBZ is iconic for a reason, and while I think a remake could provide some nice updates to a 30+ year anime, I do think it’s possible that you lose what made that anime special with more modern animation.
What made it special ?? you mean screaming for entire episodes , long drawn out fights , awkward filler scenes that serves no purpose .. dbz is outdated just accept the truth plus db without the bad pacing and fillers is not long at all the manga volumes = 42 = bnha length
@@BbPp-z2r My recurring nightmare is a DBZ remake looking like DB Super, with Yamamuro as the character designer, it would practically look horrible in every episode, basically like Dragon Ball Super.
@@nin5797good thing yamamuro isn't the character designer anymore and only has small animation parts that actually look decent when he's not extremely rushed like on super lol
Great works! Much better body and face proportions on the remake. The next step is camera panning and zooming, like the Majin Bejita clip when he is about to strike on this video.
that opening with the manga panels superimposed over the animation was crazy, id love to see a video of the super hero opening & the daima flashbacks edited that way
If a remake happens, they should start at the original DB, and not replace all the non-humans (tiger men, dog men, big dinos, etc.) with humans. It's what made the original fun. Just take the manga and work with that. A Daima-style full remake of the entire series would be amazing to me.
Animator here! It’s cool seeing artists taking a stab at animating for the first time! I’d be down for more reanimated scenes, (if you have the will power) The animations turned out very well! Great job guys! P.s. Procreate does have a flip book setting that using onion skins. I use it for some animations
2:45 WHAT WAS THAT MUSIC JESUS I GOT GOOSEBUMPS (note i havent watched daima yet, in case it was in fact the show's intro theme and to anybody else, would seem like a dumb question)
I don't have anything useful to say other than I love your content. Absolutely adore the way you analyse and your animation is awesome. Keep doing what you're doing. This is one of my favourite channels.
The main thing that worries me about the idea of a remake is the fact that we wouldn’t have the good old Shunsuke Kikuchi score because of how badly preserved it is. With so many tracks being released in Mono or simply unreleased. Which resulted in what happened with Kai. I also saw some people being worried about censorship but if it’s not heavy, I wouldn’t mind that (just like I don’t mind it all that much in Kai). However, I would lie if I said that I wouldn’t love to see OG DB and DBZ (that are both just Dragon Ball in the manga) remade with this art style and this level of animation. And two things that I would love even more about that is that more people would see OG DB and it would also be redubbed in other languages with a far more faithful script than the old versions. As OG DB doesn’t have any dub that’s good all the way through among the ones I know.
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 Smart and educated in film. Or they just have a very basic sense of what sounds good. Either way they know the Japanese score and the atrocious voiceovers are what held DBZ back from being a worldwide phenomenon. Luckily Funimation came along and corrected all their amateurish decisions and made something high quality.
@@ChangedMyNameFinally69 Indeed. Another one of those people thinking that DBZ wouldn’t be successful without Faulconer, lol. Yeah. It’s not like DBZ was super popular in other countries before, with its original Japanese score having being kept and being loved by a huge part of the world. And let’s not forget that Faulconer barely composed anything in his score and that you can’t even watch Z from beginning to end with his employees’ score (to which he didn’t give any credits), lol.
Man, I'd be so down for a remake. I wouldn't even want them to take a purist angle on it, change stuff. Re-choreograph the fight scenes. Give us more! Rewatching DBZ lately I realised how stark the difference is in animation quality, and I don't just mean the drawings. Goku vs Cell for example, starts out fairly mediocre, but somewhere just before Cell blows up the Arena it gets turned up to 11. The choreography is fantastic, the drawings are amazing and the action is simply peak Dragonball. By far the best fight scene in the series IMO. Even better than the new Broly movie!
Mark how DARE you not even call yourselves real animators after seeing this beautiful work of art. Let me tell you something as a former animation student.. .what you did is not just hardwork but also knowledge and it shows the passion and dedication spent... on recreating these images.. so don't you EVER dare not call yourself a real animator again. .after this.. . cuz not many people could do what you guys did.. ok? Got it.. good. Keep up with the content man.. just fantastic job all of you involved are true artists and animators as a whole!.
There's another scene where Goku vs Vegeta when Goku uses Kaioken that i always believed was better in manga. It's where Vegeta tracks Goku and shoots a ki blast, but Goku gains distance and drop kicks him. Although iconic, i feel if done faithfully, it'd be done really well. That, and Goku's kaioken x20 to Frieza. I believe it was Goku missing punches as opposed to him landing hits to send Frieza flying to eventually blasting the x20 Kame Hama Ha should be angled appropriately to show the anime was off.
