    I used fire cement around the connection where the exhaust pipe fits on to the exhaust stem coming out of the heater. (It minimizes the risk of exhaust seeping into the van) I also discarded the jubilee clips that come with these heaters in favor of heavier clips, (or better still industrial hose clamps) Good advice about not sleeping while the heater is running, unless the van is well ventilated.

      And it will use up all the oxygen in the van cause a negative pressure inside and pull fumes in from under the van thru the rear vents so yes it's very dangerous not to have an external air intake.

    • @flybobbie1449
      @flybobbie1449 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also with the exhaust be careful where the foul air vents exit at the rear of vehicles.

    • @lenward474
      @lenward474 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No. The whole point is efficiency by recycling the inside air. The burning sir and exhaust are outside. Vacuum lock inside a van...not possible...it's a van. Way too many installs done using recycling air....everybody panics and doesn't do research. Carbon monoxide detectors are used everywhere.

    That type of heater would also be great for heating up tents, all four tents if the ducting was long enough to go to each tent. The heater could be left outside with an umbrella/cover above it and a power Oak to power it up. It's Good heater with many uses that's for sure. 👍👍👍

    I would go with the Fireangel combined smoke and CO detector with the lithium 10 year battery inside. That's what I bought.
    Also the garage that installed my diesel heater fitted a rubber bush which has got rid of that ticking from the dosing pump and my pump is mounted underneath the chassis.

  • @captaincoxyboy
    @captaincoxyboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Respect most of your work Mel but this instal is not safe. Even with the Co alarm, the air intake must be outside the vehicle, occasionally these heaters can backfire, the air intake and the exhaust share the same internal space in the burn chamber, this could result In the heater pumping exhaust gases directly into the sleeping area, Even if the alarm does goes off the occupant could become very sick quickly. The heater in your own van is far more suitable for this application. ( you didn’t show exactly what you did with the air intake but mentioned it in the first half of the vid, so I assume it inside the van)

      The combustion air should come from outside. The circulating air intake is inside. Just the way it was designed to be installed.
      This also has to do with not creating a negative air pressure in the conditioned space, pulling in drafts and fumes
      Why cut corners when peoples lives are involved?

    I bought the one with a separate tank. The exhaust and clips just don't make a good seal so I really wouldn't want an exhaust join inside the van. Also I bought 2 carbon monoxide alarms - one for where the heater is and one for the main part of the van. Does make it feel safer.

Both gasses can kill you, but CO only needs a few parts per million whilst CO2 needs to displace all of the oxygen present, so pretty unlikely in a van for CO2. Great vid as always 👍

    Please follow manufacturer's instructions for where to install CO detector. Rlize that they assume it is installed in a house, not van.

  • @onemanandhisdog9
    @onemanandhisdog9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not only is the air intake wrong, the carbon monoxide detector is not ideal - "Because carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air and also because it may be found with warm, rising air, detectors should be placed on a wall about 5 feet above the floor. The detector may be placed on the ceiling. Do not place the detector right next to or over a fireplace or flame-producing appliance." from epa.gov.

    Surely aluminium is a super conductor, wouldn't some heat resistant material be better? Don't you need external fresh air into the heater so it doesn't use your oxygen in the space, just thinking when I did boiler controls, the boiler rooms had to have fresh air fans into the boiler room

    • @BigVanSmallWorld

      Your absolutely rite that’s why most vanlife people have the windows open at night to make sure they have good ventilation in my van I sleep with front windows open an inch with wind deflectors and my ceiling fan is permanently vented even when closed 👍

      And if you fit an awning later the fumes will stink the van out if the door iis open. I always fit the exhaust on drivers side. We get many wet and chilly days that need some heat but still like to cook outside on a campsite.

    You add a carbon monoxide alarm to a safe install to keep you safe.
    You don't rely on a CO alarm with an unsafe install. These all in one heaters are not to be used in a van, especially if sleeping in it.

I urge you to reconsider this install, potentially people without knowledge are literally going to copy you, 1000’s maybe, how would you feel being responsible for a subscribers death, I’m sorry if you think I’m trolling you but this one is very serious.
      You own vans diesel heater is fitted incorrectly, even against the instructions but this isn’t even your van, are you really going to take a chance that it might be ok

    The whole reason for fitting a heater is to use it while you are in bed. The coldest hour is the hour before dawn etc.
    I can reach my heater controls from my bed and the pump, air intake and exhaust are all underneath the van floor. The diesel comes from the van diesel tank and i have a Carbon Monoxide alarm. I am sure that is the safest way to fit it.
    I love all your videos Mel but you must rethink this one. Best wishes......

    It is absolutely no use placing it next to the unit . Brill video thpigh
