I've been looking for a T7 for a while. I love that it's one of the few bikes that lacks (most) of the modern electronic trickery. I want to see how bad a rider I am, not have a computer fix it for me.
Great and fair honest review, thank you. On my side, I tested them all, AfricaTwin1100, DucatiDesertX, Norden901, Tenere700, Tuareg660. I was close to a deal for the Tuareg when I found a brand new 890R of 2021 at a bargain price: she is now in my garage. Anyway the Tuareg660 was excellent, I felt better on it than the Tenere, my background being enduro bikes. I had WRF400, WRF250, EXCF450, EXCF500, and I feel good on the 890R. DesertX is excellent too but price is insane. Tuareg660 is pretty close to my 890, handling and engine feel, but 890R is 1 step above.
@@feezee82 I rode with a 2016 CRF1000L DCT for 45.000km, half of it on TET like tracks. It is an excellent bike for TET, especially with DCT, excellent suspensions, well balanced chassis, very torquey engine at low revs. Only drawback for me is weight as I 'm getting older (66 years old), hard to to lift up when dropped in a deep rut alone. I won't ride my 890R offroad, better with my 500excf, 108kg I can manage alone.
Great review guys. I own the T7 and added the Rally Raid suspension. It really made the bike feel a lot better all around. Should have come like that from the factory.
As a taller rider 186cm I went with the 2024 tenere 700. Just picked it up. I like the review you guys give. I went for the tenere because it is simple. I dont like throttle by wire on any motorcycle, especially dont like all the traction control and buttons, maybe some day I will. Fyi, the new display on the tenere is way better than older versions.
I have had a WR250R I put 20k miles on. Then two WR450Fs with similar miles. Big Yamaha fam. Im choosing the Norden 901 or the KTM 890 Adventure R for my next bike. I dont need a "crutch" to make it through a trail with my skill level, but I can appreciate not feeling ad fatigued from riding a more top heavy and slower bike at the same pace. I rode a T7 anf 890 Adventure R back to back and the KTM is a lot easier to ride at highway speeds as well as low speed technical riding with its lower slung center of gravity. The question reallt becomes more about "value". If you want to ride safer on rougher stuff you will need to drop a few grand on the Tenere suspension. Then at that point, the price difference is a lot closer so "value" gets a lot more subjective.
I have a T7 but I have to say I felt really well sitting on 890 but I don’t do as radical riding as you guys so the suspension isn’t a problem for my type of riding with it…for now haha
Really good review. The T7 engine torque and quality, ride position, the KTM suspension, design and parts, cut out all the silly electronics...That's the bike that works?
Nice review. Had an early 790r which I ended up selling for reasons unrelated to the bike. A couple of years later I was in the market again and went with the 890r. Considered the Tenere but the higher center of gravity, smaller fuel capacity, and stock suspension issues offset the higher price of the KTM. Both great bikes but the 890r is the perfect mid size adventure bike for me. Seems like the stock suspension on my 2022 890r is a bit more compliant than on the 790r I had. Overall reliability would go to the Tenere no doubt. So far my 890r has been fine but it's early days.
Hey guys - this is an awesome video in the sense of how you compared the two bikes - would you be able to do something similiar with the T7 World Raid to see how the new suspension works in comparison?? THAT would be double awesome ;-) cheers Rgs from germany ;-) Mike
Thanks for your views. You don't need to buy the electronic aids when you order the KTM. Mine has none of the extras, for the reasons you stated. The Yamaha is not powerful enough for road riding - I use every horse power the KTM has, but when off-road I regulate the power with the cylindrical device on the right of the handle bars. I've been doing this for 43 years! In my view the KTM's suspension is too hard - my sag figures are: front 50, rear 67. I would like to see around 80mm. I'm regular weight (85kg). This is a disappointment.
my old 990 adv help me a lot, almost any trail was a piece of cake, now with the tenere 700 feels a little more of a workout but with time I will probably dial up the wrist to handle the bike. A little price to paid for reliability poor 990 almost 16 years old, I was like the 8th owner and full of electrical gremlins. I still miss you 990 :,D
Excellent commentary on the Yamaha. I agree on these positive/negative comments. The T7 suspension stock engineering is baffling considering how well the YZ/WR lines are widely regarded as having class leading suspensions. My T7 is amazing until you over-ride the suspension. Definite cost savings are throughout the T7. Unfortunately. World Raid edition addresses these issues for me except for cruise control. I have throttle hand fatigue on distance riding.
for the T7's base price even spending $3000-$3500-USD on complete aftermarket suspension like the Tractive extreme units your still under budget of most of its competition
The Tuareg 660 solves the problem of having to choose between the 890, and the T7. The Tuareg660 solves the problems of both, low seat, low centre of gravity, topnotch suspension, just enough, superb electronics, proper creature comforts, sporty, and above all fun. As for long term reliability, the Aprilia Tuono 660, the base of the Tuareg, is a good indication. I think the second iteration of the Aprilia Tuareg, will be unbeatable. Aprilia should work towards this end, because they have a winner on their hands.