For your first animation is a long time, you did really well. Idk what on earth possessed you to animate the way you did and this is coming from somebody who used to animate on his phone with his fingers XD. You definitely have the required "animator's insanity" brain cell. The super saiyan scene was limited but man the energy was hype, even got a nice impact frame. As somebody who animates daily, I cannot agree with you more about how ridiculously hard it can feel to draw loose clothing moving sporadically in the wind. It's easy to not notice when you only get the full result, but in the process it never feels right and sometimes that makes it better, which is mind-numbing to rationalize. XD The pan up shot for Vegeta was a nice change, I like the original but this makes his nervousness a bit more obvious in this version so I think it sets the tone a bit better and makes good use of perspective. With the 18 shot, I'm so glad you pointed out how different the approach has to be for action sequences compared to still shots. The manga panel is good and works well for the medium, but a lot more needs to go into animation to make it hit that sweet spot. The 18 shot was nice and the hair was nicely animated, but considering the context of the scene, it probably wouldn't even last a second to show the speed before going right to the next panel. Manga doesn't have to worry as much about timing of the movements of a fight compared to the content since it's a still image, but it can easily make or break the believability and impact of animation if mishandled. The Gohan shot I think showed the biggest difference between animation and manga as a medium out of any of these. The manga is a classic. It's a fire shot, there's no debate there and the animation based on the panel was also great. rather than stiff, it felt simple and if that was on my screen when watching the show, I'd be out of my chair for sure XD. But while it is great, anime is simply different. And as you pointed out, the ability to choose what works and elevate that beyond what the paper can hold is why so many people love it and want to see it. The tensing of the muscles, the twitches of the hair prior, the smoke clearing, the shaking of the ground, the way everyone else at the time could barely move, and finally the different angles from which the transformation could be shown were what made that scene feel iconic, alive even. The key is in all the little details. Just like with animating one person (guides, lineart, color, shading, lighting, filters, secondary effects), we get direction + animation + sound effects + music + VA performances + editing/compositing, etc. The animation process is layers upon layers of little things working together to bring art to life. And that is both insanely difficult, and insanely rewarding. A really interesting thing is, DBZ Kakarot also animated their 3D characters in certain scenes that were more faithful to the manga compared to the anime. Your "I am a Super Saiyan" and Gohan SSJ2 transformation actually reminded me of them specifically. They also had to take some liberties but still acted very faithful in both scenes. (totally not salty about the lack of final flash, but I digress, they gave us a lot of other good stuff) TLDR: y'all did really good work on this. That must've taken a while and I hope y'all had the best sleep when that was over. An interesting experiment would be trying to animate a scene/exchange based on the manga that you yourself would change to fit into animation format, if able. Doesn't even have to be dragonball, could just be anything you'd want animated personally. (I say this right after saying much of a pain animation is XD)
btw Mark , this didnt just happen with Dragon ball . It happened with the recent new Kinnikuman , the first episode of the new anime was a recap of the entire first show , and the remade/reimagined shots of the classic blew our fucking minds. That community is also calling for a full remake of the classic show in that style.
Dragon Ball Kai just isn't as good as the original, & basically everything it is is from the Original run. Just edited to be more manga accurate. A little more boring if you ask me 😂 I'd welcome a full send remake
As a Story Artist, it's always nice to see when this stuff happens. Proper visual storytelling can be so nuanced and difficult, especially when you get the differences between mediums and directorial vision. As always, thank you for showcasing stuff like this and sharing what that experience is like to actually try and do it! :)
Quick note. I actually animate in Procreate on my iPad as well, same situation as you. I check my animation using the 'animation assist' feature. It's not perfect but it does the job. I also have Dreams but as you've noted - it's ass. This why I ended up animating in Procreate. Basically doing it all frame by frame with a max of 60 layers per document. If what I'm animating takes more than 60 layers then it's off to a new document to keep animating 😅
I'm crying right now, I felt exactly how Mark lays this out, never imagined EVERYONE felt the same. That Majin Vegeta 5 seconds....are the greatest 5 seconds of my life, besides last night.
If we ever get a complete remake, it has to start from the Pilaf Arc to the Majin Buu Arc. The early WTs reanimated in modern days would be amazing. Also that "I AM THE SUPER SAIYAN" animation was GAS.
I'm not excited about the idea of a remake because it would be a straight 1:1 adaptation of the manga. So all the filler scenes we love would be gone, and the side characters would be even more useless than they already are (yes, they do even less in the manga than in the anime). All the improvements the anime made would be gone, like how Goku gets the divine water, the Piccolo Arc in general, the Gohan survival episodes, all the moments where side characters do something cool or help out in fights, the peaceful moments where the characters just hang out - None of that's in the manga. And knowing Toei nowadays, they’d probably cut out all the blood too.
Same. Some people dislike the filler, but honestly, the filler is why Piccolo’s death hit so hard in the first place. We actually had time to get to know his and Gohan’s relationship
I wouldnt mind some of the filler being gone. I legit thought I hated the goku vs the red ribbon arc because it took forever in the anime but in the manga it was fun as fuck
Don't we know that toriyama had some involvement or at least consultation on some of the filler moments? At the very least we know that he approved and retroactively applied some of the filler to his own manga later
Procreate *absolutely* having an animation feature (and one I like more than Procreate Dreams at that lmao) absolutely killed me. Man, Mark, you made your life so much harder, but the result was still incredible!
the regular version of procreate does have animation though, it has the flipbook which allows you to test it and flip between animations exactly lie you wanted to do.
I cry for you! Please get Krita!!! 😭 But you all did amazing work! Animation takes forever and you all did splended! Like, it's all coloured, and shaded, with sound and music??? Wonderful!
A complete DB remake in Daima Style sounds fucking amazing. Your animations were also insanely good. With your negativity I really expected worse. It all felt very natural and fitting.

