This was actually one of my favorites. I think first due to the spontaneous nature of it, second how crazy it looks and then coming in one second off Wout?
I just spent two weeks on all three islands. Almost all the climbs are like that over there. If you love to climb this is one of the best places I have ever been.,
Good to see you back in Europe Phil. The Canary Islands are wonderful for a winter vacation. I have not biked there yet, but I have hiked a lot. My favorite island is La Palma in the spring when the almond trees are in bloom. I guess next time you have to do the Roque de los Muchachos KOM (in english it means: ""Rock of the Boys"", which is pretty funny) on La Palma. You have all my respect how you go up these climbs - you make it look so easy, it is incredible - omg so close to position 4, damn cars in the hairpins. Have a wonderful time with your wife.
Second time through and I’m convinced that this is perhaps your best work! The perfect balance of background scenery and Phil’s razor sharp snark!! Can’t understand why this doesn’t get more views…
“I appreciate you…but I hate you!”🤣. If this doesn’t go viral, people are not.watching the right stuff! This could be your best one yet! Thanks for helping me to feel your pain.
Kept on going up and up and up. Thought you were going to suddenly bonk ... but I was drawn into watching your pain. Surprised you could walk afterwards! Great entertainment. Loved the van driver shouting encouragement and squeezing through impossible gaps
There's a very famous hike through a river bed in the Masca gorge. Probably that's where the cars where going and it is definitely the reason for the tour buses. I've been there as a child and seen them come down.
Absolutely enjoyed all the honeymoon videos, especially this one. Considering you were enjoying the honeymoon your performance was spectacular. Just a few seconds from the very top of the leaderboard.
Come on! That was awesome. If the traffic hadn’t been there you would have been higher on the list, but look who’s ahead of you. That’s Amazing! Thanks for that one.
Phil talking about being 38 next year. Ask if Pozzovivo could go faster on this climb at 40 ;) Joking aside, I would love to be anywhere near this fast. I am in awe of how fast WT and ex-WT riders are
After seeing it in the 2013 TdF, my recent honeymoon was in Corsica. The bike came as well as the wife. We’re still married. Great videos Phil. Thank you for sharing your suffering.
that's hella impressive PG; I drove down this climb back in February - it's bonkers; was in the afternoon and traffic was mad both ways, so that was a no go because driving down was hairy enough, it'd have been a nightmare trying to climb it and deal with stop-n-go traffic; will try early morning next time
L@nce Armstr*ng used to train on Masca. Aside: I was pleased to be *just* within 200% of Kwiato's time on the climb. It's brutal if you're north of 80kgs.
Most of these cars are rentals, Masca is a very popular tourist spot, Phil (: so that's where they're all going - chasing the views, experiencing the road.
@@worstretirementever No they’re not 😂 going there early was actually the best choice, I’ve been there in december around noon, and all those tourists in their small cars are really dangerous, and annoying! Great job on that climb, btw! 🔥
Thanks Emily and Phil, amazing climbing Phil. How would you rate this on your best climbing performances given the company you were close to on the Strava leaderboard?
My only question is: why did you retire again?! You are placing top 10 with current world tour riders, who train with a team and compete all year long. You are in your own…. Incredible!!!!
He's explained it in the other videos countless times over and over. Teams usually aren't needing his style of riding. You have to remember that those are just the people on Strava. How many do you think would be able to get above Phil's time if every single World Tour Pro rode up and posted to Strava? Froome was able to pace with two others up Teide. I'm sure the other pros would be able to post a respectable time vs Phil if they weren't racing around the globe.
@@Xhadp I am messing with Phill. His channel allows some healthy sarcasm. just so we’re clear I assure you I understand Strava, world tour and many many other things cycling related pretty well. :) Now let me be even more clear and respond to your comment accordingly, based on how Phill rides today in mid 30 after a major injury for which I believe he had a surgery… it is incredible, I mean phenomenal, to ride at the Mecca cycling training consistently on top 10, without a team. In the whole world maybe there are 5 guys that could do as many KOM attempts or ride 7 hour Everest’s without a full supporting team. not talking about just physical capabilities, talking about the amount of time you need to spend on the bike, nutrition, financial support etc etc and in the end the pure talent you must have it’s incredible…
The amount of time you're able to hold 400+ watts is insane! I did 2 hours on the trainer today and even took a Zwift KOM... my average was under 200w and peak power was only 480w 😭
Yeah, the big tour buses freaked me out on that incredible road. There's no way I'd climb that with those things going up and down. That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.
Great effort and fun vid (for us at least). Did you win your age group on Strava? Also curious if Remco did this on a training ride, in a race or just to smash a KOM for fun?
Was looking for sunglasses tonight. Look ma, no hands. You look tough to that picture, but I remember you arm wrestling in an old video. You ain’t that tough. Seriously though, are the sunglasses decent? Great job on the hill climb.
This used to be a really nice place to climb BUT since everybody is covered by a car it isn't funny anymore - THANKS for showing the world how not to do it
Just want to say thanks to Emily, I really appreciate her for letting you suffer for our pleasure
Haha I’ll let her know. I almost made it back before she woke up on this one. “It was all a dream…”
Man, you came in just behind all those heavy hitters (Remco, Superman, WVA), and all on a last-minute whim. Not bad for a retired old fart.
Crazy to see Wout was up there at No.5 with 82 kg. I wonder how much power he had put out for the 14 min climb 😱👊
This was actually one of my favorites. I think first due to the spontaneous nature of it, second how crazy it looks and then coming in one second off Wout?
Came here to say just this. 👍
Honestly Wout wasn't probably making an effort and he is winning the big races, which is what matters in the end. This guy is just making some videos.
@@robmaas3356 bedankt voor de info
Bravo Phil! Kwiato had the KOM on Masca for ages and you were only 9 secs off his time.
That road quality, though. They've really understood the importance of it and its link to tourism on the Spanish islands.

