    Saw Joker in a theater in Miami Beach... they had to stop the movie. A big, unhinged dude, sitting alone near the front of the theater was, from minute one... yelling "Yeah Joker KILL those fuckin people".. he said stuff like this all through the movie.. loud... ushers tried to quiet him down.. he threatened them... manager came to try to take him out.. didnt work. They finally had to call the cops, escorts the rest of the audience out and give everyone passes.. cause we only got about half way in. People who have psychological issues definitely see that film differently.

    I actually hate Man on the Moon even more now because of the Jim and Andy documentary where Jim Carrey attempts to justify his method acting of annoying the hell out of the cast and crew daily as some out of body connection with Andy Kaufman. Jim Carrey is very talented but that doesn't mean he has free reign to waste people's time on set for his stupid make believe role of a more talented man.

    • @basquat76
      @basquat76 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      What i find funny about is that he's not actually that good in the role. He's way to energetic and erratic in his performance. Kaufman was so much more introverted and subtle in his manners and performances. He claims to be channeling Kaufman and yet gets it wrong.

    • @JJJ111JJJ
      @JJJ111JJJ 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      But, but, it's so quirky and eccentric and artistic! Method acting is unbelievably cringy and pompous.
      Dustin Hoffman didn't shower or sleep for days at a time to get in character for The Marathon Man. When Lawrence Olivier heard about it, he said "Son, why don't you try acting? It's so much easier".
      I wonder what Carrey would've said if the make-up artists applied make-up on him at their leisure, just to practice their skills for the movie. Whenever he was doing one of his Kaufman rants they should've just ran up and started brushing his face, without any regard to personal space or other people's work duties.

    I had read two Andy Kaufman biographies just before I saw “Man on the Moon” in a theater, and it just felt like “Andy’s Greatest Hits” compared to what I read. I agree that Jim Carrey doesn’t actually look like Andy, so the illusion just doesn’t work for me regardless of how much Carrey was channeling him. And I also thought it was odd that Danny DeVito played George Shapiro instead of himself. One strange moment is when you can see Christopher Lloyd and Carol Kane on the set of “Taxi” at a time when they weren’t in the cast yet. One nice thing I can say is that it’s sweet they got Andy’s granddaughter (whom he never met) to play his sister Carol when she was a little girl. Oh, and I do like the R.E.M. song. I remember thinking at the time “Automatic for the People” came out that it was cool that one of my favorite bands had a song about one of my favorite celebrities. Andy got immortalized in song!
    As for Terry Gilliam, I’m okay with the films I’ve seen, and “Brazil” is one of my all-time favorites. But I would agree that “The Fisher King” isn’t that great. I’m fine with Robin Williams here and there, but he can be very annoying in certain roles, and that’s one of them for me.
    The original version of “The Heartbreak Kid” is one I want to add to my DVD collection. It’s so cringe in the best possible way. I generally stay away from remakes of films that I’m quite fond of, so I’ve avoided Ben Stiller’s take on that character.
    I have three of the films discussed here: “The Devil’s Rejects,” “Romeo + Juliet,” and “Punch-Drunk Love.” I’d say one and done with the first two, but I’ll take anything by Paul Thomas Anderson.
    As for a film I hate, I know I’m not alone in my contempt for “Garden State.” A decent soundtrack shouldn’t be used to hide the fact that your movie sucks. The blatant use of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope is particularly annoying. And Natalie Portman is well-cast in that role, but she would’ve been better off in a different movie.

    If you guys do a Man in the Moon video, check out interviews with wrestler Jerry Lawler about how much he hates Jim Carrey (and how much he loved Andy Kauffman).
    You totally nailed Dogma, Kevin Smith's grotesquely overrated pile of crap. Every character sounds like Kevin Smith while he puts himself in the movie as a mute. Kevin saying, "Aren't I so clever?"
    What Kevin Smith is to comedy, Rob Zombie is to horror/grindhouse. Zombie is guilty for cultural misappropriation for using Free Bird to attract the white trash to The Devil's Rejects.
    Requiem for a Dream is a one and done. Like most of Aronofsky's films. (I hated Noah more). "Dated Marilyn Manson video." Nailed it.
    You guys have justified me not seeing Joker.
    Great list!