Daima looks incredible that’s why fans loved it. After watching super and seeing sub par animation it’s a breath of fresh air.
Well super maybe had weeks or a month per episode. Daima probably months per episode. Damn near every frame could be a picture frame. Thats how you know they spent way too much time on it.

@@canto-borgI completely agree it looks straight out of the anime
Dude its litturally a master piece
its incredible just how much goes into adapting manga to animation, huge respect to Dragon Ball directors and animators!
I am sorry but Dragon Ball is two words.

Even a faithful, no filler version of Dragon Ball + Z would probably have to be 250ish episodes. That's a hell of a commitment for them.
@@S.pilgrim I sure damn hope I will! Because death is boring. Well, I guess I couldn't experience being bored anymore, so maybe it's not that boring.

Mannnnn I love every art video from y'all it's so fucking good. Reanimating tho?? Amazing idea
Insane video mark, you and the team have outdone yourselves again
They could just remake the original score
Good. It was an abysmally laughable score.

Legendary CatDestroyer reference 🔥🔥 glad he’s getting that recognition
11:37 I 101% agree with ajay here. Ajay is objectively correct. I have absolutely no objections to this decision whatsoever.
XD
The pan up shot for Vegeta was a nice change, I like the original but this makes his nervousness a bit more obvious in this version so I think it sets the tone a bit better and makes good use of perspective.
(totally not salty about the lack of final flash, but I digress, they gave us a lot of other good stuff)
TLDR: y'all did really good work on this.
Totally not mark torturing himself at his desk for +20 hours again (seriously tho, this was awesome, great video and beautiful animation all around)

But I hate the filler in the original _DBZ_ Anime. It dragged things out to such an annoyingly unnecessary degree.
Which is why I like _DBZ Kai_ more.
