  • Today we will discuss the Sil Lim Tau form's arm cutting movement. This movement is often overlooked but it has many applications. We will also look at how the idea can be applied and how to practice it solo with the proper energy.
These days you may not be able to find a partner to train with, so there are a few drills in there to help you train it. Enjoy!

There really can’t be very many Wing Chun practitioners who are much better than Sifu Adam. 🙏 ☯️

My sifu also explained that the emphasis is not on the hand that is shooting down but on the lower hand that is retreating. It's a way to get out of a trap, focus on pulling the hand back and striking forward over top of the hand that was shooting downward.

To me it’s less of a “technique” and more of a principle on hand replacement. You train that when your hand meets resistance or an obstruction you change angle and use hand replacement. Once you see hand replacement it’s hard not to see it everywhere in the system.

This is an excellent video. One tends to think this move was to disengage a grab to the wrist, then counter strike. I am so happy i have found this channel. Thank you Sifu Adam.

Very nice explanation on this part of the form. I was always taught it represents the principle of 1 hand in and 1 hand out. The form has so many concepts and layers. Thanks for the videos and keep up the good work.

Man, this is possibly one of the best wing chun tips I've ever heard. Never thought the cutting hands were useful due to the wrist grab but now it all makes sense. Thanks man!

Excellent! The corkscrew motion allows the arm to ride over the opponent's arm, dissipating the energy as it travels over the arm. So instead of a direct blow, it is now a glancing blow that allows the energy to dissipate over the movement so the wing chun guy doesn't take the full brunt of the attack. This is also true in stopping a high, hard kick as well, along with stepping in on an angle, which will also dissipate power as he goes past the maximum point of power. This can be done by either jamming the kick while stepping in and catching it BEFORE it reaches peak power, or AFTER it reaches peak power, by stepping in on an angle (stepping back and away from the kick, on an angle, allowing it to go past the point where the most power is made), where you can attack the kicking leg, or the weight-bearing leg. This corkscrew motion is seen in ALL wing chun hand techniques, and allows us to deflect the attack rather than BLOCK it!

This technique is used to remove arm-grab. He can't do that smoothly because his biomechanics is distorted like other mainstream Wing Chun practitioners. Our Udemy course explains and solves this error.

Great video! My ving tsun teacher used to tell me this is the most misunderstood principle in WC families. He was very big on the idea of the structure you discussed and replacing hands found in all three empty hand forms(I never got to the weapons in depth, but I am sure it’s in there somewhere lol)

This is why no matter what lineage it is, when we can always explore our basics.
You can find so much in Sil lim tao if you just open your mind and evolve beyond preconceived notions and programmed way of thinking "there's only one way" hence the name "little idea"!
See for yourself if it works and if it doesn't, that's your truth and if it works for someone else don't knock them!

Alot of movements can redirect force vertically to the face. I.E. not economical movement..
Adam, you are demonstrating a forward motion chop horizontal to the facial region or neck and not directing it lower as like the guan sau works for redirecting abdominal attacks.
I note your efficiency maintains protection of the ribs and arm pits that if need be can be utilized as a catch to the body. But we always want that little space below keeping our elbows aloft by a fraction, for movement or a catch, not for getting pinned.
Great when it's used as a returning elbow to intercept after recouping from your own reach extension. This corresponds well to the elbow energy return when the fist is withdrawn in Si Lim Tao.
The withdrawing or rest position of the elbow is Wing Chuns biodynamical safeguard. It provides range for methods of bridging as well as isolation a quadrant of the body which may or may not need to be enabled to respond or pivot force with counterbalance.

More people need to understand when or if the groin is vulnerable to the principles of Wing Chun positioning, stance and when stepping. It's often exposed due to the hip flexors right? 😉

I am sorry but you are supposed to NOT cut but strike in this movement. First Form is all about the punch and so is this movement. You learn to move punch and Wu Sao at the same time here.
What you explained comes way way later in the third form.
(I am training for a decade in WSL Lineage)

@Tai Chi Tube I dont see a problem with balance here at all.
Also you train the proper alignment, cutting the space in front of you and also the simultanious movement of wu so and the punch. Form is not shadowboxing, you train specific ideas and aspects of the movements. Also chi sao is not sparring. It is training. So I dont see the problem here
