Evangelion isn't like normal animes, that's what I like about it, sure the rebuilds are complete shit, but when it comes to talking about the original show and End Of Evangelion, it tackles a real like problem, and that's escapism. That's why the show has a dark tone at some times, it's trying to explain to us, in order to feel happiness or love, you must give it to yourself first, but Shinji's depressed ass is an example when you don't do that exact thing. Dude thinks he can only get love and support from people, like Rei, but nah, he needs to learn to give it to himself first, and when Evangelion ended on its last episode, Shinji learned to let go of his past, accept what's going on now in his life, and, he learned to love himself.

That's why the show has a dark tone at some times, it's trying to explain to us, in order to feel happiness or love, you must give it to yourself first, but Shinji's depressed ass is an example when you don't do that exact thing. Dude thinks he can only get love and support from people, like Rei, but nah, he needs to learn to give it to himself first, and when Evangelion ended on its last episode, Shinji learned to let go of his past, accept what's going on now in his life, and, he learned to love himself.
