The Painful Truth About Drawing Tablet Reviews: Response

Aaron Rutton posted a great video about some of the hidden parts of reviewing drawing hardware that you guys don't see. I've always been a little hesitant to make a video like that because complaining about not getting hardware from a company for not playing by their rules would seem petty or add a layer of bias to my reviews that I didn't want.

Oh dude I really used to worry about this and just had to bite the bullet and say I've gotta keep it real or not do it at all. I nearly killed my relationship with a supplier after they sent me the worst tablet Id ever come across. The manufacturer wanted me to delete the video and I was cringing when I sent back an email saying ...No - (your audience is smarter than a lot of people think, If you're not honest it's gonna start to show imo)

Just an example: after weeks of search last year (your video in particular), I decided to buy the Huion Kamvas Pro 13 from Amazon. The tablet itself worked pretty well, but after a couple of months the pen decided to stop working properly. After a day spent with the Huion customer service we assumed that the problem concerned the pen itself and they sent to me another one (charging the shipping costs to me, but OK, I need it to work). After a month the other pen followed the same path, so the problem was actually the manufacturing of the pen.
OBV reviewers have a limited amount of time to make their test and those kind of problems come out after months of intense use, so you can actually make a review basically of "first impressions". It's not their fault, of course, and I hope that the fellas who bought the same product do not have the same problems I had with mine.
Long story short: I bought a Cintiq 16 then.

    • @thebradcolbow
      @thebradcolbow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +44

Yeah, that is the one blind spot that I have which is product reliability. Another story I've been keeping my eye on the last few days is the Samsung Galaxy fold phone. Samsung just postponed the launch after a bunch of reviewers had problems with the screen breaking. That's one of those things reviewers don't find but weeks later product owners would definitely find.

Brad,..part of the reason I come back to your channel is because you always seem to be on the level with everything you do and say. You talk in plain English and explain yourself in clear detail. Seasoned artists can follow you without feeling like its too remedial and young artists and creatives can follow you without feeling intimidated or insulted.
    You provide a great balance.
You also seem to come across as unbiased as well. That's HUGE for me. The Apple fanboyism that is so rampant these days is just so tiring and exhausting to watch and listen to and the whole conversation coming from BOTH camps delivers nothing productive for anyone. I know you love most Apple products and employ them in your creative workflow but I honestly believe it's just because you are comfortable with them and they work for you. That is GREAT and that makes sense. There are things I like and dislike about both Apple and WinPCs.
The main plus here though is that you have never appeared to PUSH any device or product on viewers but rather point out their great, good, fair and bad qualities based on YOUR experience. That's all one can ask!
    Thank you!

Now with that said - I tried putting the shoe on the other foot and thought to myself “what would happen if every reviewer was honest about a certain product? Well, after enough blacklisting - their online presence would quickly flatline - why? Nobody’s talking about it anymore!”
So it would seem that there’s a double-edged sword from both ends of the deal - the reviewer and the company.

Yeah, the amazon review thing seems so shady to me! A company asked me for that but I turned them down. (I'm pretty sure that violates Amazon's terms anyway lol) Thanks for the video! I appreciate how transparent you and Aaron are about this topic. :)

Brad, I want to thank you for what you do. I've been following you for just a little while now, but your reviews have helped me narrow down my choices for taking the leap into digital art. At the moment I'm still deciding between two different 15.6 tablets...but that's after weeks of looking over your reviews and a few others in comparison...and of course the cost factor...I'll let you know what I buy by next month!

thanks a lot for all your reviews, I ended up buying my current tablet after checking your review of Hypothetical brand A's 12" tablet, seeing as it was almost identical to Hypothetical brand B's 12" tablet available here in China (same design, same pen, same drivers...). I'm having a great time using it! Keep it up, compared to most other drawing tablet reviews on youtube, yours feel honest and also very consistent. You really make it easy to compare one tablet to an other doing similar tests all the time, greatly appreciate that!

Hi Brad! Keep up the good work. I actually think it gives you more credibility to admit that some devices are provided to you by manufacturers, and others you buy yourself. I can appreciate you taking a stand and not caving to manufacturer demands, in spite of the possible consequence of them not providing future products for you to review as a result. The fact that you go out and buy devices with your own cash to review in those instances says a lot about you and your credibility in my opinion.

