    I wanted a Chanel bag 30 years ago and I did not buy it then, I sure wont be buying it now. The families of Chanel, LVMH, YSL and Prada are very wealthy, And you have people starving themselves, working multiple jobs, and not saving for their future so they can have a bag. Well, these bags don't hold your things any better than a bag that cost $800. The luxury brands are trying to lock wannabe rich people out of their markets. I dont have a desire to be a walking bill board for these brands. Thanks for sharing Sophie.

    Buyers in the US have also mentioned there is a one bag per month purchase limit at Chanel. They clearly are trying to rival Hermès. If only they could focus on rivaling Hermès’ quality!

    For the greater part I do not agree that you get more back than you pay for a Hermes bag. Most spend a substantial amount just to be considered on a wish list. Add that to the price of the bag and realistically you have not 'made' a cent in profit.

    The cost to make a single Chanel classic flap is several hundred. The quality (or lack thereof) has been exposed among enthusiasts and the subsequent perception is now trickling down to non-enthusiasts. They are on the cusp of surpassing a fellow parisian brand (hint, it starts with H and ends with S) that holds a perception, value, and demand that at the very least warrants their price points. Chanel's brand strategists need to re-evaluate where they're trying to take the company because these price hikes are not sustainable,

    Hi, Sophie! Hope you, David and the bunnies are doing great. I think Chanel is catering to the uber rich and it will make little diffence to the brand if people who aspire to buy a classic flap can't afford it anymore. They want a certain tier of customer for whom price is no object. If the ultra wealthy start to actually care about quality and not only branding, then Chanel will be in trouble. @@patriciaquintela899 From what I hear, the nouveau riche, particularly in Asia are the largest consumers of luxury logo heavy products. Jamie Chua from Singapore is a self made socialite with an incredible birkin-kelly collection. They still would check the bag with rulers to make sure quality is there. I'm not a fan of Hermes bags, but there's no denying the quality is incredible. Chanel is clinging to their traditional gaudy faux pearls and tweed suits, not sure how long the 50-80 yr old something main clientele base will still want them.

    I can afford to buy a new Chanel bag, but I agree, there’s no way the bag is actually worth $10,000. I’ll never spend that kind of money on a Chanel bag, especially due to the drop in quality. How long can the prices go up, while the quality goes down? Isn’t there a disconnect with the decision makers? Can’t they see they’re headed for a serious problem? 🤷🏼‍♀️

    Sophie, first, love your videos and thanks for raising this issue. Here's my take... The Wertheimer brothers, owners of Chanel, are both in their 70s, with a combined net worth of $96 billion. They have spent their entire lives not just being rich, but more importantly, being wealthy -- meaning being focused on increasing their net worth and creating long-lasting financial legacy. In other words, they are focused on making money. In order to make more money, they have to keep increasing their prices on their products, irregardless of the quality or quantity of the products. From the brothers' perspective no matter how much the public continues to complain about the quality or quantity of their products, they continue to buy them. So, why shouldn't they continue to increase the prices? The only way they are going to get the message is when the influx of money starts to decrease to such a level that they feel the impact. But when you've got a combined worth of $96 billion, it's going to take a sustain period of pressure and negative backlash from the public regarding the pricing or people will have to refuse to buy their products.

    I think it’s different depending on whether you have a chanel bag or not. If you don’t have a classic flap and you really want it people will get it. If one has the bag already of course it won’t be worth it to them after all the price increase. It’s also hard to say to people “get it preloved” if they haven’t had one at the store.
    I have chanel from the boutique and preloved but my feelings towards the bags/brand is so different before and after.

    Interesting commentary Sophie. We all arrive at our buying decisions from a variety of reasons, but then there are also trends. As we head into inflation AND recession, is it generally a good time to buy expensive items? For most of us, the answer is “no.” If you can get the expensive item at a good price and you have financial security? The answer may be “yes.” Should we sell when others are selling due to financial distress? If we don’t need to sell, we should “hold.” More inventory means lower prices. So the general advisory at this time is that it is a buyers market.

    One thing you need to remember is how retail works as a business. When you generate £100 in revenue for the store, the cost of goods sold for that product is typically £40, leaving the store with a gross margin of 60%. This 60% covers the rest of the cost structure, incl. labor, rent, utilities, marketing, organization/management etc. Typical to see bottom-line leave 6-8% for net profit margin, recently we've seen more variance with this number (towards the upside, as pricing power has been surprisingly strong for retail). EDIT: Just to emphasize, Chanel is not standard retail product. But I know perfumery works based on these margins, even on the upper end of niche with brands like Amouage.

    • @Urmomlolllllll
      @Urmomlolllllll ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do agree about changing cost structures, however, I believe Chanel has actively chosen to go this route simply out of greed. There are plenty of other (luxury) retailers facing the same structural increases and they relay some of these on to the client but they don’t jack up the prices by 60%. What makes Chanel’s move even more outrageous is the compromise in quality which indicates that their production cost most likely went down.

    I totally agree with you, Chanel's bag sales here in Europe and America will drop with these obscene prices, and I think eventually we won't consider Chanel to be as desirable as they were. It's sad to watch a couture house going down like this.
    However, the Asian/Chinese market is a different affair, because of the cultural differences. Whilst the Chinese are in general very savvy with their money, when it comes to status symbols, that can go out the window.
    I work in vintage and second hand shops in London, one of our stores is on Neal Street, and we have grown a reputation for vintage Burberry trenches. Our best customer are Asian students, and whilst we usually have Aquascutum and other brand trenches, they only consider Burberry.
    The number of times an Asian customer has asked for a student discount (which we don't do) to then drop hundreds of pounds on vintage Burberry trenches or Harris tweeds, it's mind boggling. And our boss always says that Aquascutum trenches are better made, although not as pricey.
    So I think Chanel bags will keep selling like cakes in China, at least for a few years.

