BNSF added two miles of heavy-duty yard track to our Shelby, MT south yard a few years ago. The entire TLM was pulled by a little CAT D-2. Impressive! There were two guys, "in the hole", placing tie pads, and whatever.
This is amazing! Too bad this wasn't around when the Transcontinental railroad was built. :-) BTW, how many miles of track can this build in an hour - approximately?

The rails are attached to concrete ties which are manufactured with precisely positioned pockets for the rails to sit in. This means the rails are not out of gauge by any amount. The line is precisely placed before the machine comes along, so the positioning of the rails is as accurate as the positioning of the line. Also, if you think any of this is primitive, you must not know much about it.
Rail switches and diamonds are often prefabricated off-site, carried to the site, dropped in place and manually connected to the rails laid by the machines.

No gaps. The rails are anchored every other tie at the mean temperature at that location to control expansion and contraction. There has been seventy to eighty miles or more of track without joints. It also means that the track can't be be disturbed outside of the mean temperature with adjusting for temperature difference or there could be pull-aparts or buckling. This works very well when the ballast section is adequate.

I have a question. How does the seamless rail get to the new right of way, if there isn't a parallel railroad line at the site? You cannot haul rail on a highway truck, unless every joint is welded on site.
+epistte its welded with thermite on sight but hauled on trucks at 50' in length then what you just saw is what happens assuming you watched the full video after that is ballast which is just very big pieces of gravel. the process is different if they are replacing existing railroad sections. hope this helps.

It all depends on the contractor who took the job. Many different companies world wide us many different techniques, so this is in no way how all of american rail is laid. This video is a company advertising its new machine for possible buyers.
That doesnt make sense, does it? The vast majority of train transportation are freight trains. The American economy relies on them because the quantities that are transported by rail can not be transported by truck. Freight trains need - because of the higher weights, the larger locomotive performance and the longer trains - at least the same stable track bed as passenger trains.

Not sure if the natural ground provides much stability for the track. Normally the ties are placed on a ballast that has been levelled and compacted with Wacker plates.

@Harry W. Hill You cant load them on the move. The track layer runs with around 100 meter / hour - that translates to 27 cm per second. The frontend loader cant align his load of sleepers and then throw the sleepers quick enough onto the waggon. One should also remember that the sleepers must be laid down correctly, because otherwise the gantry crane can not deal with them properly..

The DOT 111 train car was deemed unsafe after 10 oil trains derailed though out 2012.
