Such a beautiful ringneck ❤ Kudos to this lady for putting in the work, Ringnecks are some of the most phobic and flighty birds and just the fact that it’s trusting enough for Dave and Jamie to train as well as and what she has been able to do with it thus far is amazing! Takes a lot of patience not to give up and it seems like she definitely Knows what she is trying to get to with the bird and no doubt won’t stop until it’s there. Great video!

This video makes me feel pretty good. My first bird and don’t tell my African grey, favorite bird, is an Indian ringneck. I knew what I was getting into when I chose the species, and I already do all of this! I couldn’t ask for a better bird than my Niko.
The key for Niko, really, is clarity. He’s pretty eager to do what I want, it’s a matter of communicating what I want. It’s how I got him to do step up, and shake, without confusing the two commands.

Yeah it's a tricky one, since the one-leg step has been so reinforced as a trick.
I'm currently working with a budgie that basically had the same problem and I just had to stop rewarding the steps altogether. Eventually it got so desperate for the treat it flew to my hand with the treat so I just clicked out of shock because it was something new it hadn't done before. Now it learned that what I want is for it to be on the hand with the treat so I'm working on getting it onto the hand without a treat.
Sometimes it seems like taking tiny baby steps for a long time and then all the sudden it's a sprint to something new, lol.

Oh this ringneck is a breeze compared to the one I got for my mom.. my moms is a huge bird lover and always wanted an Indian ringneck. I had him for about 4 months in hopes to get him hand trained before giving him to her. The people that I bought him from said he was hand raised and I do believe it was a lie. He came to me with completely missing toe nails. He won’t let a SOUL near him and it’s been a year and a half since he’s been in the family. He says a lot of cute words and gets all the fresh food he wants, even though he changes his mind on what he likes each week lol. But regardless of everything, he won’t come near a human. It’s made me an my mom so devastated because he is loved, but no one can touch him.

Your right, the one foot on then back to the perch is now the trick. I’d probably avoid that whole situation.
Find a narrow table to work on and place your arm across the surface with your hand sticking off the other end. FR-0 (luring): Place the treat on your hand or arm where you think the bird will succeed. Slowly move subsequent treats further out. DO NOT lure by drawing the treat away as the bird reaches. FR-1: Eventually replace the treat with target stick and treat on the hand allowing the bird to retreat. Be quick with the treat at first so the bird doesn’t retreat between touch and treat. This avoids training the retreat as part of the trick. Once you are confident, take a little longer to reward. Once confident, reward out of reach, small gentle movement of hand towards treat. Return to baseline and allow bird to retreat. FR-2: second click after longer pause or second click after movement without treat shown. This process works the bird away from the body and should help avoid the shoulder rush. All treats should be at the peak of the behavior you want and therefor not at the table or on the shoulder but where the bird targeted.

I use the open hand, palm up, with my galah when inviting out of the cage. It’s clear to me he sees it as a stable place to be.

What a brilliant video. I’ve been looking for exactly this! I’ve adopted a 3 year old boy from a very poorly lady and he is incredibly hand shy. More so than this lovely boy. He will sit on me but hands are an absolute no no. What an inspiration this lady is!

