Arguello was in talks to fight Costello for 140 pound title before Costello was upset by Lonnie Smith. If Arguello had gotten the shot before Smith and win like this,he would have become first 4 division champion in boxing history. Timing is everything. Arguello classy with Costello in post fight interview as always, a great inside and outside the ring.
Nope arguello challenged Pryor and got cheated from winning the 4th division title. He is the unofficial first 4 division champ. Panama and pryor can go shove it
Arguello had the chance to fight Saul Mamby and Bruce Curry who champions at Jr welterweight around the time Pryor was the WBA champion. Arguello wanted to fight Pryor cause he was the best in the division and a fight with him paid the most. Had he fought any of the other champions, he would have been the first 4 division champion. He was cheated against Pryor.

@@デューク西郷-r5nI don’t think Duran ever fought super featherweight and if he did it was very early in his career so he cannot be possibly considered greater than Argüello at that weight
Most lists I've seen have Arguello outside the top five featherweights of all time. I don't necessarily agree with that. Most lists do have Arguello as #1 or #2 all time among junior lightweights.

Despite Gil Clancy's criticism I thought Costello fought the right fight. Move, make Arguello use his legs and mix it up to the head and body. The way past his prime Arguello was easy to hit and out speed. Arguello had that right hand which was the obvious difference.
And still he had one more ill-advised comeback in his 40's (a decision win over an absolute nobody and finally a decision loss over a slightly better opponent).
I remember this fight on television. arguello had retired and moved back to Nicaragua. the sandanistas who took over by war [funded by the USSR via Cuba.}took all of his money. he had to come back to make money.
2 things.. Notice the trainer for Costello tells Mills Lane "thank you" after stopping the fight.. and Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy were the best at calling at fight 🥊
I loved AA! I was enraged when I found out Pryor got juiced up on coke mixed in a bottle by Panama Lewis every time he started looking fatigued in that first fight and Pryor's superhuman punch output in the final 14th round came straight from the Columbian jungle, through Miami right out to Vegas. Don't let the revisionists fool you with claims it was peppermint schnapps or antihistamines mixed with water in the bottle. Pryor was a cokehead through and through and snorted and freebased himself right out of boxing losing his title without ever losing it in the ring. The first fight ruined Alexis...killed his confidence. Here you see the last of his greatness on display but Pryor, Lewis and Pablo Escobar ended Alexis as a dominant force in Pryor-Arguello 1.
God damn Mills Lane gave that guy about 20 seconds on the first knockdown he supposed to go back he start the count at 1:00 it got been laying on the ground on his ass we're about 5 seconds he started the count at 1:00 then when he got up he gave him another 10 seconds they're just ain't no justice in boxing
Classic Arguello right hand. Both fighters were past their primes but Arguello still had that classic straight right.
The always classy Arguello. One of the all-time greats.

Ring magazine, which was still the Bible of boxing at the time, had hyped Costello as the next great fighter.

Alexis Argüello one of the best puncher in the boxing history. He is considered the feather weight of all times, even over Willy Pep and Sandy Sadler.

Alexis spent 3 rounds studying him then moved in, the consummate professional.
Just shows how good Alexis was. 4 time champ if not for Pryor…… with ease

Arguello retired after this fight. He said it was the first fight were he got angry. He didn't like the person he became that night.
IIRC Arguello had a heart condition that led to his first retirement, and influenced his second retirement.
And still he had one more ill-advised comeback in his 40's (a decision win over an absolute nobody and finally a decision loss over a slightly better opponent).
Inigualable Arguello

He also joined the Contras and fought against the Nicaraguan Communist Sandanistas to free his country. Indeed, A great man.
Funded by the states also
