Reminds me of my floor screeding days. My back aches just watching it.
Trumpton Boff . Ah the back was fine after this , wait till you see the steels video 🥵😬😳🧱🧱👍🏼
Bit of a tip when laying concrete as you know yourself concrete is the same as plastering or jointing brickwork for that matter it is all about timing the finish so I tamper it, screed excess of as you were doing and don't touch it with a float till water starts evaporating of the top as the action of tampering causes water to rise to the top (capillary action) so usually I clean up first to allow water to start evaporating and then either bull float it or screw your trowel to a lath at a angle to act as a long handle and then float it in long strokes, perfect job every time and easier than doing little sweeps with your arm and trowel, but as per usual good tidy work 👍
wheaten bread . Nice one thanks for the tip pal 👌🏼🧱👍🏼
Great video. Seriously Great 👍
Drew James Alexander MacDermid Thanks very much 🧱👍🏽
Nice job lads . Did 7 meters of it yesterday , stuff would drain you . I usually screw a bit of 2x1 either end of the tamp with 1 long screw holding them on .when you get out from the wall you can use the bit of 2x1 as a handle makes it easier to work .
bric bybrick . 7 metres 😳. Thanks for the tip pal 🧱👍🏼👌🏼

Would you recommend sealing down/taping the edges/joins of the DPM below the insulation so there is no moisture seepage into the insulation, which would reduce its efficiency. Would also suggest taping the edges and joins of the insulation
Good ideas 🧱👍🏽
I am not sure I've ever seen that. However for garage conversions the 100mm insulation means you do not need a DPM at all, either on the floor or the walls, but check that with B/C but mine said it was unnecessary.
@@fruitgums Surprised at that from BC. How do they know what damp proofing is under the garage floor? Any mention of taping the pir board joints?
Good job just l point screening is when you put a screed sharp sand and cement over your concrete

Little tip, next time put the 25mm upstands in first then use the floor insulation to hold it in place and stop it moving about 👍. Have you ever tried agilia concrete? I love the stuff
Think they cut 100mm into 25mm rips. If using 25mm sheet then totally agree. 👍
@@TurinTuramber yeah I thought that, but then the foil is facing the wrong way.doesnt make all that much difference though to be fair unless you've got underfloor heating
Ross Male . Yes we just ripped the 100 mil into strips , I like the 200 mm strips in first idea though , thanks .🧱👍🏼
Nice and smooth! spot on lads! I'll get you guys to do mine next time 🤣👍
Ha just sat watching you get piss wet through on roof 😬. Slabs can be very easy occasionally!😬 most of the time they can be awful to do . We prepped this one night in the week so we weren’t flapping in the morning of the pour . This one went well , glad you like it 🧱👍🏽
Great video again lads. We used to build up to DPC on face work then leave the blockwork down the thickness of the slab, or there abouts, then take some polystyrene the thickness of the cavity and place against the back of brickwork. Pour your slab using top of brickwork to screed off with dpm over the brickwork. Next day fold your dpm back on to the slab and remove the polystyrene which has formed your cavity. Place dpc on top of dpm from concrete slab and lay your blocks on it. Later trim off excess dpm on inside of blockwork. Slab is stronger because it is sat on your blockwork which in turn goes down to footings. You won't get any lateral damp on the edge of the slab either because it's completely wrapped with dpm. Cheers 👍
Helicrete Sydney . That method you describe is how our firm does new build house slabs . They are reinforced and called a suspended slab 👌🏼🧱👍🏼

Helicrete Sydney . Ah , I get you now pal . Thanks , that’s what the comments are all about 👌🏼👍🏽🧱
This method sound brilliant! Love the idea of the 'encased' slab. I wonder if UK Building Regulations would be ok with this method.
This method sounds brilliant!! Love the idea of the 'encased' and supported slab. Wonder if UK Building Regulations would be OK with this method.
Hey guys great job. That said it's not screening its tamping and sawing. Screed is a sharp saint mix usually 75 mm thick on top
Jay Fallows . Cheers pal ....... duff information from back when I was an apprentice 😬🧱👍🏽

Hihi, yeah! Then jump a mouse which just gave birth to a bunch of em' lol😋
I worked for a women that had 38 cats! I layed a massive concrete shed base and believe it or not there wasn’t a single paw Print
How satisfying does that feel when you get to that final bit of floating off. And I know we all work differently, but I like to get the superstructure up before I bosh the the floor out, apart from giving the concrete protection from the elements, you have somewhere to clean the mixer out at the end of the day, but nice job lads
Always great to get it done 👌🏼🧱👍🏽
A great video, thanks! It's very soothing, probably because I'm not actually having to do all that work. Why do you not have any rebar in the concrete?
Construction Channel Luxembourg Thanks glad you enjoyed it . No re bar because it’s not a suspended slab 🧱👍🏼👌🏼
Live in Africa, and I keep seeing videos like this, and no one uses steel in the concrete. Is there a reason why?

