Thanks for this! I have just adapted my three Tapo C110 wireless IP camera’s that I use to monitor my 3d Printers within Protect! Had to first setup a local user account on each camera and then use that to authenticate when adapting but works a treat.
Also I did all this offsite while at work via the Protect app on my phone.

I've got my Tapo camera working. Need to enable it in the Tapo app and set a user/password - it looks like they've got a Tuya based app.
No PTZ control, and a few drop outs over wifi, however it works! I wonder what other cheap Tuya cameras will work.
The fact I can pick up a $40 wireless tapo camera from Jb Hi fi and it work with Protect is amazing. Great use case for something not as urgent, I've put one in my garden shed

@@LarsKlintTech Onvif has different profiles that encapsulate various features. It is up to Unifi to implement all of said features though. To be fully Onvif compliant just requires them to fully support a minimum of 1 profile unfortunately. The base profile is 'Onvif S', which should give access to PTZ functions as well as video and 1 way audio streaming. Onvif T should give access to H264 and H265 as well as record on motion events and 2 way audio. Onvif G enables edge recording and Onvif M enables the NVR to read Camera notifications for things like line cross, LPR, facial recognition, area entrance, and other events (Motion tends to be a separate situation and is generally handled by T but some cameras vary. Few systems handle Onvif M, and, from what I've seen, really only Axis, Pelco, and some Hanwha cameras support M. But even then, its not uncommon to have to do a bit of script writing to fully implement M in recorders that assert support for it. M embeds the event type in the stream metadata and you need to pull out the event type from that meta data to differentiate it from other event types: thus the scripting. I've had to do that for Genetec and Axis cameras... but I haven't worked with many other systems that handle M.
I'm not expecting too much from Unifi in this regard. Perhaps they will do a Synology and support S, T, and G but I'm not holding my breath. I suspect they will only do S and maybe some of T. But they did surprise me with not charging licensing to add Onvif cameras so who knows.

ONVIF compatibility is a roll of the dice. I've had excellent success with the TP-Link Tapo C120 Wi-Fi camera, some generic older ONVIF cameras, and even a IPTV 4K encoder (HDMI in, IP video out).
If a specific ONVIF device doesn't work, it could be the device, it could be UniFi Protect problems, or both.
Since UniFi doesn't allow selecting frame rate, resolution, or selecting a specific sub stream, nor is PT PTZ, or camera motion detections supported, ONVIF support is useful, but only for basic live (when it works) and recorded camera feeds.
But it shouldn't be overlooked - excellent consumer ONVIF cameras with 4K resolution and night vision cost as little as $25, while the cheapest UniFi cameras are still much more expensive.

@@LarsKlintTech ONVIF is a discovery protocol that "wraps" RTSP IP cameras. If the camera is not being discovered with ONVIF, I usually don't have any better luck with manual configuration, but always worth a try.
Manual configuration would be a lot more useful if UniFi supported RTSP cameras. Many cameras only have RTSP and do not have ONVIF. (Ironically, if you have noticed, when you export a UniFi hardware camera as a virtual camera stream FROM UniFi Protect for use with other systems, UniFi only supports exporting RTSP, not ONVIF.)
Clearly, UniFi has implemented RTSP and really should support it by itself in a future update.
A good first step for using any ONVIF/RTSP camera is to use it with the free VLC app. If you can get it working with VLC, you have at least verified the camera is putting out ONVIF/RTSP. Then move on to the quirks of UniFi Protect detecting/configuring use of the camera.

I am using ONVIF as a stepping stone really. It doesn't have the same feature set first party cameras have, but it is reliable for 24/7 recording. ONVIF support means I can move to protect fully, without needing to immediately change all my cameras to UI cameras. So I have a few Dahua cameras that I use to have in Synology, as well has a few Unifi Protect cameras, until I can be bothered replacing the Dahua's
I think there are still some bugs in live feeds from ONVIF cameras for certain cameras. Reolink are particularly troublesome from what I have found in expereince ( I have a few Reolink cameras that I retired but they still work) and some reports on the web have had issues with Reolink. @@LarsKlintTech Most likely why most reports are Reolinkl lol.
Reolink do push to a LOT of youtubers with their cameras. They are not bad for the pricepoint. Protect, like many others, detects multiple streams on ONVIF, and I think the issue with Reolink is using different codecs for low res and high res. Their high res is always H265, but low res is usually H264. This upsets the Synology system too, and Synology will only pick up one stream, not multiple ones, with Reolink.

From what I understand the ONVIF cameras only automatically show up to adopt if they are on the default network that the NVR is on. Also for Tapo you have to add a username/password first via the cameras advanced settings and create a ‘camera account’. This is the account used to add it in UniFi.

    #1 no audio
#2 When I open the app, it goes into a camera view and not the page where it shows all the cams. A bit frustrating.
#3 More importantly, when you look at the multi camera view, cameras are out of focus. When I select a camera, it tries to bring the focus in but never does. There have been multiple times when I needed to see something and could not because the nvr never brought ut up. According to unifi, camera connection is "excellent" so not sure what is going wrong.
#4 Issues with retrieving incidents. For instance ,I select a time a few hours ago, and it bugs out and switches to yesterday's video. I will scroll back to the time I want, and it will do it again.
