- X-Plane 11.30 has a revised ATC voice system that is more flexible than ever before. This video goes through the steps to set up a flight plan and contact ATC for clearance & taxi instructions.

Hello there, this is Jennifer Roberts with a tutorial on using X-Plane 11. Today we’ll take a look at ATC, including the changes coming in the X-Plane 11.30 update. This video was recorded using a preview copy of X-Plane 11.30b1.
First let’s take a look at the Air Traffic Control settings: you can have text, verbal, or both types of ATC messages depending on what you enable here. By default, ATC text & verbal messages should be enabled.
I’ve started a flight at the demo airport Seattle-Tacoma (KSEA). I’m on a GA ramp with our default C172. We’ll walk through the steps on setting up a flight plan and contacting ATC for
clearance & taxi instructions.
To get started, press the return or enter key to bring up the ATC screen. Note that if you hit the enter key and you get a box like this
It is a chat box and means you have multiplayer enabled. Turn it off in network settings to get ATC back.
Press the button “file flight plan” to specify the info about your flight. X-Plane 11.30 has a revised ATC voice system that is much more flexible than ever before. This also means there are a few new fields in this window.
The Aircraft Identification box will list our C172’s tail number by default, but you can change this if you wish. Pick the aircraft manufacturer and model from the drop downs--these are new fields that ATC will use to identify your aircraft when they talk with you.
You can specify the airline and flight number if you wish, but I will leave them empty as they’re not required for our purposes now. The Departure ICAO is filled in for us with our current location, so we’ll fill in our destination airport, which is going to be the nearby Boeing Field (KBFI). I’ll fill in my enroute altitude as 3000. I’m going to leave the route blank because we want to go direct, but you could also enter any NDB/VOR/FIX/Airway to get real routings.
I’m going to go ahead and check the “auto-tune recommended frequencies” box. When combined with the departure wizard which is enabled by default, it makes the ATC process straightforward and easy to use. You can always tune your radios by hand or by double clicking on a line in the ATC window if you prefer.
Let’s “Request altimeter”. Now we need to read back the transmission--note that when I press the “readback transmission” button while ATC is talking I hear a beep--this indicates the line is in use and I have to wait and try again. You can also use the “repeat last transmission” button if you need to hear ATC’s instructions again.
Now we can “request clearance” and read back those instructions. The auto-tune option has already switched our COM 1 freq for us, so we can also request taxi now as well. Acknowledge the clearance as before and then look around you. You’ll see yellow arrows painted on the ground directing you to where you should go. Where the arrows stop, you must also stop and wait for further instructions.
Taxi to where the arrows are taking you. When you reach the side of the runway, ground will instruct you to contact the tower, and autotune the tower freq once you respond.
Check in with this new controller. This is how you tell the controller you’re now on their frequency waiting for their command. If there are AI aircraft using the runway, you will have to wait until they are done. This may take some time! At that time, Tower will call you and give you your takeoff clearance. Respond and then depart. Unless otherwise instructed, fly the runway heading up to your cleared altitude of 3,000 feet.
Once you’re in the air you’ll have additional options to cancel your flight plan and to request missed approach.
At some point, you will be handed off to the center controller on 124.20. Check in as you did before. Continue on your heading and altitude and eventually Center will begin vectoring you to an approach at your destination of KBFI.
Once the approach is set up, you will be handed off to KBFI’s tower for landing and the process continues until you’ve arrived back at the gate.

I appreciate the effort to improve ATC. However, I must admit to being extremely underwhelmed. The robotic voice and the painfully slow tempo are just embarrassing for 2018.

@@MrTrustdesa I understand whant you explain, and i agree , but when you saw what is done by a solo programmer with synthetic voices, we can expect a small company like Laminar to do the same ....and NO the functionality of ATC in XP is BAD ... the "intention" is very good, but in MY opinion , the result is bad !!, for me it's not just a matter of voice quality, but "algorithm organisation" and good reaction of ATC in response at Pilot actions, some randomize to enahnce realism, and real IFR and VFR procedures, (Waypoint SID STAR, VFR report Points etc etc .... ) is FAR MORE important, and this is TOO POOR in XP ATC ....it's possible some plugins to do that , so Why Laminar Don't do ??? ... because i think their Priority are not here sadly ......
Regarding FSX yes it's not very real also, but XP ATC is not better, and about 10 years latter, it MUST be .... that all .....
And last but not Least, XP maybe is a VideoGame for YOU, but don't forget , it's a matter of use and approach in practice which do the difference, and for some simmers like me, it's a TOOL to practice at home some procedure made in REAL LIFE .... so we expect a little level of "realism" ..... I know it's just a tool not the Real Thing , but definitively not just a game ......

person .....after each simmer do what is good for his/her ... we are all differents with differents needs ....
You're right, i also need Laminar concentrate on the core of their job, simulator and flight model , and to maintain it fully

I Started with XP10 then moved to FSX, then moved to XP10 again, and keep the 2, for ME they're both complementary ......

