You are right, actually this reminded me a those impro shows run on the backdrop of an interview setting where some innocent journalist or reporter trying to talk to the comedian and the inverviewed comedian is improvising an entire show out of it. Abby was in a completely secondary role this time
They're not unconnected. When you tell a corny joke and the other person laughs, it makes you feel satisfied. But Abby's good at keeping a straight face, which makes Alan more desperate and say increasingly-ridiculous things... which causes him to break. He would never get to that point against Andrew or Matt because they would probably laugh at the first joke.
Honestly... I really love the messy episodes. Alan's irreverence paired with Abby's generally PC attitude was hilarious. And drunk Alan... we need more of him, please!
She's no PC they just have similar styles and Alan blinked first. They both mess with the other joke teller as much as they use their jokes for laughs.
I was not 100% certain Alan was totally clean going into this. Even if he was he obviously changed his approach to the whole show. "Do you think I give a f*** about winning or losing here?" For a short dark moment I was not even sure he was happy and making jokes or had some great sadness in his life and just lost it this day.