Top notch suspension is the Xplor on the KTM;) and the weight isn’t as low as the KTM either. And type in “Tuareg issues” on YT. you’ll see a guy list all the issues he’s had, including leaking oil.
Great comparison, for the Tenere I would order it from new with the YA8-18000-00-00 Ohlins T7 YA818 Rear Shock and FKA-11400-00-00 Ohlins Front Shock Cartridge options from new, be ready to go!

Such a bummer about the suspension. I ride the Husqvarna 501, but I need more reliability for solo cross country Nevada and western desert trips. I'd def prefer the 890 R, but I'm done with breaking down in the middle of nowhere. The last time it happened I was just too close to pushing my Garmin SOS button.
Riding a T7 now, with revalved suspension, which makes a proper difference. However I consider a KTM for the same reason as you: time for change. My only doubts are the ergonomics, since I am 1m93 tall. Would you think the KTM is less suited for taller riders?
The KTM is marginally more cramped. Bar height is the main difference and very easy to fix with risers. They offer a taller seat if your legs feel cramped. The wind protection really isn't great even for us. Sascha has the touring screen for long rides.
The world raid tenere fixes the issues with the suspension... but also yamaha has come out with a few other variants of the tenere as well like the rally and explorer which are above the base model t700... i have not have had the opportunity at all to ride both bikes as a comparision and really it all comes down to the riders needs, the ktm is much much easier for the novice to ride and shorter riders when 99% of people buying the bike are only going to ride fire trails and some dirt roads to travel (adventure) to a destination.... not so much use it as a dirt bike... this is where its really hard when you can have an amazing ktm 500 exc-f as a light weight ADV for the real enduro cross and heavy rides but also just have the mid size bike for the long accross the country rides
I love both. Totally different machines. Pros and cons with both. I own each and question the $5000 difference going down dirt and gravel roads, but ripping goes to the KTM.

Now that some time has gone by it is interesting to see how both of these companies have reacted to opinions and comparisons. As of now KTM has completely improved the 890R (2023) and Yamaha has done what Yamaha always does and are still sitting their thumbs. You still cannot get a T7 for the most part here in the states, the only one you can get in the states is the original at a massively elevated price which means you would be paying for old tech on the T7 vs brand new everything on the 890R and you would be paying the same price. Yamaha is so freakin stupid it blows my mind. The fact that the World Raid and other improved models are not available in the states is such a massive oversight by Yamaha. That being said, and I can't be the only one to make this move.....I would have strongly considered the T7 World Raid since it is a proper competitor to everything else but nope, not available. What did I do? I just bought the Desert X and I may, down the road, also get the 890R. How a company as large as Yamaha cannot keep up with KTM blows my mind because supply chain issues affect everyone equally. I can't even imagine the amount of sales Yamaha is losing because of how behind they are. I can attest to one case that is for sure. This has nothing to do with how good and how reliable Yamaha bikes are and they are it just points out which manufactures want it more. The original T7 is a great bike no doubt and it is a budget friendly bike but it is nowhere in the league of the 890 or Desert X......the World Raid is.
@@justsomedude445 I ended up buying the Ducati Desert X. It was more expensive but it literally has no weaknesses. It is amazing on road and off road. It has every feature you need, expandable gas tank, cruise control, etc. I find the DX to be closer to the T7 than the 890 but has the balance of the 890, great suspension, faster than both and feels like a true off-road capable machine. Because it is longer it is more stable off road and does not get as harshly deflected. The rider modes are very impactful and the tech is the best in the class. For me it was worth paying more and I even got the Termy exhaust upgrade with the Evo tech package. The T7 is a bargain but if did the same tings to the T7 that already exist on the DX you would end up paying the same. Ducati was very clever in the DX design. I would have considered the World Raid but Yamaha is just plain stupid for not bringing it here. Anyway, good luck!