Yes there is some bad vocals soundbank and synthetic voices here, and here, but is not the reason there is not possible do do
better job .... some guys already done ....search ....
for Radio sound an crackles there is tricks can be done by 3rd party ATC developpers , i'm not afraid for that .....
I repeat these are piece of software ....
they are what YOU decide they are, if somebody play with the sim and fly a jet with a mouse,
or "fly" an helicopter with a joystick, and be happy with that .... what is the problem ??? it's a niche videogame and it's cool !
BUT if another one use it a TOOL with Hardware homecockpit, and the maximum of real procedures and hard interfaces, what
is the problem again ?? it's a personnal ( Not professional ) Simulator, and training tool , not a game .....

Radar Contact 4 is in my opinion the best sounding ATC. You get more than one voice and can even record your own.
When X-Plane 12 comes out, I hope the ATC doesn’t direct you to the mountain and I hope there is a departure and approach frequency
Jennifer Roberts, how refreshing it is to hear a female voice in a flight-sim video in a virtual world mostly populated by male simmers. I hope that in the future more women take up this excellent hobby. Thank you for an excellent tutorial. I have just taken the plunge and bought X-Plane having flown mostly FSX and other MS sims since the 80s. Well done and well presented, this video is. I hope you do more videos to get XP newbies like myself a leg-up understanding the workings of this great looking simulator.
1. There is no tower control when I just want to fly touch-and-go.
2. Voice is synthesize which presents no life
3. ATC vector as of 11.2x still horrible, I will never get to my destination safely.
Rather than bitch about a good faith attempt to make a product better, I would like to single out Jennifer Roberts who always tries to give us helpful tips. As a 30 plus year veteran of the National Aerospace System, I can tell you there is still a lot to do but, without paying for limited coverage areas with sometimes well meaning controllers, this ain't bad.
Jennifer, sometime back I called Randy on the non 800 number to ask for some help. Today you solved my problem in the first 2 minutes of the video. Due to a menu issue I inadvertently selected multi player and had that Chat dialog box. When I described the condition to Randy he said I had broke the ATC system and that was my problem. I thought he would know the problem but he responded, I had done this and he couldn't help.
Thanks so much for your video today and keep up the good work and pleasant way you deal with all of us Sim breakers, we really don't do these things on purpose.

What if you want to do a VFR departure or flight will you still be able to talk to atc without having to file a flight plan?

FSX in the ATC voice department was ahead of its time. I hope x-plane will catch up someday. I refuse to use the ATC in X-plane until the voices are realistic. Now if only Jennifer's voice was part of ATC....

Gave the new ATC a spin yesterday. Much improved but was dumbfounded when I was told to REPORT THE FIELD IN SIGHT while flying in IMC. They had me flying at 2000ft and the field was 700 overcast.
Other than the addition of a couple of fields to select the aircraft brand and model, this video does not show anything new about ATC.For instance, have they gotten rid of the annoying requests to change heading, then to resume own navigation, all through any flight?Does ATC still steer you into mountains?Does it still tell you to maintain flight level 340 when you are right above the destination airport?That's the kind of info I was looking for, about this upcoming release; not how to use ATC, which everybody already knows.

I’ve got to be honest, I don’t see any differences. You still can’t fly vfr, request altitude change, or many of the basics.
The only difference in the voices is it sounds like the computer talking back was in a busy bar.
Fsx had a great system more than 10 years ago. There has to be someone out there with experience in that field that can help. X-plane is years above when it comes to realism, but decades behind in atc.
Your videos are excellent. I have recently installed X-Plane because of all the good things I’ve heard and read about it. I’ve flown fsx for over 25 years. In comparison X-Plane could improve on it’s flight school. As I said your videos are excellent but having a much better flight school in the X-Plane program is much better than watching a video. If not for my prior sim flight training in fsx, X-Plane would be rather frustrating to fly. As it is, I’m finding X-Plane a bit overwhelming. The atc voice in fsx is far superior in realism when compared to X-Plane. I hope in future updates it improves. Either way keep up with these great videos.
in one of the past dev streams we got something more promised about how realistic the voice would be. it's definetly an improvement, but not what we got promised, so I'm a bit disappointed.
X-Plane 11 needs to add VFR ATC. As a student pilot its disappointing to see that this feature isn't in the program. Once I learn IFR perhaps I'll appreciate this more but for now I'm left wanting. It would also be great to use the ATC without having to file a flight plan.

