In the space of about a year, I had understanding of music and its power irrevocably transformed by a handful of albums that I discovered in quick succession. The three most formative: The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists.. Sigur Rós - ( ) The first time I ever experienced Untitled #8 (Popplagið) I was sat in my car in the midst of a raging thunderstorm. Parked at a Bayview reservoir looking down from the peak of Thornhill all the way down to the Toronto shoreline, lightning blasts and pounding rain giving punctuation to the drumbeat of the final section. It was a truly spiritual experience.
And so it has been a good 21 years for this wonderful album. I bought it as soon as it came out. I haven't listened to it in a long time, even today every single note is pure magic ✨
Just like how Agaetis Byrjun focuses on the beauty of the stars, ( ) focuses on the beauty of the Earth and the journey our lives must face. Such a beautiful and transcendent album. The back half to this thing might be one of the best back halfs ever.
It's Midnight, completely alone in home. Staring at the dark night sky and pale colors of the city buildings through my large window. And listening to this album. Feeling loneliness, wonderful music, sadness, strange kind of peace in heart. And thinking about what happens to our dream when we die. Do our dreams fly with our souls at the other side of the world?
When I was 19 I did astral travelling to the limit experimenting by myself, and thinking of the riff of untitled 4 helped me to love as much as possible