"He was goin' "FLAT F*CK" hahahahaha!!! best comment on this channel, EVER! haha!
I think this climb would have taken me the entire day
for real I couldnt even go 30 seconds on 17%
Second time through and I’m convinced that this is perhaps your best work! The perfect balance of background scenery and Phil’s razor sharp snark!! Can’t understand why this doesn’t get more views…
Can’t add a lot about the climb, but your commentary was Grand Tour stage winning worthy- chapeau!
lol…. when you say “REMCO” - that wasn’t acting. Amazing.
That top 10 is a murderer's row!!!
Wout only had you by a second! That's massive!!!
Phenomenal effort. Fantastic that you ended up in that top 10.
So awesome Phil. My legs are indeed hurting in solidarity 😂. Putting that climb on my 65yo to do list
Great series of videos Phil and Emily. Good to have you in Europe!
Thank you!
Shoutout THE black bibs.. I like them! THEY recently updated the the pad design on the inside

Woulda been awesome if Emily was the one driving the car yelling at you to hurry up cuz she has her own things to go do
Strava should notify everyone on the leaderboard whenever you upload a segment
I felt the part before the coffee guy, where it kinda leveled off, but you could see it spikes back up. Those false summits are rough.
"Don't know if that's something to be proud of or embarrassed by"... I felt that in my bones.
There's a very famous hike through a river bed in the Masca gorge. Probably that's where the cars where going and it is definitely the reason for the tour buses. I've been there as a child and seen them come down.
Brutal climb, and also one of the most beautiful I have seen (in video) with the stunning mountains and also really cool plants along the way.
well done. you are in pretty good company on that top ten list.
Thanks for visit us you are Welcome 💪🏻👍🏻
Absolutely enjoyed all the honeymoon videos, especially this one. Considering you were enjoying the honeymoon your performance was spectacular. Just a few seconds from the very top of the leaderboard.
But is that what she said?
Kudos from the Tenerife Board of Tourism.
Come on! That was awesome. If the traffic hadn’t been there you would have been higher on the list, but look who’s ahead of you. That’s Amazing! Thanks for that one.
That was awesome, Phil. I did a big bit of climbing, for me, this week, and watching this was a lot of fun. My legs ached in unison. Well done.
Terrific video. Great effort. Really stunning climb. Great views, excellent surface, tough challenge, just long enough to bury yourself.
Good show Phil! Keep having fun!
Amazing congratulations 🍾🎉 Du bist eine Maschine
This is here in Switzerland a compliment for someone with almost surhuman power
Great effort! Good day or not, what a beautiful road! And yes, those stone blocks would be bad. That's how we lost Fabio Casartelli.
Absolutely Awesome Phil.
Thanks for the video Phil! I hope you enjoyed your honeymoon... 1 second behind Wout Van Aert ain't too shabby!💪🚴💪🚴
Wow - awesome effort. That is one hellish climb!
Hi Phil. You can also try Aripe Chirche uphill, it‘s about 34%-35% at some place. It is at village Chio.
Phil talking about being 38 next year. Ask if Pozzovivo could go faster on this climb at 40 ;)
Joking aside, I would love to be anywhere near this fast. I am in awe of how fast WT and ex-WT riders are
Congrats on crushing the ride. Good timing with the release of this as Remco is battling Primoz.
Wish you are here Korea Phil! Nice video
What a beautiful climb!
Well done mate! That looked tough, nice location though
You should have also pointed out that second place was a guy named “Superman”! 😂
After seeing it in the 2013 TdF, my recent honeymoon was in Corsica. The bike came as well as the wife. We’re still married. Great videos Phil. Thank you for sharing your suffering.
"When i am doing 500 watts and still loosing time ..." best comment ever :D
Phil’s usually sneaky funny, but this video is loaded with Philisms. I missed this one!
Damn Bro! That is a world class time. 👍
Hot damn...you are in impressive company on that leaderboard. Epic effort. 💪
dude! You a monster 😮 beast mode