It’s concluded separately in the video. 890R has better suspension. Teneré has better engine. Ergonomic wise the KTM is a better trail riding bike, T7 is a better long ranger Electronic, KTM is superior no doubt, but the Yamaha seems doesn’t need that much anyway, so it’s a mindset difference. Finally, they’re surprised that in their experience 890R is more reliable than T7, though the KTM comes across more issues but all small problems, but Teneré engine problem happened much earlier than expected. But it’s just their own experience narrowed down to only 2 bikes, can’t represent the entirety.
I liked they way you analyzed both bikes. I'm currently looking to replace my 990 with either the 690 or the tenere 700 World raid.I was wondering if the world raid is any better compared to the 890.Thanks!
I've never seen a World Raid here. If we get a chance to ride one, we'll make a video about it for sure. I'm also very interested if the suspension is a big improvement.
world raid is a better bike straight out of the box ,no need to do suspension, carrys its weight lower as well. i have a T7 and world raid. ktm890R and 790R are good bikes have rode them and mate has got 890R. he rides T7 more off road than his ktm890R. we both have very good set up T7 . had my T7 39 months had one of the very first ones. done 15,000 miles. most of them have been off road. only thing i have had go on it is the side stand switch that i smashed on a rock, by pass it if you do a lot of off road.
@@adriantompson Thanks for the input !Do you have crash bars on the WR?I f i get one i plan not to install crash bars at all.I do very much off road in all sort of terrain. Thanks!
both bikes are good off road there is nothing between them you cant use all the power on the wr off road . only thing i can say about both bikes is the yam feels more like a enduro bike off road it turns so good. ktm890r does not turn in as good.. you have cruse control on the ktm . only thing you have on the T7 WR is you can turn abs off. you can run higher gears on yam any amount of torque. this sounds mad but on ktm you are up and down gears all the time and is easyer to stall. check my channel ride all sorts off road and on road. stock T7 has crap suspension. wr has good suspension. buy what you want ktm and yam are both good bikes .
Well, that's a very ignorant opinion lol. A good all rounder that casually blows shocks and has brake failures. Ktm - performance over reliability, T7 - reliability over performance.
I own a 23 890R. The stock bash plate on the tank has given no issues in situations I was questionable on. I have read that some aftermarket crash bars that add width down-low can catch rocks and other things but the stock tank and plate isn’t a problem.
@@justsomedude445no but i have seen them get stuck because of the width of them. mate has a 890R and a T7 he will take the T7 when it gets tight and hard going. he loves his 890R but he does say the tanks get in the way some times.
so your contention is they use twin cyl adventure bikes for hard enduro then and they shockingly dont work as well as say a 250 1cyl 2stroke hard enduro bike ?? id have never guessed @@adriantompson
Very interesting that you’d call traction control a “gimmick” that is aiding the rider in some way that a more inherently tractable engine isn’t? So using this logic, wouldn’t you call better damped/sprung suspension an unfair rider assist???? IMO a better handling bike is more desirable no matter WHY it delivers.
The Aprilia 660 has a great chassis, similar to the Triumph 900, but it's a little top-heavy when compared to the KTM. The Aprilia's engine is dull and lacks power.
Nice but sorry to say, the T7 is almost 1/2 the price of the 890ADVR full package electronic stuff you do not need....but for sure nice trail. Also the T7 is heavier, but if you revalve the suspensions, then you got a nice bike.
Because you have a ton of power which comes into play when you get out on dirt roads. I ride a super tenere (600 lbs) and it's heavy, but with good tires and technique you can really throw it around, especially on flowing single/dual track. But when I get a stretch I can easily hit 70 mph, and if it's a dirt road I can easily do 100+ mph. It's all about your terrain. If you ride mountainous single track, sure, get a single cyl, but if you do any highway riding, dual track, dirt roads, a middle weight 2 cyl adventure bike will be more fun if you like to go fast.
The feeling of being able to go anywhere is really amazing. Sure, a single cylinder 450 is going to be better off-road, but being able to hit the single track and then the highway on the way home is really cool. Long distance rides are really where these bikes shine compared to smaller ones.
DIFF HORSES FOR DIFF COURSES !! but why not ??!! , when i see this type of comment i think of myself 25 years ago when i had not had the experiences ive had since then , i hope that you enjoy your motorcycling journey as much as i have and still am

The original T7 is a great bike no doubt and it is a budget friendly bike but it is nowhere in the league of the 890 or Desert X......the World Raid is.
what did you buy ?? i agree with all your points was in the same dilema
I know the 890 advr has better everything (except reliability) but its also 4000-5000 euro more expensive! That's over 1/3 the price of the tenere!
So whats the conclusion? 😅 it's not in the video?
It’s concluded separately in the video.
890R has better suspension. Teneré has better engine.
