ARE CHINESE DIESEL HEATERS A SAFE WAY TO HEAT A CAMPER VAN?
I’ve seen so many of these heaters being installed incorrectly so I thought I’d share a quick video of how you can safely install an all in one night heater into your van.
Remember the best and safest night heater to install would be a floor mounted heater, but don't worry if you have already purchased an all in one Chinese diesel night heater then we will show you in this video how to install it correctly and safely.
We can't stress enough that Chinese diesel night heaters are very safe as long as they're installed correctly, however if they are not they are very VERY dangerous! Carbon monoxide fumes are lethal and WILL kill you if you are confined to a small space with a heater leaking exhaust fumes.

Yes, I agree with the issue of the exhaust leaking where the pipe fits to the unit. I installed the all in one in my home on brackets on an outside wall and after running for an hour my smoke/co alarm went off but only 3 beeps and then stopped. I have a professional CO detector as I work in HVAC and it showed zero. Perplexed, I went outside, stuffed a rag into the intake pipe and then blew into the exhaust pipe with a dewalt inflator/blower. I then went back inside and found it was leaking around the exhaust pipe where it slides onto the unit. It wasn't much but it was a leak nonetheless. I then disassembled the pipe and put high temp exhaust silicone in the pipe and on the nipple, assembled it, waited 24 hours and then tightened the clamp. No more issues. Be careful. When an appliance is burning properly, it will not give off CO but the exhaust it emits is still bad for you!

Inside, all these Chinese diesel heaters are the same. Just remove the casing. I've had a similar heater in the van for 2 years and I'm still alive😀 I sealed the exhaust with chimney paste and wrapped it with exhaust manifold bandage. Smoke and carbon dioxide detectors are tested regularly.
Don't scare people that this device is dangerous. Even a pack of matches in the hands of a fool can be dangerous...
So you have proved my point, you have had to go to all the effort to make it safer, when you could have used a floor mounted heater and it would have been safe from the get go.

To anyone reading this, I bought an all in one diesel heater. Out the box it was a fire hazard not due to design, but quality control. You must check the tightness of all the fuel line jubilee clips. Mine leaked when hot and dripped onto the exhaust pipe where it joins the heater. It only happened when hot so not immediately obvious. You must check all the connections.
Otherwise a good cheap heater.
Thanks for pointing this out, its always good to check it over but there will be people who wouldn't, good advice.
Also, while in transit, diesel can splash and leak out though a small vent hole in the cap.
@@superdavedfw there should be a one way valve on the screw cap. It's a little top-hat thing. Mine found its way into the tank fairly quickly, obviously it dropped off, so mine does the same thing. Ho hum..

I would add, it doesn't matter what kind of heater you buy, you need to check all connections no matter what.

Exactly the reason I made the video.
People can disagree till they’re blue in the face, the fact is this unit is more dangerous than the standard kind.
Wether that’s such a small decrease im safety or not is up to how much you trust that exhaust vent.
For me I’d rather be safe than sorry.
@@simplycampervanconversions I also use a little high temp at silicone on the smooth 1" pipe nipples coming out the bottom. And then silicone in around the steel mount plate since most VAN floors r not flat (4 strength). This insures one is not getting exhaust fumes back inside. They r separated combustion air streams from the warm air inside the van so at most if ur exhaust and intake were recirculating it would just reburn exhaust gases. Way safer that any electric or propane heat source inside the truck. By far. Plus no moisture from burning lp gas.
Thanks for the heads up. I like the other one just because the the fuel tank is further away and it's larger. Now all I need to know is the difference between 5kw and 8kw, they appear to have the same heat output.
There is absolutely no difference what so ever! Same heater, most companies call them 5 to 8kw.

i run it circa 2 years in my garage and it is fXXXXX fantastic. i do not use filter, run it on any diesel which i can find cheap, also kerosine. Have 2 exaust mufflers on the end and one on intake to keep it quiet and it works for me fine, i live in norwey and it warms up my garage fast ( 10-15 outside to 10-15 inside in ca 2 hours). only issue is to have good 12v battery but i use 2 batteries from scrap chose i charge one by one. This type of heating is much more better than the gas because it do not generate fusse or anny hummid inside...you have just pure fresh dry hot air...amazing
I bought an all in one heater for my motorhome, after looking at it when I was going to install it, I done the same as you, I stripped it all down bought a turret and am gonna install it properly 👍🏼
Good video, and agree 100%, only thing to add (if you said it and I missed it, I apologise) paint the exposed metal parts of chassis first to seal to prevent corrosion, then drop heater in.