Great work, there was a lot of seconds added from had to use brakes when meeting cars.
You’re a savage Phil !
This is INSANE. I almost died there and you climb it like it was 5%
Well done dude
Great honeymoon series with a big finale!!! GRACIAS; SUPER DIVERTIDO!!!
At 90kg, I wasn't able to do this climb, I had to take the broom car. absolutely brutal and crazy the speed you're going on it.
Rode it a bit slower last month…awesome effort there from you.
L@nce Armstr*ng used to train on Masca. Aside: I was pleased to be *just* within 200% of Kwiato's time on the climb. It's brutal if you're north of 80kgs.
Again....I hate climbing....but I do like your videos! Great job! Beautiful Scenery. DD
Good result

Haha I see that in Malibu. I imagine they mostly do not feel comfortable driving those switchbacks

F’n impressive! Matching times w current tour riders. C’mon! Damn good job
When Phil says heartrate is up at 170 .. meanwhile i'm grinding 60 rpm's at 210 heart rates on 1km hills 😂
Great climb!
Thanks Emily and Phil, amazing climbing Phil. How would you rate this on your best climbing performances given the company you were close to on the Strava leaderboard?
Damn! How many years out of the game, and still pulling WT numbers.
Gosh I wish I was into cycling when I lived in spain...

What a beautiful climb. If only it wasn't so brutal, one might actually get to enjoy the scenery
Lol. I love this bit at 8:10 - I appreciate you guys, and I umm..hate you. Dry as anything.
Damn! 1 second behind WVA. It's not everyday you go to the line with him ;-). Brutal climb though.
Nice!
When he said remco I lost it 😂😂😂
A really beautiful place to suffer. I applaud your maximum effort.
Great suffering, makes me want to try!
Stacked board!!!
The amount of time you're able to hold 400+ watts is insane! I did 2 hours on the trainer today and even took a Zwift KOM... my average was under 200w and peak power was only 480w 😭
Magic 👌
Add KOM time, your elapsed time, and your distance to go.
That looks horrific, both to ride up and drive up!
Yeah, the big tour buses freaked me out on that incredible road. There's no way I'd climb that with those things going up and down. That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.

Remco!!😢😢
beast!
"REMCO?? Remco." 🤣
That's about as perfect as pavement gets.
I love this. I was just there and did this climb in March. We must have just missed each other. How are there no cars? Is this at 6am?
Not quite that early, but yes early
Go back and do valley of the tears! That one was harder imo, steeper and worse pavement but no cars 🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️
only in Europe these roads can be not 1 way traffic only haha
Haha! You are welcome :)
Was looking for sunglasses tonight. Look ma, no hands. You look tough to that picture, but I remember you arm wrestling in an old video. You ain’t that tough. Seriously though, are the sunglasses decent? Great job on the hill climb.
Old retired cyclist DESTROYS Vincenzo Nibali.
My video title if I was better at click bait
am I hearing this right but you did it twice, once as a warmup
No fluids for the full effort or did I miss it??
Imagine the notification 7th place would have got
1 sec of from the golden child wva, why did you retire?
Captain obvious here:
Remco is fast.
This used to be a really nice place to climb BUT since everybody is covered by a car it isn't funny anymore - THANKS for showing the world how not to do it
1 second off wout 😂
I'm out of breath