Ergonomic wise the KTM is a better trail riding bike, T7 is a better long ranger
Electronic, KTM is superior no doubt, but the Yamaha seems doesn’t need that much anyway, so it’s a mindset difference.
Finally, they’re surprised that in their experience 890R is more reliable than T7, though the KTM comes across more issues but all small problems, but Teneré engine problem happened much earlier than expected. But it’s just their own experience narrowed down to only 2 bikes, can’t represent the entirety.
basically the T7 is better
I liked they way you analyzed both bikes. I'm currently looking to replace my 990 with either the 690 or the tenere 700 World raid.I was wondering if the world raid is any better compared to the 890.Thanks!
I've never seen a World Raid here. If we get a chance to ride one, we'll make a video about it for sure. I'm also very interested if the suspension is a big improvement.
@@motoskillsfactory Thanks!
world raid is a better bike straight out of the box ,no need to do suspension, carrys its weight lower as well. i have a T7 and world raid. ktm890R and 790R are good bikes have rode them and mate has got 890R. he rides T7 more off road than his ktm890R. we both have very good set up T7 . had my T7 39 months had one of the very first ones. done 15,000 miles. most of them have been off road. only thing i have had go on it is the side stand switch that i smashed on a rock, by pass it if you do a lot of off road.
So he went from a darn good all rounder to a bike he is going to need to spend lots of $$ to get it right. Nuts. Just get the Aprilia, job done.
Haha no one buys them
…. And they leak oil;)
Well, that's a very ignorant opinion lol. A good all rounder that casually blows shocks and has brake failures. Ktm - performance over reliability, T7 - reliability over performance.
Lol good luck taking that in Baja or anything hard. Not sure where to get parts for that down here
only bad thing on a ktm 890R is them tanks can get in the way off road. i ride a good set up T7 love it.
The T7 is definitely thinner. But we were riding some narrow trails and the tanks didn't cause any issues. They're impressively designed.
I own a 23 890R. The stock bash plate on the tank has given no issues in situations I was questionable on. I have read that some aftermarket crash bars that add width down-low can catch rocks and other things but the stock tank and plate isn’t a problem.
that low tank design has been out for a long long time now and raced everywhere i have not seen anyone who has broken or damaged it yet have you ??
@@justsomedude445no but i have seen them get stuck because of the width of them. mate has a 890R and a T7 he will take the T7 when it gets tight and hard going. he loves his 890R but he does say the tanks get in the way some times.
so your contention is they use twin cyl adventure bikes for hard enduro then and they shockingly dont work as well as say a 250 1cyl 2stroke hard enduro bike ?? id have never guessed @@adriantompson
Let us compare apple and orange
Very interesting that you’d call traction control a “gimmick” that is aiding the rider in some way that a more inherently tractable engine isn’t? So using this logic, wouldn’t you call better damped/sprung suspension an unfair rider assist???? IMO a better handling bike is more desirable no matter WHY it delivers.
I want the t7. I don’t want technology. Hi won’t be doing anything hard either. Just fire roads, twistys.
KTM 890 ADVENTURE R ALL DAY!!
EVERY DAY !!
Talk about misconceptions! T7 has no electronics, and supposed to have less things go wrong. Not in this case.
The Aprilia 660 has a great chassis, similar to the Triumph 900, but it's a little top-heavy when compared to the KTM. The Aprilia's engine is dull and lacks power.
In my country the KTM is about 50 percent dearer.
Poor bugger. Here in Australia, Tenere is $20K, 890R is just on $26K
i look at my screen a lot while riding
Money also different ⋯⋯
Yes ktm are greedy bastards
Nice but sorry to say, the T7 is almost 1/2 the price of the 890ADVR full package electronic stuff you do not need....but for sure nice trail. Also the T7 is heavier, but if you revalve the suspensions, then you got a nice bike.
You can revalve and respring the t7 into a monster. Look at Camel adv. Even with all that still cheaper than the ktm and it won't blow up 😂
Yamaha RELIABILITY IS UNMATCHED
Funny that you called riders like Chris Birch a Starbucks rider for using a bike with gimmicks, to be clear i ride a 2007 990 Adventure S
Interesting he calls a 450 a “ small “ bike.
He means in comparison to 700-1300 cc adventure bikes. ;)
Intros on short YT videos are annoying
Why go offroad with a bike that weighs over 400lbs?
Get yamaha to manufacture the ktm890 design. Problem solved. The T7, then, need not exist
boom

КТМ is Chinese, must be Austrian, and Yamaha is Japanese. So, nothing to compare.
T7 wins easy