Nice to see someone struggling with their ringneck.my struggle with mine not such a personal downer. My ringneck is very aggressive and I haven't been able to make any progress with him..Where My greencheek was a piece of cake.
Not sure if this is recommended or would help but, one of my budgies was afraid to get on my finger. I tried an open flat hand and he would hop right up. Slowly I would remove fingers and tip my hand until he realized my finger was safe.
Good for her for not giving up! I rescued an IRN two years ago. He's a total sweetheart and I know that he trusts me, but he's had such severe past trauma involving multiple rehoming experiences that he just can't emotionally cross the barrier to allow any thought of a step-up with my hand, a touch stick, nothing. I've resigned myself to accept the fact that he's unfortunately been scarred for life. 😕
Beautiful boy! My girl(in pic) hates hands. She will step up onto a dowel. I use that for transporting her around the house. Not sure if he would feel more secure with that. She was also clipped. We have about 50 ft long open area, she flies now about 30 ft of that.
This is why I don't like when someone suggests clipping a bird. They just aren't meant to be clipped. Awesome work though, I do hope the bird comes to trust a bit more in the future.
Yes I have difficulty with my ringneck too. But I accept him the way he is. He does take treats from my hand. He does circles on command and does target with stick at times. Will perch on stick but not on hand or arm. At times is he territorial to the cockatiels cage and food. I am always watchful when they are together in room and move the cockatiels when makes his sound of look out. Grinding the pellets with flax seed, I will try.
You probably tried this but since it wasn't in the clip I was wondering if he would step up if he was on the floor?
Basically my birds where traumatized and clipped. They came from someone's backyard fed and watered. Today they live in my living room take peanuts from my hand and that's about it. At least they no longer scream at me every time I walk by.... now they just watch me constantly.
It took me SIX YEARS to get my Ringneck to step up onto my bare skin and stay there for a treat. I got him as a baby and started training him right away. Never give up! 🐦🫶🏻

Ringnecks arw extremely smart birds. Birds never forget the trauma they went threw but they need to know that not all human beings are not horrible and it does take time for them to build their trust and just being patient with them. Just keep working on the trust to build so they can see that you are not a threat to them.
My rescue flighted budgie found in a neighbors yard was given to me 5 months ago. He refuses to step up or get near my skin, won’t touch me anywhere he’s free to go out in and out of his cage and is out most of the day on his perch. I’m retired home all day with him. He will eat millet sometimes from my fingers but if he accidentally touches me or gets too close he flies off. I’ve been able to hand tame every budgie I’ve had who wings were clipped once until they grew out. All bonded with me except my rescue now who won’t touch me or Target. I called the Magnolia bird farm here in CA family owned business and breeders over 50 years. They are very conservative with wing clips every budgie I’ve ever had was purchased from them. They are trustworthy and highly reputable, I told them about cloud my rescue budgie they think I should bring him in for a wing clip that they believe will help the taming process, this would be a one time clip. I haven’t decided yet as I don’t know how I would even get him in the travel cage to get there.

Fun facts about ringnecks in India! The ancient Hindu monks would chant the same prayers and the wild ringnecks would repeat them. They thought the birds were sacred because of this. Also it's illegal to keep ringnecks in a cage in India as they are wildlife.

thank you this video is very informative it has the tips I need to start with my blue ringneck parrot - he's one legged and a persistant hard headed parrot - and I am working on buiding trust with him. I have an older pet cat.. this is my 3rd week with Onyx - the parrot. he comes out of the cage for most of the day, he's left to roam around the room after the morning shower. Today I gave him his shower inside his cage out in the balcony - sprayed him all over with water, and left him to enjoy drying the sun for an hour. then I took him in his cage back to his corner in the room - he seems angry - but silent, he's gazing at me! how can I bring him to trust me? what things I should avoid? please share more tips on taming those lovely pets
Mine flew to my shoulder and stepped up anywhere first day. But first thing I did when I got him for the hour drive home is put him on my chest and cupped my hand on him. Yea he bit the hell out of me for 5 mins but I just talked nice and took the bites after he claimed down he’s been tame ever since
So I have a Goffin's cockatoo and she was afraid of the hand so I presented the shoulder facing away from her and that started the trust build to get to the hand.

I wanted to have an IRN for my beginner bird but then realised just how much more skittish, attention-demanding & and time-consuming they are compared to other breeds lol
I would also really enjoy seeing more vids with very beginner birds, like cockatiels, love birds, parrotlets, ect. :)

Can you please advise me how to socialise with the ring neck parrots, i bought them from an aviary. They are 2 years old. They are scared. It bothers me. They eat only apples and sun flower seed.
I currently have a girl named Kiwi 8 months green female I am rescuing another female molly who is 4 years old a blue Ringneck parrot I already know to keep them in separate cages I’m already giving Kiwi a diet of nuts and vegetables is there pellets as-well I can give them or am I feeding her the correct food or am I missing something I also let my birds fly I don’t clip their wings 😁

There hasn't been a lot of research on parrots specifically here, but their sense of smell is likely a lot worse than our own based on comparisons with passerines (since their diets are somewhat similar).