Ms/MRS Roberts have a look at the old version of x-plane 9.70 go on the ATC set up and it will inspire you on how to do it. Believe me I have been using Xplane from v9 to now and it is almost perfect except for you ATC going nowhere.
Laminar, please don't take these comments as us talking trash about ATC. Have one of your software developers take notes of what people are saying in the comments and create a to-do list of things that the people want improved. A company earns my complete respect when they listen to the consumer.
Is not the priorities that are all wrong, is the CEO or whoever runs Laminar that needs to be fired. We have been waiting for this Update for solong and literally it did not change any fucking thing in my fly experience with XPlane..

Don't know what people are talking about with the voices. They are FINE. Those commenting about how bad they are, i would like to see you do better. Good job on this Laminar. Not the best but you can always improve it :)
Appreciate the efforts towards adding ATC in xplane. One day it will get there hopefully.
The speech generation is clearly still way behind the decade old FSX. Even flight unlimited of almost 2 decades ago had much better sounding speech. They even had humor in it ("We appreciate you mowing the grass for us ... but please keep the aircraft on the taxiways").
Well...not to push the effort down in improving the ATC but my excitement got deflated after watching this. I switched to Xplane this year after 15 years of FSX and P3D. No way I am going back but the ATC fix is basically a Thanks but No thanks, you must know this. Yet effort is put in on VR and very few use that. The ATC overhaul is a community request that should not exist. ATC should have the same standard as the flightmodel. I will not use it....
It's good to see ATC is being reworked somewhat. But what about VFR? It's been ignored from the start, even though a lot of users are flying VFR (and often, local). Also, the phraseology is not compliant to the ICAO standard, is that an US dialect? Will it be possible to propose other runways/approaches, or to ask to taxi to the fuel station?

There is a plugin called 124th atc v2. Its amazing, and its a good reference for improvement. Voice recognition will be amazing too.
Does this version fix the issue of ATC routing VFR general aviation along high altitude IFR routes? I had to stop using the built-in ATC due to some ridiculous routing both while in-route as well as when entering the traffic pattern (routes me around the airport as though I'm in a airliner when I'm flying a single prop).
And don't forget vectoring you into nearby mountains, or not taking into account local elevations for suggested altitudes (more flying into mountains)!

Yes , ATC seems not to be the priority for LR and VFR is totally forget ...... I'm a VFR Helicopter student pilot in Real and want to practice that in XP ...... so we have just Bad ATC wich not take VFR into account ..... the only solution i found is to use FREEWARE ADDON EASYATC and some chatter files ...... coupled with vocals command with Gamecomander2 ..... try it and tell us !!

Very new to all of this , I was trying to use atc . I was getting frustrated as atc would not let me file a flight plan and my atc “ box” looked nothing like this. I’m assuming I just need to wait for 11.30?
It would also be great to see if the atc will give you SID and STAR, or if it’s still going to vector me into the side a mountain on approaches.

FSX is a flight simulator
X Plane is a blade element theory simulation.
Therefore it isn’t a game.
It may look terrible, but if you compare both vanilla games, x plane would obviously take the lead with visual effects.

How do i tell the ATC the flight plan details which i have already introduced on the FMC? Do i have to write my waypoints, etc manually at the ATC windows? Shouldnt they be linked automatically? I mean the ATC with the FMC.

Laminar, i have x-plane 11 steam and i wanted to know , when is gonna be availaible the 11.30 version ??
I'll review this again, but i used xplane 11 for the first time in atc mode and would have crashed into a hillside if I'd followed altitude instructions. It also took me for miles on a convoluted course.
When i saw this news i hope the improved ATC is so good to decide me to purchase XP V11, But ...... !! yes i'm very disapointed !! I admit Laminar and the few persons at R&D do a very nice job to improve ATC and I Thanks them, but this is not as good as we ( some simmers ) expect ..... So i still look on future XP11 improvements, but still flying with XP 10 .....and Yes there is some very good ATC Addons ( Easy ATC to not name it .... ) and why not Online FLying ...... Sorry for my "not so good English" i'am French .....Best regards to the XP community and Laminar ..... And .... Fly Safe ...
I fill in the flight plan but I don't get any option to file flight plan, its frustrating I'm doing everything stated on video, any ideas what could be wrong?

Can someone explain me what enroute altitude is. I'm flying the 737 800 zibo mod and my flight level is 240 (240.000)
24,000 feet.
240 is 24,000 feet, but atc in real life would say the firsr numbers and then thousand when flying above 10,000 feet. I'm a private pilot knowing this

a question when the 11.30 is stable complete to update the XPL needs before removing the installed addons or can update along with my addons? I am with version 11.26r in this update I do not remove any addon and all work!

