    True story…I shit you not: when Lance Armstrong was visiting Vegas about 20 years ago to see Cheryl Crow perform at the Andre Agassi “Grand Slam” charity concert, he rode the Red Rock circuit on the advice of a local. Being a National Monument (not a National Park), there is an entry gate. Not knowing that there is just a simple, one-way circuit, Armstrong stopped to ask the gate attendant where to go. The gate attendant kindly informed him of the route, but not knowing who he was, the attendant also made sure to advise him to be careful because it was a difficult climb. 🤦🏻‍♂️

    I met Didi the Devil at Phitsanaluk airport in Thailand after a L’Etape event in December. The hat was on all flight, the trident folded in his bag.

    Loved the Shining references 🖤
    And also all this random ramblings, strange animals, and a trip to Vegas remind me of the Sopranos' episode "Kennedy and Heide" episode where Tony went to Vegas for a psychedelic trip 😃

    Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate, with the chemical formula CaSO4·2H2O.[4] It is widely mined and is used as a fertilizer and as the main constituent in many forms of plaster, blackboard or sidewalk chalk, and drywall.

    It was great to meet you at the book signing (the book is awesome, by the way)! I wanted to invite you to Central New York to try out some of the crazy hills we have available but I was a little star struck and could only get out "big fan, love your channel". I get the redrum reference from your book, way better than the penises and explicit stuff my friends used to draw on the mirrors!

    I have a reputation with a regular riding partner for always stopping to move turtles off the road or trail. It’s become a thing he harasses me about but I hear he did it for a turtle recently when I wasn’t around. Must be catching.
    I stopped the car a few days ago for a massive (2’ plus, including the tail) snapping turtle on the shoulder of an interstate on-ramp. Couldn’t figure out how to move the thing, it was so large. Was truly afraid of loosing a finger or two in the process.

    Just to make you jealous Phil, I encountered a large turtle (not a tortoise) on the road during a recent ride in the countryside west of Petaluma CA. (s)he was a big one with a 10" shell. I moved him off to the side of the road and relative safety. A very cool encounter!

    Phil..Finally I have done a ride you have also been on...Red Rock Canyon...Guy said to me when I started that day..."you know its 7 miles up"..whaaaaat?..Great, and glad to have done it. Also did River mountain trails loop in Henderson, 35 miles paved off road course, which I did also. There I met a guy who had stuff hanging out the back of his saddle....his tent or something I found out....I asked him...have you been to RR canyon.... His reply...yup, I just cycled from there....Feeling insufficient enough, I asked another question of him...so what is with all the stuff then on your bike...reply...I'm training for Trans America...I at that point metaphorically threw my bike away..I tracked him, he completed the thing, and placed very well...Phil, love your joy of cycling...Vegas, never a dull moment, just dull headaches by over consuming ...I used to work for a company called British Gypsum .....way back as a 17 year old in Glasgow, Scotland...It is an ingredient that goes into the manufacture of drywall...the stuff you hear through in Hotels..lol

    Vegas locals: How unsafe is that highway 160 climb when the road isn’t closed?

    • @josephsmith1854
      @josephsmith1854 ปีที่แล้ว

      From my memory 8+ years ago not bad at all in the mornings. Large enough shoulders up and down the climb. Down more likely to take the right lane though, but your speed is high enough.

    • @jamesboone686
      @jamesboone686 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cars are fast on it
      It's the most direct route between parhump and Vegas
      But wide shoulders

    • @joshuahoover
      @joshuahoover ปีที่แล้ว

      Wide shoulder. Fast (65+ mph) traffic in 2 lanes up & down. A little concerning going down as there are some small gates in the shoulder which make for tight positioning at speed.

    After watching this video, I realized how small and snug Phil's helmet is compared to his head. Think I just found 10 free watts at 40kmh. Do any aero gurus in here know if the Evade helmet is fastest?

    • @AB-fh9zh
      @AB-fh9zh ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no fastest helmet, it differs from person to person. Having said that, the Evade is a good design. But the main reason I got one is because it fits me really well.

  • @Xhadp
    @Xhadp ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As soon as I heard 5% avg I knew you weren't going to take it, that is still in drafting territory so no surprise that a relatively unknown person took it with likely a team of people to draft behind.

    • @tylerharris998
      @tylerharris998 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is incorrect, I gotta stand up for the Vegas locals haha. James Piccoli set the kom solo. He probably has the fastest 30 times up that climb. Phil was just slower. Now if Phil had good conditions on the climb instead of the headwind, he probably does it in 14:20 instead of 15:20. But still far off James' time.
