Bird tip!!! Install a perch OUTSIDE of the birds cage in a place where they can easily get to it, this way they can be outside and still be on their cage. I did this to my bird and he loves it

My budgie had a mirror perch on the outside of his cage. He loved his mirror, and I didn’t keep it in his cage so he had more of an incentive to come out. He would go back to his perch to chill instead of going back in his cage all the time 🥰

I have a Quaker parakeet. He was terrified of being out when we bought him and he showed some cage territorial behavior as is common in Quakers especially! We decided to leave his cage door open for most of the day as I did stuff around the apartment. I was pretending not to watch him lol. He did eventually like coming out but his body language showed that even having his door open all day was a lot for him to handle. When he was too anxious to be on top of his cage and too anxious to have the door open, I would lay on the couch next to his cage. I knew we had to bond and that was important to really tackle his cage territorial behavior. Once I began to see that me being next to his cage was no longer creating anxiety, I would put my toe on the base so he could see it. I would just leave it there a few minutes at a time gradually increasing in time. I wanted to put more of my foot on the bottom bars but every time I tried, he would become anxious. Do I made a game out of it. He is not prone to biting and he is terrified of the floor so I realized that I would never have to deal with him chasing my feet. I painted my toe nails a bright bright red to attract his attention. He came down to check out my toes as I know he likes bright colors. We made a game out of him coming to see my toe polish. He was so excited to play and Chase that he didn't notice as I touched his cage more and for longer. We also bonded during this time. Now I could probably do whatever to his cage and he's not territorial with me lol. I know it seems unconventional to make a game out of it but I paid close attention to his body language and he wanted to bond and needed to trust. He was just really nervous about it! Also, it took 6ish months to get him to where he liked being out and was not nervous! We did get him a rope perch that we screwed on the outside of the cage because stands are terrifying!

It's one thing for a youtuber to talk about taming and training birds while using a bird that is already fairly tame and trained as an example, it's another to see a direct example of what an experienced bird person can do with a bird that is not bonded, super tamed or super trained with them, this is by far my favorite type of bird content to watch because it is so helpful both with my own birds and with me preparing to adopt another bird!

I had a ringneck that came from a somewhat abusive situation and he hated me. I also have another ringneck that loves me to bits that I have had since he was a baby. I always kept his cage open and did exactly what you just said in this video. He warmed up to me but not to the point where he wanted to hop up, but I still always kept his cage open for him to do what he wanted. He would mainly stay in his cage and come out every so often, but he always had the choice. He eventually started taking food from my hand, but still would not hop up....all this was over a 2yr time span. He lives with my sister now and he has completely changed! He comes out on his own everyday and flies to my sister to hang out with her. I think he just didn't like me or felt competition from my other ringneck since they are both males...idk. he is so much happier where he is with my sister, so that makes me happy.

I have to disagree with "bird doesn't want to be in the cage"
The cage is a safe zone for a bird that should be fun with food and toys too. It should also be a nice big size. they don't want to be locked in it 24/7 of course. It's like humans and their bedrooms. It's their personal safe area.
I work at an avian focused store and we have an elderly Amazon that was stand trained and has been on a stand instead of a cage for at least several years now. In the past few months he has been going into empty cages and closing the door and just chilling there. so now at night we put him in one of the cages and take him back out in the morning. He still goes back to the cage for the most part throughout the day.
My eclectus is also free to go in and out of his cage as he pleases throughout the day and usually he hangs around me but sometimes he will just go back into his cage and nap or play with the toys in there.

    • @lilyliu8035
      @lilyliu8035 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Thanks Sootlet. I feel better after hearing your experiences. I think older birds may sometimes enjoy going back to the cage to rest up.
I have been thinking about "engaged not caged". My 2 older budgies love staying in or around the cage. It's also safer for them that way instead of wandering around the house. With the slogan, I was wondering if I needed to work on helping them come out more and enjoy more around the house. Now I think it's good for me to leave the cage door open so they are free to do what they want.
I'll keep monitoring their moods and try to give them the best I can :D

Hi, Marlene! I always learn a TON from your videos. I have considered a bird for years now (literally!) and decided a long time ago that I would never intentionally GET a bird because I know myself and my schedule, but if a bird "happened", I would take it on, adjust and commit (like I would never intentionally have a child, but if a child happened to me that would be a different situation). I've had a couple of near misses with birds happening; once with a conure and once with a macaw. In both situations I didn't need to take the bird because an experienced bird person was available. I LOVE them SOOOO much it's not even funny. I don't work for a shelter or anything, I just am a total animal person and have friends who are, too. Because of your videos, I would feel confident to deal with a bird in an emergency situation, to take a bird for a friend in need, or to take one on as a permanent companion if the situation arose. Thank you for all you do!