Everything a bird eats in nuts and fruit/veggies. I was thinking when in a whole state like nuts not open. Has every little smell. As the outside of the nut is not the same as the insides. As for BT food ready-to-eat packs. Everything inside is not in a whole visual state. It’s cut up. So that can play on birds visual that eatable thing.
I May be way off but what if you started with your hand gripping the perch and targeted him to walk across the knuckles to the other side? Maybe even with a thin glove on? Just to have him on the hand when the hand can’t move at all? Just brainstorming….
My ringneck scream continuously, dont know what to do he has everyting that is needed...i know caged bird can not be happy but i will expect some me time when i will do my work, he scream squack so loudly, i ignore the behavior so many times but didnt worked he scream even more louder then i end up going to him...i keep him outside mostly but the movement i keep him in the cage he starts screaming i even keep him in my porch to get some fresh air in the decently big cage that he even scream in that...now while im writing this he is screaming i then sometime think of letting him go he is extreamly playfull but sometimes he annoy me to the level that makes me think of leaving him...he is with me for 3 years now is he become quiter as he age? please let me know give some suggestions...

I have my ring neck for about 8 months now and he still doesnt let anyone go near him. I moved him into my room so that he can have a calmer environment but i still cant give him treats or touch him. I tried everything can anyone give me more tips? He has a big cage with toys and the door (of the cage) is always open and he is comfortable getting out and every time he sees me putting food in his food bowl he goes in to the cage to eat plus he is always singing and looks comfortable but he doesnt let me have a relationship with him
Here's what I would do. I'd completely start over. Close his door for a couple of days. Don't try to handle him or put your hand in the cage right now. You want him to feel safe in his own space. Instead just hang out beside his cage. Do something quiet, but don't force him to pay attention to you. If he's calm, talk to him gently. Whatever you do, keep things calm try not to scare him. Do this for a couple of days. You want him to see that you aren't scary. After a couple of days, you can start to offer treats through the cage. Let him come for the treat, but don't force or rush him. Once he's good with that, open the door and put your hand just inside the cage when you offer a treat. Let him come get it. If he freaks out, take your hand away and try again later. Take your hand away when he takes it. The next time move your hand a little bit closer. Eventually you'll be able to have your hand right next to him. Then you can work on stepping up. It's a slower method than targeting, but I find it very helpful especially with nervous birds. You just need to be patient.

Back up a second folks! Balance is OFF! The worst was @07:45 but other times showed up too.
That 🐦 has BALANCE PROBLEMS! I saw his imbalance 3 times in just a few minutes! Very subtlety @04:54 more so @05:30 & big time @05:32 See? While they were talking & not watching the bird, he nearly fell off the perch.
I think he’s got major balance issues & fearful of falling. Maybe he fell with his last home & now in trying to compensate, he is losing balance even more. He wants to work he’s just got equilibrium challenges.
In humans it’s Middle Ear, I’m not sure what neurological structures include balance in birds? But for sure, if they watched, balance is critical for this critter.
This is like my female IRN nothing then step on my hand to take treat then immediately turn back to stand or cage nothing more whatever you do and if you stop work eith her for a day she will stop even put her leg on my hand

Why do you continue to treat the one step. He's getting treated for the one step so there is no motivation to step up. I would move fingers closer and when he steps up have your finger touch his other foot and then treat. Try that maybe?
I had a female that was so loud my husband couldn’t stand her. She was a rescue that was abused. My neighbor lived her but then returned to England and left her with her ex. I had no idea until he told me she flew away. I wanted to kill him.
He let her fly away on purpose. I woukr divorce him if ny husband pulled that crap
What an awesome lady and bird. This bird is so lucky he ended up with her and that she has such patience and willing to take the time to help this bird overcome these issues. Can't wait for the update ! 🤍💙