I trust you and Aaron to give honest reviews. Because of this, I received the Wacom Cintiq 16 for Christmas this year! I had to fight back tears of joy. That being said, I am extremely new to the digital drawing world but I love this thing. I will continue to practice, get discouraged, and try again. Maybe one day I will be sent Wacom products to review!

So, I'm starting a Digital Art degree program and needed a tablet of sorts. After running in circles and trying to sift through all the BS, your channel helped guide me to my purchase. I decided on an XP-Pen Deco Pro. At first I really wanted a screen, but the ones without the screen look to be more reliable and ergonomic. It will also be less resource intensive for my computer, which will hopefully avoid running into choppy frame rates/crashes. I also won't have my hand blocking some of my vision or getting sweaty from the heat, so that is a bonus as well.

You're number one in my reviewers list for drawing tablets atm. Next is Teoh from parkablogs, and Lisa from mobile tech review, and recently Aaron for the wacom stuff. But you're number one since you're carrying the products within my budget range, Lisa is supplementary, and Aaron for more details.
Of all of them, I feel more comfortable with your reviews since you present yourself nicely. It's like listening to a friend.
    I wish you more success!

Thank god your not one of those youtubers who's not afraid. I recently Bought the XP Pen Artist 15.6 Pro base off the glowing reviews it got on youtube but after I had been using with the product for 3 weeks now I was dissapointed by its performance, specially the line quality of it, mind you i come from a wacom Intous Pro 2018 models which also uses the Pro Pen 2, to be fair with XP Pen they where quiet fast at contacting me on what my issue was and i suggested they work on the Drivers on fixing the abrupt pressure spikes when drawing, i dont know when the fix will come but for now I returned it and settled with the Wacom Cintiq 16, its $200 more expensive but it works like the Wacom Intous Pro medium that i have soo i was extremely satisfied.

I'm glad you mentioned Marques Brownlee. I see people say negative things about him all the time, probably just because of the size of his channel now, but you and he have one thing that very few other review channels have, and that's integrity. This video proves it just like his comment that you quoted does as well, but most of us have known it for a long time. That's why we watch you over a lot of the others out there.

I completely agree, i always try to make it known to companies that i will ALWAYS be 100% honest with my experience and my opinions on products. Be that positive or negative. If i don't mention something in a video, it's more than likely because i didn't experience it, or because i'm a scatter brain and forget shit easily. I don't script my videos, it's all off the top of my head and whatever i think comes out with no filter (other than trying not to curse too much for the kiddies lol). Your reviews have been a huge help for me in trying to make my videos better as well! So a huge thank you!

I regret buying the Huion. The tablet draws fine as advertised but their screens are a nightmare to calibrate making them only useful for linework.

Hi Brad I would argue that any self respecting illustrator professional or otherwise would rather take a fellow illustrators opinion on a tablet/drawing device over those larger review outlets that you mentioned, just because they received an early review example. Good as those channels are they are NOT illustrators! Keep up the good work. I will always value your opinion.

Yeah, this problem was very nicely described by Thomas Sanlanderer (reviews of 3D printers) and even better by Angus from Maker's Muse channel - he even made a contract for the manufacturers that they need to agree upfront - to make sure that no similar "misunderstanding" will ever happen. Thanks for the video, btw.

I ultimately don't care too much for reviewers that get review units way ahead of release as I'm wary of the whole flooding of launch day reviews and I prefer to wait for reviews like Brad's. It looks to me, like a far more real of an approach for the consumer that have serious doubts among the sea of tablets currently available. Brad is not afraid to deliver harsh criticism at points that deserve it, as well as give praise where is due. I watched a lot of reviews before buying my current tablet, hours and hours total. There is just way too much stuff in the market right now, which is an awesome problem to have honestly but still overwhelming nonetheless. At the end of the day, this channel allowed me to make a decision 100% clear of doubts of what product I wanted to have, and that to me is worth any wait. Thumbs up Brad, never change.

Some of the best reviews are on Amazon and other sites where buyers can tell everybody about their experiences. If you skim through enough of those, you can get a good overview and know what the real pros and cons are. Real customers because they have nothing to lose from telling the unvarnished truth.
But even brochure level reviews are good to watch to learn about features, etc. To know what the promise is.
Then people like you and Lisa Gade who take journalism seriously are rare, which is why people wind up subscribing to you.
