Never, ever, ever leave your car running while pumping gas. Never leave your keys in your car. Always lock your doors, even if you're only going inside for less than a minute. I once worked at a gas station and had a customer run inside just to prepay with cash. She was not in the store for ten seconds, and in that time before she could turn back to leave, she had her purse, phone, and wallet all stolen. Just like that. It couldn't have been even a minute between her leaving and returning to her car. It happens that fast. We had a regular of ours almost have his truck stolen. If it weren't for the fact that he had his keys on him, they would have. Always, always be cautious. The minor inconvenience is absolutely worth it.
One thing people don't know is that leaving vehicles running while refueling can damage your engine, when the cap is tight, it creates a vacuum as intended. When it's not, there is no vacuum, and can give you a check engine light. If you do it too much, you will destroy your vehicle over time