Your spot on with this ,I've been stressing this point for a while ,one other thing is make sure the black gaskets are OK after time they go brittle and could leak ,there's a fuel pipe inlet type near the fins and the base gasket both provide safety 👍👍
Good video boss 👍 I bought one for tent heating. Leave the unit outside and use the hot air duct inside. But I paid $250 cad for mine, saving over 1k cad... and guess what because i saved so much.. of course I'm going to double check it... many don't understand that they may get lucky.. but you give up QC with chicom stuff.
I got that model, reason, one handle, the only thing I done was put a fuel filter on, and put 2 bits of 2b2 on legs to make it higher

Thank you for this video. Ive just bought the all in one heater before I saw this. It’s now not going in my van . It didn’t occur to me about exhaust escape at that point of the unit.
one of the problems is the Exhaust tubing the heater comes with doesnt fit properly .First thing i did was to buy and upgraded hose that fits snuggly and then for safety measures I secure the tubing with a hose clamp.
This is a good video about safety, you can't knock the guy for that. I would suggest that any and all vans should have a combo smoke & carbon monoxide detector fitted. Only $40 down here in the lucky country. 🙂

Thanks for the advice, I'm repairing a trailer tent and wanted one of these, i'm not going to do the same, it's going in the front locker box and I will disassemble and install correctly.
If it’s going in the front locker and not in the living area then that’s ok as any leaking gases won’t be inside.

I used 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 " conduit ends withe them threaded into the floor sticking up about 1" and filled with high temp silicone the red stuff good to 600°f after putting my exhaust pipe and intake thru. This insures no ⛽s r pulled back in.

It can too heat that stuff up. Those plates get real hot. I put a piece of 1/4 inch thick cement board under mine. Once you glue it in, what if you have to take it back out for cleaning? They also don't quite make those plates big enough to seal good either, so I made my own, out of 1/8 inch aluminum. Also the hole for the wire is sharp, so I notched out the floor, and ran it under the cement board.
To take it out for cleaning you just unbolt from the bottom and lift it off the plate.
Sounds like a good set up though.

A diesel heater is a must have just get a floor mounted one as it’s safer.
Always always always run a fuel filter on any diesel heater. The planer brand is better and has a better Exhaust that won't leak like the cheaper ones do. An old sailer told me that's how most people burn up is with no filter. It gets caked up and then let's loose letting to much fuel and boom big fire. Filter filter filter.....

It’s not difficult to seal the exhaust and also fit a CO monitor.
There is a lesser fire risk with an all in one heated. The steel case won’t absorb the fuel and allow it to burn.
A unit mounted to the wooden floor could be sat directly on a floor soaked in diesel or kerosene.
So I don’t agree it’s more dangerous.
Why would the floor be soaked in diesel when the diesel entry point would be below the floor?

I don't understand why the people they try to do things with this heater I had 3 vans and I never Cheng any thing I just instal the heater as is and I never had problem at all why every body make him self expert you don't need to do any thing just install the heater as is ..Only one thins I did wrong is put the air intake (inside ) the van .i had the intake inside the van luckily I was awake and suddenly I see black smoke inside the van .it was windy day the wind reverse the flow of the exhaust the opposite way and the carbon com out from the intake inside the van .i could be in hell by now if I was sleeping . when you install the heater the intake and the exhaust pipes should lead to the out side as the instructed . your live depend on that .do that and don't try the short cut . you live depend on it. And don't try to be expert install the heater as is my heater (Happy buy) in in my van now 3 years i never clean it or did any maintenance to it only before i shut it out i move the temperature to 3 to 5 degree higher. for 3 to 4 minutes to work harder and clean the chamber . do that and your heater work perfect for long time.
question for you iv just bought a diesel heater and everything has been done by the book its not in a van its to heat or should i say keep the heat up round my koi pond shed and its giving me a bad head will it be a leak from exhourst thats giving me a bad head ? regards derrick

Hey, I use a diesel heater at home but not this one. The 8kw version i have and its working great. It heats my home so fast, you dont wanne now. Just be aware that you make attention at the smallest details from the heater. Screws,pump,heatsink,ventilator,.... Also they dont have any securty features ass CO leveling measure at the outlet and a oxigen sensor foor the chambre that you are heating.
So be aware when you are using it that you are there in full awarness.
This thing industrial or military cost about 5000 euro.

