ATC Departure Tutorial using X Plane 11

  • Much of what makes using virtual ATC (like VATSIM) intimidating is the format and quick pace of information. First, watch and listen to us simulate a departure from Phoenix. Then, you get to read the pilot script and practice the radio calls. ATC will answer you after 5-10 seconds depending on the length of your script.

    Great tutorial. A bliss! Haven't been on VATSIM nor IVAO yet but it's planned. I'll watch your video over and over again before I dare dive in. I definitely will feel more confident then. Thanks a lot.

    Great stuff!!! I have been on Vatsim for a while now but still not comfortable to get off into deep waters with ATC communications. Mainly 122.800 flying with Vatsim remaining free from controlled airspace.

      We’ve flown on VATSIM only a few times but figured this would help people. The best way to get the hang is find an airport and just sit on the ground and listen. Get used to the phraseology before trying. Then you can find an airport that isn’t super busy and fly a GA around VFR, then you can talk to them and work your way in. Oddly, I work at an airport and speak to ATC daily for my job, but firing up VATSIM and being on the “airplane” side is still a bit intimidating….the irony isn’t lost. -Lee

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Xplane does have a built in atc system, however it is notoriously bad. It is quite common for it to assign an unsafe altitude, and quite a few unaware sim pilots have crashed following it's directions.

    Nice vid man! I’m a newbie to XP11 and I’m loving it so far! Question, I can’t seem to get Autogate to work at all at any airport I’ve been in. I’m flying ZIBO 737. Is the ZIBO plane not compatible with autogate and SAM jetways or something? Or is it certain airports? Do the airports need to be default? None have worked so far. SFO, ORD, MDW, LAX, LAS, SAN, STL, IND, DSM just to name a few.... Thanks for the reply/help!

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, the default airports are not autogate compatible. Check out the freeware scenery by MisterX 6 on Xplane forums. His are compatible. KPHX, KSFO, KPTX are all free, amazing, and autogate enabled.

      @@FlightBrothersFT BTW, out of all the XP11 tutorials out there on YT, your channel is by far the best dude. Clear, concise, slow, not fast. For beginners it’s perfect because it isn’t rushed. It’s a perfect speed. Awesome job man. Kudos. If you ever think of more tutorials, I’d love to see more. Maybe more detailed tutorials on a full short flight from cold to landing but nice and slow so beginners can understand what you’re doing with the knobs and why. Often times people just rush through and don’t explain what you’re trying to do and why the knob does what it does etc....Thanks my man 🙏🏻

      @@gregthegroove thank you, sir! I am actually a teacher in the real world, so I take pride in making these as helpful as possible. This year is so crazy it has really cut into the time Lee or I (Tim) has to fly and make content, hence less tutorials lately. Hopefully things will calm down soon. Do you have a specific aircraft you would like to see a full flight tutorial on?

    • @gregthegroove
      @gregthegroove 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FlightBrothersFT Yup! ZIBO 737. I’ve been getting a lot better but I’d love to see you fly a flight tutorial from cold and dark to arrival gate, passengers off and get the plane ready for a turnaround (not a complete shutdown). Like a connecting flight for example where you will be departing from that same gate for another city. ❤️🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻

    I am so bad at reading back atc instructions. How can I remember it the best? I can't draw all the information on paper that fast.

    Where can I get free airport charts because I'm still a teen and my parents dont want to pay for navigraph

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Within the United States skyvector.com has free charts. They are not as good as the Navigraph, but will keep you going. The main issue you might find is those charts are updating continually, and your Xplane AIRAC nav data is not. Please watch our Airline Flight Planning video and note the part about setting the AIRAC cycle to match your XP nav cycle. That way it generates plans that match the data you have. Or, only fly routes that have not changed substantially (which is probably many honestly).

      An inexpensive kneeboard from a real pilot shop might really help. We both have them and are a great tool, often with a clip, pen holder and some aviation memory joggers on them. We aren’t sponsored but mypilotstore.com and sportys.com are where we’ve purchased numerous items over the years. If you ever decide to fly in the real world, you already have some!

  • @smsfrancis
    @smsfrancis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should never say "ready for take off"

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While a more appropriate call might be, “Tower, Alaska 23 holding short runway 07R”, depending on circumstances a “ready for takeoff” or “ready to go” might be desirable. If an aircraft has a slot time or experienced a technical delay for any number of reasons it may help ATC with departure sequencing.
