He was 65 years old here. Noone in the history of music could do what he could do. A genius.

Once upon a time, a poor blind kid from London, England, grows up to become a virtuoso pianist. At the age of twenty eight he emigrates to the US, and writes a tune which becomes one of the corner stones of Jazz. Sixty years later, he is knighted “Sir George Shearing” by her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. If that’s not a fairy tale! Yet here’s that guy playing some of the most beautiful piano on the net, along side Mr Torme, whose mastery of singing is stupefying and, to my reckoning, unrivaled anywhere. Yet Mel’s modesty leads him to pay homage to similarly incomparable Caterina Valente (directly) and Tony Bennett (by singing Bennett’s beautiful song “How do we say Auf Wiedersehen”). If that’s not amazing enough, there’s Neil Swainson and Donny Osborne, the former showcasing stunning virtuosity, the latter, subtlety and taste. Add to that incredible cohesion and professionalism, supported by as much humor as sheer humanity, so how do we say “Auf Wiedersehen” to this? We don’t!

Замечательно! Спасибо! It's impossible to say auf wiedersehen.

Look at that mouth - how he forms the words, where he places each syllable. Listen to those lyric interpretations; deservinging of an Academy Award. Listen to George - those voicings, the changes (chords). Stupefying!

Mel was at his very best and greatest with George. What a great duet they made. Loved them and still do, perhaps even more now. George, oh how I miss him. He introduced me, in my early teens, to jazz with that great original sound of his in the early ''50's. This is classic combination of piano and voice. Unbeatable. Mel had such incredible vocal control! Wow, listen to him sing Pick yourself up. Of course, don't overlook George. WOW!!!!! Again, what a combo of two true masters at their craft. He scatter,

Circa 1989, I adjusted his microphone at a show in Cambridge Ma. - it had loosened and was bouncing off his nose repeatedly. He commented, "Oh, do you travel"???!!!

As someone has already said,(and it is worth repeating), Mel Torme and George Shearing were a classic combination. Unlike most singers Mel got better with age, and it is always a puzzle to me that he did not get the acclaim he fully deserved. In my book he was superior to Sinatra!

You know I would not have thought it until I started talking about what a master he was. Believe it or not people, OLDER people, like my age, didn’t even who he was! I heard an interview he was on and he said that he knew his voice was an instrument so he treated it as such. He told the interviewer that he neither drank liquor nor smoked.

Much like Tony Bennett and Bill Evans. George and Mel were a magic combo. I had the fortune of seeing them live a couple of times. That was in the 80s. That's a long time ago now. For a newer take on jazz singers and magic combos take a listen to Sarah Gazarek w Josh Nelson-you will find various live performances by her here on TH-cam. Very good. And of course Kurt Elling.

I saw his outstanding performance at Ralph Gleason´s Jazz casual 25 years earlier (thanx to you tube of course, in 64 I was only 9 years old and had no idea of jazz at all!) and watching this glamorous presentation, I am still wondering as neurologist how aging decline keeps its hands off his incredible voice!, Sincerely, have no idea on how this guy could sing such harmonically complicated pieces of fine art with such an endless voice , rich of fast and ever changing tones with such great crystalline pureness !!! Thanks George and Mel for being eternally young for future generations!. Also U tube for saving these enchantments!!

These two, along with the sidemen, were just at the apex of the jazz idiom, as far as I"m concerned. Their music was arranged so incredibly tastefully and was just the height of sophistication and class. God! How I love it. Shearing constant quoting classical music in his intros was utterly wonderful.

Quit the phony romantic lying...Mel is great, but neither he - nor anyone else for that matter - is on Ella's level. If Mel were still alive, he'd be the first to tell you so. So you are a liar...one of them IS better than the other! Not really sure if you are conscientiously lying or just plain ignorant of the facts.

It's a great pleasure to watch this concert. Living in Holland i was able to see this concert on German television. I like all the cd's they made together. In 89 and 90 i saw 2 Mel Torme concerts in Amsterdam and 2 in New York (Michaels pub). But my favorite Mel Torme concert is when Mel Torme is the only 'star' on stage ( with the exemption off the great 'lost concert' with Shearing and Gerry Mulligan at CarnegieHall). My favorite Mel Torme pianist is Mike Renzi. It was a great pleasure to see Mike Renzi play piano at the more recent dvd with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga.