Get a really cheap all in one Chinese diesel heater, pull it apart, bye a load more non essential bits put it all back together again take credit for your self when you can just get the kit separately? 🤣🤣
It literally says in the video “the best thing to do would be buy the correct heater in the first place, however if you’ve already got this heater this is a safe way to install it” 🤦♂️

Extending the wiring harness is it just a case of acting the appropriate amount of wire and soldering. Or does it effect the electronics if cut and joined
All you need to remember is the longer the wire the more voltage drop you will get so would need to use the correct wire for the job.
As long as you have a good connection it’s fine, just think every plug socket in your house is basically a break in a huge circuit.
As long as they’re well contacted together it’s fine.

any one with common sense would apply fire cement or exhaust sealer to the outlet, if this was fitted in an area where you are sleeping it should be fitted with a co detector that can switch off the power if activated!

There is yes, I would always use a turret plate for this reason.
Not only does it create a better seal for the gasses, but also keeps your hot exhaust away from your flooring materials.

@@brendandoolan7838 it would be very hard pushed, I’d say never say never but when you think the connections are plastic and don’t melt and insulation is fire resistant and is designed to hold heat.

I have had mine in my van for 2 yrs and have had no problem. It was fitted and tested professionally so your advice is not correct
My advice is this way leaves an exhaust seal inside your van which is less safe than if it’s outside.

FYI diesel fumes are not lethal. And one of those on the bottom are for air intake and needs to be ran a little bit farther then the exhaust
Just last year two men died on a boat in York when the poorly installed night heater leaked carbon monoxide into the habitation area.

diesel fumes are lethal as are any other oil or gas,coal,wood paper etc etc if it combusts then if used incorrectly it will probably leak out carbon monoxide and cause health issues which may be fatal

Weird. I have a diesel heater like this for three years and it works six months out of a year in my motorhome and a friend of mine has also had it for six years. Never any problem. Those who made those so-called improvements themselves always have problems. The same for those who have used different fuels such as waste oil. Always problems. Do you really think you know better than the manufacturer itself? Then dream on calmly.
If you think that not having an exhaust clamp inside your van doesn’t make it safer than having an exhaust clamp in your van then I think it is you that is dreaming.
Another one who cannot control the sound volume.
Or just buy the other heater for an extra £10, and save yourself the headache of buying the extra stuff needed for this install.

Yes but it would still ideally need removing from the outer casing as that would be a big lump under your van.
Think these are for a workshop or garage.

Why would you fit one of these types of heaters in a van anyway. Fueling could be an issue apart from the tank really being to small which means constant filling. These units are best fitted out a work shop or even your house, or just don't waste your money on this style of unit for your van.

The heater you are using is designed to be installed outside and you use ducting to allow the hot air into your vehicle !

The whole point of the video is to show people who already have one if they can make it safer, I also explain that while an all in one can be safe, the fact there is an exhaust outlet inside the van it is not as safe.
If a standard heater leaks it leaks outside if an all in one leaks it leaks inside.
There is no argument it’s not as safe.

The whole unit will be built like crap, if they can't even spec the fuel line properly.....
...spend the extra and buy a Webasto and save all the cost of upgrading parts, building parts and labour costs, doesn't make sense to me?
I repair and replace as many webasto and erberspacher heaters as I do Chinese ones.
The only difference is the parts are more expensive.
You can replace a Chinese heater cheaper than you can fix a webasto or erberspacher.
The main thing that goes on a Chinese heater is the temp sensor and cost about £5 to fix it and takes about 10 minutes.
It’s a no brainer to buy Chinese you can have 7 for the price of one.