      @jacksonfritts2988 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Man I can’t stand Kevin Smith. Every one of his movies has a sort of preachiness that’s just so blatant. Dogma has some fun parts to it, Alan Rickman is probably the best part of it. But the whole deal of God is a woman and the quirky dialogue irks me terribly. It’s like the most reddit-core movie I’ve ever seen.

      I never understood the appeal of _Joker._ I like Jauqin as an actor, & he did well w/what he was given (i giess), but if you examine the film anywhere beyond that, it's just a try-hard rip-off of _The King of Comedy_ w/a much larger budget due to it being made under the slapped-on DC label. There were _sooo_ many reviews from critics I usually respect the opinions of who were like _"This film is a masterpiece of modern cinema. A true work of art!"_ & I was so confused by the amount of hype vs how _meh_ 🤷🏼‍♂️ I actually felt by the end credits. This is an extremely unpopular opinion, but I actually enjoyed Leto's _damaged_ portrayal of the character more than the malnourished, overtly dramatacized, pathetic, effeminate, mentally ill mama's boy version Juaqin played.

      I enjoy Dogma, though I can see why people wouldn't enjoy it. The comedy is close to the sort that I don't like very much, so it puzzles me a bit. Requiem was powerful, but the drug taking montage was waaay too frequent. Ditto with the second Judge Dredd movie.

    "Have you ever wondered what was going to be like if a frat boy who just recently finished The Communist Manifesto made Taxi Driver and King of Comedy? Well, Joker is here to satisfy your imagination. A film without any nuance whatsoever made by a man that only thinks in moral extremes and favors superficiality, supported by two hours of Phoenix's outtakes, self-indulgence, and a total lack of direction."

      As far as it being a "rip-off" of Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, I have a secret; every piece of fiction is derivative of what has come before it. There are about 10-12 plots/themes for fiction. What counts is what you do with them.
      "Frat boy"? Lmao. You're not very bright. Joker's first kills are literally Wall Street bros harassing a woman on the subway.

    I’d really delight in an episode tearing apart the works of Charlie Kaufman. I cannot think of a filmmaker/artist who I’ve done such a complete 180 on - from thinking he was a brilliant, profound existentialist, a modern day Borges, in my early 20s to realizing he was vapid, indulgent and solipsistic in my 30s. If you need to pick one, his most recent is his most egregious offense and would’ve definitely been one of my picks. I hate it with a fiery passion.

I don’t have “Human Nature” or “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” but I’ve got the other half-dozen he’s done. I agree with all these. In particlular, I thought The Devil’s Rejects was easily one of the worst movies I’d seen in years but had friends raving about it. I love horror and grindhouse so it’s not some issue of being “shocked” or what have you-it’s just terrible.

    The worst movie EVER was "It's Pat". It had one premise, it had no plot, and at the end it had to make "a statement" by having a gay couple in line when "something" happened. At the time I would watch all movies all the way through. I couldn't get through it! And the worst Shakespeare dialog check out Keanu Reeves in Much Ado About Nothing. It's the worst!

    Thanks for posting the Ebert/Roeper review of The Devil's Rejects. The fact is this movie got great reviews at the time because of political divison over the Bush administration. The film signals to the anti-Bush crowd and it worked like gangbusters. I saw it in the theater and was flabbergasted at how bad it was.

    I feel terrible saying this because when I was young I used to think I loved Terry Gilliam and his uncompromising wacky vision but I’ve revisited his classic films recently and my god are they irritating, massively OTT and just simply, bad. I still love what he did with Python but his films are an absolute grind.

      The Fisher King is seriously overrated. I love 12 Monkeys though, and recently watched Baron Munchausen, which thoroughly baffled and frustrated me. But now that I have a clearer idea of what it is about, I like it.

      Well, you’re not gonna know you won’t like it until you’ve seen it. Of course, a remake of a classic should generally be avoided, and there are certain directors and actors who almost always guarantee a film will be unwatchable. But ultimately you’ll have to see the film to know for sure.