This is all good for improvement what about declaring an emergency while flying or changing altitude request, asking for a vor or a precise radar landing and much more that you would find into x-plane 9.70 I know I got both. Now xp11 is far better but for ATC xp9.70 beat the one now

MS Flight simulator had better sounding atc voices years & years ago. I think you spend far too much time & resources on VR. Make your weather environment & atc better & you’ll have the best flight sim on the market.
SP Y msfs is a massive team. LR is a small one
X-Plane Aviation fair enough. Why don’t you do a poll asking what you should concentrate on fixing the most (& what needs to be improved the most).
Many of us believe that spending so much resource on VR is basically running before you can walk.
I love xplane, but I feel it’s only because of the flight model & the pbr materials. It doesn’t have much more going than that...
I agree, it's nice that there are updates, but the atc still being a rubbish, and the VR is taking a lot of times, when there aren't a lot of users.
ATC in any sim has been very limited. Very difficult to synthesize a voice that would sound natural. I don't mind a good system, but even with a great system, I wouldn't be likely to use it much. And the reality is that those people who do use ATC are a very small subset in my observation, which is something LR perhaps sees and you don't. Despite the addons and services available, not all that use them do it 100% of the time. From my point of view, LR is right not to focus too much on it from a business standpoint. ATC will not make them more money. VR will. And VR affects your experience in the sim, ATC does only so much. Many people who would buy XP for the VR wouldn't make a purchasing decision for the ATC. Now do you get it?
So..... you've never tried VR I am guessing or you wouldn't say that! LOL You want better ATC go online best voices out there.

The audio speed of atc is too slow to hear.

I don't know if 11 can do this but i don't know it's possible with the 10 version ....FSX can do this since years ..... other sims also, maybe ? ..... so why XP not ?? At least they are constantly developing (which I appreciate a LOT). I really enjoy the native VR and I’m very excited about the performance increases towards Vulcan implementation.

I’m currently trying to make the decision if I should buy x-plane 11 ? It’s definitely had an overhaul from previous editions but is it good enough for 2018 ? The ATC voiceovers still feel like old school sound files from the old days of FSX sigh, I just seem to get the impression that lurking beneath the surface of modern x-plane 11 are old file architectures. For IFR training, for your own sim or flight training device the old X-plane 9 was very good. All that was needed was the addition of a Glass cockpit, PFD, MFD, and some decent aircraft instead of having to purchase "after market" aircraft that X-Plane want nothing to do with.
If they had put in G1000 or now considered putting in the G1000 nix it would be a huge improvement. After using X-plane 11, and spending thousands upgrading my computer, I'm not seeing any real improvements especially when you also look at the lack of decent ATC audio and the still inability to do STARS and SIDS.
X Plane is way ahead of its time, it used blade element theory to produce a very accurate flight model.
The new fire/contrail/smoke is now produced by the new particle system causing the object to be flung off from the exhaust like a real plane.
Also with x Plane you need a very expensive set up due to its mass scale of the graphics.
Also, x Plane is more stable with the CPU,GPU and RAM than FSX.
How do I know which altitude im cleard for?
MY ATC is broken. I always get something I have to type in.
I keep waiting for ATC to get better, but it doesn't appear to be a priority with Laminar. This should be at the top of the list of things to be worked on.
Still no separate ATC challel for headphones,and no ability to talk to to ATC YET.
They should integrate ATT Natural voices or Ivona.. Those voices are much more real than what Xplane has now.

@@tantegreta Yes. But i dont think you can swap out the TTS engine in xplane on your own. I tried and i could not get it to work. Maybe someone with modding knowledge could do it though.

Try Easy ATC ..... i think this addon developped by a "soloman" somewhere in France is better than this laminar "improvement" .....

WOW, the new controller sounded exactly like the first one.
I'm given about 5 seconds to report field in sight otherwise I am vectored around again. Would like VFR ATC as well. MSFS 2000 had a better ATC system.

The file flight plan never worked for me. I made my own routes in skyverctor web with the updated navdata and most often this tool wrote me the route does not exist or something like that. Really annoying.

I tested the ATC on this game and it is total trash when it comes to landing. They had me going around the airport for half an hour until my fuel ran out.

Jonas Priebe There is multiplayer, it’s only over the network though, but you can get xsquawkbox or Ivao.
Need to add SID's and STAR's option when filing a flight plan.
I know right? X-Plane 12 might have this option
i dont need default atc. i use ivao for example. in my mind its not necessary to update this. look for better performance.

Mate this is X-Plane 11.
Now november 2018 and ATC on x plane 11 have not improve have a look at x plane 9.70 ATC and you will want to fly with this ATC program and notice the request you could demand upon flying. X plane and Laminar Research are the best and hope someone is listening.
A really cool idea would be to add voice induced ATC where you (the pilot) can use your mic to talk back to X-Plane 11 default ATC. I know there is plugins like this, however they're payware :(
Weird that this is one of the only problems I have with the game I mean it is 2018 you must be able to make a better ATC with voice controls. I would check with adding IBM Watson to the game like Star Trek Bridge Crew where I can talk and tell AI NPCs what to do.