Can you put thicker insulation down if needs be..??
Yes David, you just dig deeper 🧱👍🏽
Are you not require to add reinforcement to your footings and slabs?
No not under a certain size 🧱👍🏽
Can an insulated pad be built up to ground level or is the starting point always from ground up? I ask I have a granite, 1870's cottage with floors at ground level and want to add a small rear extension, ideally level with the existing internal floors
High Phil I’m not sure what you mean mate 😬🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild So normally (what I've seen) the sub structure is blockwork to ground level and a couple of courses of brickwork and the pad is built up flush to that level, however back in the 1800s it appears there wasnt much thought about damp and so my floors are level with the ground outside.
Do I just need to wrap/extend the dpm up the sides of the blockwork to prevent damp penetration with damp course on top to prevent any wicking through the brickwork?
@@philij83 it’s a tough one that . Play safe and ask your local building control 🧱👍🏽
I'm starting to think about how to do the floor for a garage/workshop I'm building soon - I want to insulate it but it also needs to take a bit more weight than a domestic floor (cars, machine tools etc). Would a 6" slab with a bit of reinforcing mesh over dpm and 4" of insulation be about right? I've still got to work out what I'm doing with the pit too so I can work under the car!
Sounds good , a pit complicates things 😬. Good luck 🧱👍🏽
Really enjoyed this video. Can I ask what's the difference between DPM (Damp Proof Membrane) and DPC (Damp Proof Course) and where do they go? Where are they placed? And what's the difference in materials?
Dpc is used mainly in brickwork and is placed in at 150 mm above ground level . It Is made from wpquite thick plastic .
DPM is also made form plastic but comes in 4 m wide rolls . It is used under insulation then under concrete floors to stop rising damp . Hope that makes sense 👍🏼🧱
@@SteveAndAlexBuild Thank you very much. One last question: on a trench fill foundation, how high should you fill the trench? What's the minimum space you should allow from the main surface level of the house in order to allow for drainage and other services?
@@rishidoshi7280 No probs . I think it’s about 450 mm 🧱👍🏽
I have to give it to you pommies you sure do a good job. If that was in Australia i would wack some wooden piers down, treated pine bearers and joists some yellow tongue flooring covered it with cheap carpet and wacked my grandma in there as a bedroom.
Michael Magill . 😂😂 Thanks pal , I’m sure granny would love that 👌🏼🧱👍🏼
Thanks for taking the time and effort in making all these videos. Which is the best hardcore for a concrete floor. Also, does the concrete floor meet the damp course or just below it.
We use MOT . It compacts really well and the floor is level with the existing floor never just follow the dpc 🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild Thanks for the reply
@@antonios4926 . No probs 😁🧱👍🏽
Thank you for sharing such an informative video. Just about to have a conservatory built, & the builder has stated for the base - hardcore, sand, then polythene. So far so good. But then he states 100mm concrete on top with 100mm celotex, & finally 0.75 floor screed to finish. Sounds like an extra layer of concrete or screed to me? And no mention of polythene between concrete & celotex. I'd appreciate your thoughts, as I have no experience whatsoever. Many thanks.
All sounds good 100 mm in the minimum so you are getting a good floor there . As long as there is a Dpm in there somewhere it good to go 👌🏼🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild Thank you, much appreciate you taking the time to help out.
@@richardadams2877 No probs good luck with the build 🧱👍🏽
Nice video, how come no re-bar?
N-J eff . Thanks pal no need as the slab isn’t suspended 🧱👍🏽
Doesn't the DPM act like a pond liner and fill up with water before you finish building the extension?
If you left it yes but the idea is to prep the floor and concrete it straight away 🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild do you have to bring the liner up the sides of the brick? Can't you just cut it flat flush with the sand layer?
@@trevorkeast The Dpm needs to Lap up and under the dpc of the internal skin 🧱👍🏽
Steve, how wide do you normally make the internal leaf blockwork reveal for a 'regular' external doorway when preparing the substructure pls?
We just return the block to close the cavity at the same width as the door 🚪 🧱👍🏽

Great job guys. Relaying my old 1930 kitchen floor next weekend. I was worrying now about how level the sand binding is and will my insulation move a bit. I could see yours moving a bit (if I squinted 😂). I’m guessing under 120mm of concrete it ain’t gonna go anywhere. But love your thoughts. Cheers
Your right , once the concrete is on top and cured that insulation ain’t going anywhere 😉🧱👍🏼
Hello. I noticed the house we purchased the extention attached to the house - the flooring does not have insulation. There is a membrane and 4" concrete on the floor. However is there an option i could insalate the floor before we decide to put either laminate or carpet down? Thanks in advance
I don’t think there is much you can do to insulate the floor now as there isn’t much room . 😬🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild thanks for the reply man. So would we simply put 12mm underlay and carpet? Or am I missing something else
@@RUH24A I’m not too sure . Maybe ask at a builders merchant or a carpet shop they will know of any products that may help 🧱👍🏽

Ok an amateur here but can I just ask a silly question. How on earth does that insulation hold up over time? Would the concrete not sink very slightly over time? Surely it would. I told you it was a basic question.
PG Tips good question we just need to have faith in the manufacturers guarantee 😬🧱👍🏽
Hi , I know this is a while ago but would you happen to have the heights of all the different layers in the build up ?

Thought the Visqueen under the insulation should lap into the brickwork as well as the top one, why no A142 mesh ? never do a slab without it .

That is a different mix for laying other floor finishes on top say timber/laminate flooring or tiling etc. The action of using a straight edge to level it is screeding, same as a plasterer screeding off a wall 👍

Screeded or tampered ? I wouldn’t know 🙈
I believed screeded concrete was a polished concrete ?
I wonder why such finish needed ? Is the finished floor coming straight on it 🤔 ? Or is it just you wanting it to look perfect ? 😅😎👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Hi Jay, it’s the finished floor . The floor covering goes straight onto it 👌🏼🧱👍🏽
Jay Puyenbroeck screeding is laying screeds of concrete or mortar using a straight edge plasterers use screeds on walls to bring the mortar true and plumb
Rather than cut thin slithers, you should have cut the main insulation board to give at least 300mm of infill...never mind, you’ll know next time...!!
Stuart Nagle . Don’t understand what you mean 🤔
Is using 300mm minimum infills a building regulations requirement or your personal recommendation? Thanks
Got a 3m by 3m extension to do but having trouble with the footings some people say put rebar in in others are saying do it like this I your video how deep does the concrete and the trench dug out have to be?
