Depends on the student. Some get very easily overwhelmed and eventually get struck with analysis paralysis, completely unable to function. With some students you have to just focus on getting one thing right at the time.

Once they practice without correction for a prolonged period of time, it becomes much harder to later correct because of muscle memory. It is more beneficial to the student to correct them as earlier as possible.

My Baji teacher used to give two choices to his students: correcting every little movement until the basic forms were close to perfect if not perfect or have 60 to 70% down then correct them along the way.
From my experience, those who went through the pain of correcting every little thing from the start had less things to correct when we went to most advanced forms. We started slower, but we progressed faster. My teacher used to say that learning martial arts was all about learning when to struggle more; at the beginning or in the middle of learning.

I don't know how kung fu training actually works but in the movies the master is always harsh and tough loving in their approach to teaching. If that's accurate at all then the "correcting" seen in this video is rather mild.

Your explanation of the movements' details is essential to proper technique, and little understood by most martial arts teachers. Please consider doing an entire series detailing the principles and applications of the movements and especially, why those details are essential to the successful completion of the forms. On the day that I took my first Wing Chun class, I mentioned that I hadn't taken a martial arts class since 1989 (Ed Parker Kenpo). About half way into the class someone asked if I was either pranking them or if I was a Wing Chun boss like in the TV Show Undercover Boss because I was doing way too well for what I had advertised as my skills. At the basic level the form is monkey see , monkey do. This reminds me of the TV show "So You Think You Can Dance" where very good dancers have to walk into a studio and learn in 1 day a 3-ish minute choreography possibly in the dance style that they have never done.

While intuitive, many people will try to block or parry strikes outside of that "airspace" and therefore waste a lot of energy, or worse, over-extend (as in lose structure/form). I'm about 3 months into learning Wing Chun and am still trying to fully memorize the Siu Nim Tau. I'm taking a slow approach, slower than some of the other students who started with me, but yeah it's not easy. In our classes my sifu emphasizes memorizing the full set of motions first (with as good a form as we can imitate), then working on perfecting those forms once we've got the full Siu Nim Tau down. It looks like Adam emphasizes perfecting each set/position in the form before moving on to the next. I think that would definitely make it harder for me and up the frustration level. Curious why that's your preferred approach?

  • @matthewberner9732

Precision does Not come easy. Unfortunately it is Easy to develop bad form/habits. What I like about Adam is that he’s going to show you the Major difference in what seems like a minor mistake. Like every good exercise you are going to “feel the burn” in this case it’s as much in your head as in your body.
