  • Episode 3, we get down and dirty in the desert. Just outside of Las Vegas, we meet up with former Tour De France Yellow Jersey winners Floyd Landis and David Zabriskie to talk about pro cycling both past & present, and learn about their new venture Floyd's of Leadville. This is one of the most fun and candid interviews we've done so far. Hope you enjoy!

    About the Series: "Riding Fixed, Up Mountains, With Pros." The concept is simple, we wanted to get to know our favorite Pro cyclists and what better way to conduct a natural interview than on the bike, taking them out of their comfort zone just a bit by doing in with NO GEARS (and no brakes sometimes).

    "They gave me all this grief in the news for cheating and winning. What about all the guys who cheated and lost..."
    Classic! Landis is hilarious and seems to be in a good place. Makes me happy that that mess is behind him.

    The best part of this video is how much fun they are having riding. Isn't that what cycling is truly about anyway.
    Dave's right about the hero's journey. The racing was the hell. Now, life is okay. You read Floyd's book and the the best part are the opening chapters, him growing up and discovering the bike, and a love of cycling. Great to see them try to recapture that.

      @@richardsonj96 You've got to be kidding... Armstrong actively sought to destroy the lives of everyone who crossed him, cf. the Andreus, calling Emma O'Reilly a whore, offering $300k to a former LeMond teammate to claim LeMond used EPO.. and you think Landis was WORSE?
      The saddest part is that f---er is the one laughing all the way to the bank - and said so publically.

    I've done that ride in 112 degrees - I train in thousand oaks every year on a fixed met them there one year - very down to earth guys. I asked them where they were staying and Dave said in his car. I answered really me too!!! I never thought I would see them on a track bike especially on that climb.

    A lot of bonding with this video... I've ridden that ride and it's a bucket list ride for all... so beautiful... Floyd and Dave... two amazing cyclists who deserve much more credit and accolades than they appear to accept. Both are champions and should be recognized as such. yes there was a long dark period in cycling and it likely continues but that doesnt mean these two worked any less or rode any less committed than any other cyclist in any period. Cheers to you Dave and Floyd. You have fans!!!

    Given the lashing admitted dopers get in the media it's nice to see some frank discussion with them. I'm sure they still have a passion for the bike. To be ostracized by society from that had to be difficult. Not to say it wasn't warranted to some degree. But I think we come down too hard on athletes caught cheating. They're paying the bills on a far riskier job than us.

  • @Heavywall70
    @Heavywall70 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    The Landis comment that opens the video has always been my argument, it was essentially a level playing field
    As a matter of fact those eights years of The Tour record no winners because everyone was at it.
    I’d venture that if Lance and Floyd weren’t Americans that nothing would’ve been blown out that far. But that is just my opinion

    • @jdslfc
      @jdslfc 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      doesn't Zabriskie saying that Floyd really went for it contradict you. Yes most of them cheated, but to different degrees. Not a level playing field.

    • @statebicycle
      @statebicycle  6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      In talking with Floyd and watching countless documentaries and films like "The Program" - it's clear to see there was a culture and expectation for GC riders who wanted to be at the top to go "all in" on these programs. By no means do we condone what he did, but its easy to see why riders did it at that time. As Floyd says in the video - these riders train their whole life to reach a certain level, then when they get there things aren't as they seem. At that point riders have sacrificed far too much to turn back. Talking to Floyd put a lot of things in perspective and overall things aren't as black and white as they may seem. Phil Gaimon touched on this also during our interview.

    • @immatureradical
      @immatureradical 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, turning the sport into a competition of who has the best doctors, the best medicine, the largest doping budget, the strongest connections into the sport's corruption etc and telling young kids who come to the sport that they have to play that game, "a level-playing field".
      How simplistic can our thinking be when we want to find excuses.

    • @jonahconner1111
      @jonahconner1111 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They were all cheating somehow, but it wasn't totally level. Doping is and always has been an arms race, everyone does it in a different way.

    • @spacewizard9571
      @spacewizard9571 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      State Bicycle Co. Absolutely disgusting to defend any of them, do you apply this mentality to any of your own factory riders? Im sure you do, theyve worked too hard to not cheat according to you. Drugs actually are black and white, you either put a banned substance in your body or you didnt.