    The Chanel market has already dipped I think, at least in the UK. I was speaking to my SA the other day who told me sales were down thanks to the price increases, not to mention a massive dip in the UK market thanks to the fact that there is no more VAT refund for tourists, prompting them to go to Europe instead.

    Chanel try’s to get rid of the mainstream customers, the ,, I Safe up for this bag ,, client. They want Chanel to go back to niche and aristocratic super rich status. Prestige and overexposure play a huge role in marketing strategies. Pushing the price for a bag to 10.000 means also limiting the exposure. Wich keeps Chanel as a brand valuable. Basically it’s better to sell 1 bag to a ultra rich woman then 3 bags to a middle class woman.

  • @Enchanteralle

    I bought a couple classic Chanel pieces few years ago and I'm glad I did because with the price increases these days, I can't justify spending my money on Chanel bags with possible quality issues. Luckily the items I bought back then don't have quality issues. I recently branched out to other brands such as Dior and Fendi. The quality of their bags are way better than Chanel. The craftmanship and the customer service I received are superb. I know it depends on the location and store, but my recent experience with Dior and Fendi customer service convinced me to be a returning customer. I have never experienced excellent customer service at Chanel...it felt more like they were getting their jobs done to get my credit card swiped. And Hermes...forget it. I end up getting frustrated every time I walk in because I'm either ignored or get assisted by an SA who looks like she is waiting to get off her shift. For the price people pay for Chanel bags....it's really just the logo/branding. The quality, craftmanship, and customer service doesn't match up with the price for sure. I love Chanel, but I don't feel my heart flutter like I used to when I walk into a Chanel store.

    I lost interest in Chanel two years ago when I saw the quality drop. My next Chanel bag will be vintage, but not if resale continues to price gouge. I just purchased a Midi Mayfair that Ive been eyeing for a couple of years but wasn’t sure about. Shipping to the US was fast, the bag is beautiful and the craftsmanship is far superior to Chanel. I’m happy to leave Chanel for the people looking for a status bag instead of a quality bag.

    I have waited years to be able to afford the classic flap...now that I can I don't want it. 10k is a car, and when you feel these bags they don't even feel high quality. I bought the mini square one for 5k a few years ago and I guess that will be it for me for Chanel. Its really sad because its a nice bag and I WOULD want it but I just can't justify it in any way anymore. Even 5k for that mini when I feel the quality seems crazy. My YSL are a fraction and the quality seems way better

  • @julierusso3642
    @julierusso3642 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think Chanel is intentionally raising the prices at an extortionate rate in an attempt to dilute the market. There are so many classic flaps in circulation and they appear all over social media so perhaps they don't seem as "special" as they used to be. It could be a bit of a long con ~ if there are fewer classic flaps out there for the next, say, 5-10 years, that leaves room for a resurgence. Regardless, I think this strategy might be giving Chanel the exact result they are seeking...if the bags don't sell, there are fewer in existence and if they do, the profit margin is ridiculous. And let's not forget, every price increase dominates the discussions across social media. If nothing else, it keeps Chanel's name in our mouths.
    On a side note, I feel like Louis Vuitton might be doing the same thing with their monogram.

    Ridiculous considering the quality issues. But there will always be fools with too much money buying them. Cost of labour??!! Don't make me laugh ? Are they paying their labourers more ???? Cost of material ? The quality is going down so how does THAT make sense?
    Those bags are NOT worth that amount of money.

    • @Urmomlolllllll
      @Urmomlolllllll ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. They are sourcing inferior material increasing profit (greed), producing more cheaply increasing profit (greed) which result in the lack of the previous quality… yet have the nerve to ridiculously increase the price to the consumer. Why take inflationary 10-15% when you can make 80% along the way? Outrageous!

  • @nathanielcraig3588
    @nathanielcraig3588 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So, a Chanel medium classic flap would cost me around $13,000CAD, I could easily get a pre-loved Birkin, Kelly or Constance for $13,000CAD. That's also the low end of the boutique prices for a Birkin or Kelly for people who can get one new. Once Chanel is more expensive than Hermès, people $13,000 for a bag will probably choose Hermès over Chanel, at least new. The people they're catering to with the manufactured exclusivity will absolutely just go to Hermès instead as the prices get to high, cause they can afford it and they'd rather get more for their money. Chanel is doing this all wrong for longterm growth and profits...

    I respect your opinion as always @Sophie Shohet 😊 but… IMHO, some bags are worth getting preloved others are better at the boutique. I am not talking about seasonal bags here, I am talking about the ones that retain value the most, examples are: some CFs coveted colors and specific seasons specially in small or medium sizes, almost ALL minis even more if they are in leather and sometimes in specific colors, and a few caviar seasonal pieces to name a few. If you go look for them in the second market, they are over the retail price even after discounted 😢 Also, minis and some coveted color pieces are getting harder to get as the quantities are being more limited now in the boutiques. Btw, your caviar top handle mini is one of the most coveted bags now, all top handle minis in caviar are now going for a lot more in the resale market.😊 I am in the USA and I don’t shop ever at VCollective so maybe that’s why I don’t see the good prices? 😂
