Haven't been into Magic in a while. It seems that it's descended into a lottery deal like sports cards, where nobody gives a shiit about all the main cards in the set, and it's just rip open packs until you get the special insert cards, then throw the other cards aside to rot away in a box. This is sad and pathetic to watch. I think War of The Spark was the last set that was worth watching to open.

Foil and alt art variants. More common than regular frames.
Nothing becomes special anymore so then things like serials or poster cards need to be made. Imagine if they did a modern set with 1/20 packs had a foil lol.

I just saw one for $599 on TCG, but I am not sure if it is a foil card. It is a poster with serial number though. I am not sure if there are any "regular" poster cards that were numbered.

I feel like my LGS was one of the ones who did not buy into the lotr stock, they have next to NOTHING on hand, no sealed and miniscule singles. I am having an impossible time getting the cards i want with the store credit i have. And then a single gets stocked likely from someone who gets another way and it is out of stock within minutes. Yeah as you said, everyone really dropped the bag.

Rudy, there are two factors that are driving the value of cards up: the standard/T2 RCQ season that's going until July and the reduction of print runs. Players need certain cards to play, so their prices go up. Additionally, some players want to bling their decks. Furthermore, the MTG playerbase is rising across the board in all formats because of player-driven events.
Once and for all, drive something very simple into your mind: in a healthy TCG or CCG, the playerbase drives demand for products, which in consequence dictates the prices.
On the other hand, if a TCG or CCG has a majority of investors in their market, we have a tulip bubble; look at the example of Metazoo.
TLDR: a healthy TCG or CCG with a strong playerbase that dictates card and product pricing. Everything else is fugazy.
You, me, and hundreds of others have tried, and clearly failed, to relay this message to Rudy and his minions over the last several years now. I fear that since he has yet to learn, that he never will...
False dichotomy. Most players are collectors and vice versa.
Player-collectors spend more when their cards don't go to zero because they're happy to hold many decks
When it's all just game pieces, just cut down to as few cards that you can still play events as possible

Maybe you should try taking an upper level econ class that doesn't just stop at supply and demand.
I think single are going for so much, because people can buy the exact cards they want rather than pay $300+ for a box that could end up being like the first 2 boxes you opened. I’m buying this box, because I like the overall theme of the game pieces. For others, they can buy 6 awesome cards for $600.00 or gamble on 2 busted box openings full of junk. I think the majority of people will be leaving up to the gambling crowd to buy the boxes and sell them the individual cards. You just need to hope there are more gamblers out there.
I hope there are less gamblers out there so WoTC gets their shit together and stops printing junk.

Right now, there is a #13 Serialized Shadow of the Enemy on eBay right now and it is currently at $565 so it is being at least a $400 card (after fees) is a decent place to start value-wise.
I'd wait until one sells at a price before giving any data.

I think we are seeing this shift because, I know for me at least, QE5 is starting soon as inflation is going up. I think the FED and the government have no intention on taming inflation and illiquid assets will do well in that environment. As business continue to crumble, it is very risky to buy earnings.....collectibles don't have earnings.
I keep trying, but i can't like the art for the poster art. I love this set, but for unique art, they could do better.

Big lotr fan, was skipping because of the "cultural appropriation" but bought into this set after it showed the Hildebrandt cards and I hope that trend continues with future LotR artists being featured. Not a MTG player, just want to collect this set, I know I will never hit all the cards though.

People should calm down, the one that predict the future will be the most rich man in the world. Vintage will always hold value be it TCG or furniture. Even if Magic fails he should have invested in Art or whatever. With AI it will sure give value to Cards that was painted not using it. Wizard will do less print runs if needed and they can give less products. So open some Lord of the rings and smoke a good pipe of tobac. 🎉 Thanks for opening this but I dont like all foils. 😊

FOMO will hit hard in the magic world 2024-2025 when wizards stops printing all of their draft/setboxes and people starting to collect them. I really can see here huge upticks in boxprices cause of these changes. Commander Legends Draft box is my big Invest. Have like 100 Boxes here and they are still completly undervalued for their cards in it (jeweled lotus, Manadrain, Vampiric Tutor, Apex, Scroll Jeskas etc)
silver foil mythics are more rare the the poster foils everyone is sleeping on them and even the rares like Bowmasters too
