  • We power up the default 747-400 included in X Plane 11, takeoff and engage the autopilot for the beginning of a trip from KPHX-EGLL. Follow us through some of the features and procedures to add a little more realism to your sim experience, and we discuss some of the short comings of this default Queen of the Skies. For any of you looking for some Long Haul mileage for your Virtual Airline, or just for fun, we show why the 744 is worth a second look.

    At this moment in my learning proces, after a whole lot of studying, I use the step climb procedure to cruise level.
    First it was complicated with starting 13 degrees pitch after take off with max take off thrust, at 1000 ft ROC 500 fpm, reducing N1, the flaps settings, etc. etc.
    And the most interesting thing is that after retracting the flaps up at about 260 kts and commence the enroute climb above Fl 100 with 340 kts I can leave the throttle at a fixed setting and N1 will increase automatically.
    Now it's not complicated anymore.
    Flying the Boeing 747-400 is a very beautiful experience every time.
    Thumb up from
    The Netherlands.

      Flight Brothers FT landing with autopilot.
      On 737-800, I’m using the autopilot till 3000 feet from ground. From then I take control and land it manually. I plan same thing for the 744.
      So if it’s possible to show an approach with 744 that includes the autopilot till a certain point (3000-2000) feet.

    I just joined a virtual airline on Sim-FTW that flies several 748s so I recently started to use the default 747 after having flown payware/payware level aircraft for the last couple years. I have to say, I was surprised with some of the detail that was included. The start-up procedure is a little weird but funny what things they did include, like working VNAV and autoland, but excluded something simple like EGT limiter. It can be nice to fly something easy/simple every once in a while and it is super easy to land/hand fly because of its size vs a 737 or smaller that can get blown all over the place landing with crosswinds.

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds pretty typical actually. There are so many skills to get going for an airline style flight. We do have an 'Airline Flight Planning' video to help with simbrief as well as a Default FMC video to help with that. Honestly, Lee and I both do a lot of general Aviation aim flights (Cessna, Beech Baron, Piper) because we can spend less time planning and more time flying.

    I live in Phoenix also and when British Airways started their Phoenix/London flights around 1997 they used the Boeing 777 from and to Gatwick then they started using the 747-400 from and to Heathrow sometime around I believe 2000. I live in northwest Phoenix and t's always great to see the Queen Of The Sky flying above the city after taking off from Sky Harbor. Now that you mentioned BA will retire their 744 fleet, I wonder if they'll go back the 777.

    When at the runway, you have to turn on CON before takeoff
    CON means continuous ignition

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for pointing that out. You would turn these to continuous for takeoff and landing. With the igniters constantly firing, you reduce the possibility of a flameout during a critical phase of flight. You would also use it during heavy rain or turbulence.

      Interesting problem. Is the speed on the MCP set to a normal number for climb, and is the FMC programmed with a cruise altitude? If you go the LEGS page on the FMC you should see the speeds and altitudes it is expecting. The climb page should tell you what the climb speed is set to. Please let us know if either of those work.

I don't quite know how to be able to zoom or focus my monitors (I have 5) at the correct angle so as to properly view the instrument switch panels. Also, the LNAV (lateral) works flawlessly. The issues are VNAV and auto-throttle.

    Have you done a video on the autoland feature?

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No we haven’t Jarrett. We tend to stay away from autolanding. The short story, generally, is as long as all available auto pilots are armed and the ILS is tuned and active on both nav rads, you’re good to go. You would likely get an autoland, or land 3 annunciation depending on airframe.
      We stay away from this for a few reasons. 1) it’s fun to land the plane. 2) the real world situations where you would perform an autoland are fairly infrequent. Best case, likely coastal and seasonal. 3) for realism, the aircraft, navaids and airport must be certified for cat 3 ops, which is when an autoland would be used. This is not always accurately portrayed in sims. Note: the airplane and ILS have different equipment requirements and tolerances they must meet for the certification.
      In my experience (Lee) in sim, almost every airplane can be flown to about 200ft which is usually a CAT 1 ILS decision height. This includes the default Cessna with the S-Tec 55 AP when configured properly.
      I know that’s long winded, but hopefully if you wanted to know how to autoland, I explained that! If not, fire back.

    Sir, can you make a video on how to switch off the engine of 747 properly after landing please...

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually it is rather simple. Taxi to the gate with engines running. Consider starting the APU while taxiing from the runway. Once at the stand, turn on the APU bleeds (for air conditioning) and have the APU on bus for power. At that point click the fuel cutoff switches located under the throttles. The engines will immediately power down. You can then connect ground power if you desire, and shut down the APU. When you are entirely done, shut off the ground power, turn off the battery, and disembark the aircraft.

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe our Zibo FMC tutorial is for SFO-LAX, but it's only programming the FMC, and not flying. If you need help setting up or planning that flight, we have an Airline Flight Planning tutorial, and a default FMC tutorial. Regarding liveries for the 744, Google is your best friend. Many are available on the X-Plane forums, but their own search engine is nearly useless. Try Google 'livery 747 Xplane default.'

    noob here... but i was wondering in a plugin i dloaded called xchecklist the list (clist) for the b747-4 (b744) ie this one you are flying instructs me at one point to turn on the emergency lights but that seems impossible with my game, and i didn't see you turn them on during this checklist eithe....is that correct or is there something i'vr missed....it is interesting though how these things are not in the same order....you would of thought that was the main point ,

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe the emergency lights you are referring to might be a dummy switch or not functional in the default aircraft. I don’t recall if it’s functional in the SSG 748, but it is animated in that airframe. Different checklists, in reality may follow “company policies” and differ slightly airline to airline.

    • @FlightBrothersFT
      @FlightBrothersFT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. There are numerous factors affecting fuel endurance. Weight, altitude, speed, and winds all have an effect. I recommend using simbrief to get a more accurate estimate (it will handle all those variables). Watch our Airline Planning video for directions on simbrief and flight planning for airliners such as B744.

      I cannot remember if that is in there, but here is the information you need. COM radios are located on the center pedestal between the pilots. NAV radios are accessed by clicking the NAV/RAD button on the FMC. This takes you to a custom page displaying the current NAV radio settings. Hover your mouse cursor over the frequency on the FMC screen and you should get arrows for adjusting it.