As a bird owner since 2008, I could've learned something new everyday listening in to your vids....never too late! Thank you & a big kudos to you and your loved ones! We'd read Bird magazines that simply stated a bird was normally attracted to one in the household and this very limited way of thinking has never been the upliftment I've yearned for as a bird owner whom has had to accept our bird(s) were only inclined to accept one of us. As the one who does all the work of feeding and clean up, Joe has only had to show up and be the one our bird would look forward to daily head rubs. Taking one day at a time or one vid at a time, I am finding I can make a world of difference in our bird taking a liking to the both of us! First there was Fathead and now there is RodneyBird. Changing the way we handle our bird(s) :) thank you mucho!

Isis is so cute!! How did I tame my bird? By watching your videos!!! I don't watch any other youtube channel where they give advice about birds. You're the only one I trust! I do, however watch channels where you can see the birds engaging, having fun and talking. But, of course no other channel can compare to yours!! Thanks for all your videos. I, and many other people, wouldn't have been able to tame and engage with our birds without your help.

I have a pair of budgies, they aren't really into physical affection, but they definitely love me, they give me flock calls, they like to watch whatever I'm doing, and when one had a broken blood feather (it wasn't a bad one and he's fine!) the whole ride to get him checked out he insisted on being able to see me and calmed down because I talked to him. Not all birds show affection by cuddling, some just want you around.

I proud to own a blue male Ringneck; he's 13, someone gave him to my son a year ago. My son gave me the bird a week ago. Ger-man is aggressive and territorial about his cage. He's aggressive; the previous owner did not spend a lot of time with Ger-man so he's non-trusting. However, I've been working with him. He speaks that's the best part, he fights that's the worst part...lol..I'll survive.

Marlene you are so good at making videos that are indeed entertaining. I will frequently watch your videos when I don't feel like watching anything else! They are upbeat, fun, educational, cute, and calming too. You are so even-keeled and such a good teacher. The best-made animal vlog of any I've seen (I watch other vlogs with birds, cats, big cats and goats. :-)
Vinnie is a nutty little dudinsky! Jersey needs her solid sleep to be fully be the diva that she is. They're all cute and special. George is the perfect bird parter and teammate. Yeah while you were in there with Isis, the whole menagerie was making a racket downstairs, sounded like an African jungle! I'm a little older so the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear the name Isis is the Greek goddess, and the terrorist thing only hits my brain afterwards. It's a beautiful name. When you turn Isis into a sweetiepie, it will be another win against terrorism !
As always you do such a great job - thank you - we all love you!!!!!!!!

Marlene I watch all your videos, and this one was incredibly helpful for me. I have a parrotlet who is very timid. He's definitely more willing to interact with me away from his cage, so I'm going to work harder on creating playstands and safe areas for him in every room, to give us more options and help him gain confidence out of the cage. Thank you!

My bird had never been handled before. The first week i kept him in the cage and let him get used to his surroundings, the second week I had the vet I worked for clip him. From then on I have his cage open so he can choose to come out or not. He learned how to step up to a perch quickly and it made it easy to transport him. Today after watching this video, I got him to step up on my finger for the first time after he was being extra moody with me this morning. So thank you. This really helped me out a lot. I feel like my bird and I are both making progress getting to understand one another. (I've only had him maybe a month)

Another really helpful lesson about interacting with our birds, Marlene. Thanks so much. I wish I'd learned some of these things years ago when I had my Lovebird. He wasn't caged, but could've had a much better life if I had known more about parrots. I hope anyone considering a bird pet will discover your vlogs. Even though I'm too old for a long relationship with another bird, I may volunteer at a rescue or sanctuary and I'll encourage everyone to tune in! namaste

Thank you! So many websites tell you not to handle your bird for the first few days when you bring it home, which always seemed crazy to me. I'm glad to hear a different perspective. I'm going to be bringing home my conure baby in about 3 weeks when she's weaned. I have been regularly visiting her, so hopefully when I get her home she will remember me, but this is really great info!

Great video!! Both because you were teaching and explaining, as well as showing how to include birds in daily life. I made my mom listen to the part about it being not acceptable to have the bird in the cage all the time. And that weather you have a good relationship with the bird or not you can still let it out of the cage to sit on top of its cage or on a stand in the same room with you.

  • @Tomali480

Love love love this video! I did the stick method and he was afraid of it. My bird has not been taught to step up but he will walk out of his cage on his own. I need to get some stands. I think that will be more enjoyable for him. It seems they’re $500+ everywhere so I waited. I don’t know where to go get a nice one

I’m so excited for this series on your channel. I’m a newer sniffer with 3 timid cockatiels and it’s been harder than I imagined to find resources on how to bond and handle them at this stage. I found that I’ve already started doing a lot of things you mentioned here but I need to get better about removing the cage from the equation once they’re out. Thank you for all you do Marlene, it’s made me so much more confident in being a bird mom. ❤️
