That is really funny and yeah it is a negotiating tactic ive heard of before, just get up and walk away to stubborn people and they sometimes crack under their own headgames
1:52 That’s great character actor & native Texan Bruce McGill. Love his work especially as D-Day on Animal House & my favorite role of his as Mike on The Last Boy Scout. Great story BCCID.
I liked him when he played Ralph Houk, in the film 61*, directed by baseball lover Billy Crystal. That wonderful summer of 1961 when Maris & Mantle battled it out for the home run title.
Great story,😊.. love the image you used ha cigar and whiskey 😂😂.. glad it worked out and it's always fun looking through them.. wondering if you ended up finding anything looking back.. take care and Thank you Chris 👍
From one dealer to another who's been in the racket (mostly coins but cards in the 80's and early 90's), this is an excellent channel. You're straight-up and express the reality of purchasing all kinds of collections, accumulations, etc. BEYOND THE NUMBERS. Some of these deals are akin to play No Limit Texas Hold'em. Though I haven't come across one yet, I am sure you have some ethics explanations in here as well. You have a new subscriber.
I used to employ the “walk away” move when I scalped tickets to concerts in the parking lot of the Meadowlands in the 1980s. Works great, even when you aren’t trying to “negotiate”. Also, love the photo of D-Day from Animal House! Really puts you in the office with the guy.😁
Really liked the memory.. I started back in cards in 2011 around the same time. Even to this day I hate negotiating or the back and forth of things. I deal in fairness as my motto. Usually if I feel the deal is sincere I am willing to give more, if I feel I'm being played with more smoke I usually walk away. Things have really changed in the last couple years of sport card collecting.
Agreed. Lots of hawks out there that will try tactics like these in order to take advantage of others. Supposed that's why it's important to be very knowledgeable of the cards you're looking to buy (and sell) and what the value is because you can be swiftly taken for if not careful.
CHRIS,thank you for wise knowledge about deals, profits, Ebay and other stories. Like buying a car ,good to know who your dealing with and getting the best for your money !
"If you're ever negotiating with a super wealthy business mogul, just get up and walk away. He'll give you whatever you want." (you said this with a straight face but I was cracking up at your summary)
Hey Chris, that was a good story. I can imagine the pressure the guy put on you, trying to intimidate you into paying more. Good for you for not breaking, in the end you got the deal. Looking forward to your next post. Cheers, have a good week. Stay safe.
I agree with you Chris. Sometimes you have to walk away. Our time is the most valuable thing we can give up. Glad you held strong and did not try to negotiate.
I know this wasn't your intent, but I like this tactic. I've done it a few times at used car dealerships. I had one salesman chase me back to my car... works great!
Loved the story..you share these experiences with great honesty and humor. The constant injection of the factionalized photo was hilarious. In the words of Oliver Twist...more please. Great stuff.
Cool story! I got my dog from Craigslist a few years ago and my kids thought I was nuts taking $800 cash to buy her in another state! So, my husband and I quit collecting cards in the early 2000's and just started reorganizing our collection. Went back to our favorite monthly local card show and some of the same folks were there from 18 years ago! These guys really know their stuff and always gave me good deals. I didn't buy anything this week but I really wanted an Al Kaline autographed rookie card I saw........
Lol! Awesome story! I’m just getting back into collecting cards after 20+ years. Totally different game today for sure. I really enjoy your videos and appreciate you taking your time & energy to share your experiences with us. Thank you for that and keep up the Great work!
Lot of people in sales could learn something from this. Never back down or be intimidated and sometimes you just have to walk away. Good story man I laughed out loud when you called you back.
The corollary lesson to walking out is convincing oneself that it truly is a walk-out and that one's at peace without the buy. Hard to do but killing off that desire internally makes it real and not an act and the craziest things will occur in response by a seller. Great story, as always.
I love the story. I hate dealing with junk wax era people who don't know the value of their cards. Just because it's old, and you have boxes of it, doesn't mean they're all Black Label Kobe Chrome Refractor RCs! 1.8M for that card. Mind blown! That was my dream card back in the day. That card was 8K raw and super rare in 2000. Great channel!
I admire your focus and dedication to your passion. Make sure to take care of yourself. A great way to do this is massage tools like ones you can lean on that will keep your body pumping and not idling. Great for car rides too! Foot massagers, etc are great sedentary ways to keep body and Brain sharp!
Nice story, I work in the restaurant business in NY for most of my life, we get a lot of captain of industry types over the years. They are bullies who only respect people when they stand their ground.
What a great story . I can’t wait for the next one . I could sit and watch you for hours telling your stories. Excellent work . Smashed the like . POW 👊
great story. i need to document some of my past interactions. no good card ones but i took sales course from intense fella. I'll never forget "Silence is deafening" . I took another course from much nicer guy who told us more truths like, "you can hear a smile on the phone " and "happiness is contagious " so is unhappiness was his point, but not the one i focused on. thank you for spreading happiness. have a great day. my phone went ka-ching twice today, i think i should turn off ebay sales notifications. its addictive, wanna lower prices to hear it sometimes
Great story. I have a feeling that's one reason prices are so high today. Guys like him should stick to whatever business he knows. Cards can make you money but it's not the stock market in my opinion. I'm a collector only, but it's fun to hear from the pros.
Bwhahahaah. So much awesomeness. These are my favorite videos. I don't care if you just start making up stories you're a great story. teller and I bet you could come up with some doozy's.
It is mind boggling how many "collections" there are like this one out there. Junk wax era really did a number on people. I've probably gone on a dozen wild goose chases looking through friends and friends of friends closet tubs of 90-91 commons, only finding myself in that situation because the person said "I have a ton of old baseball cards, can you see what they are worth." I find it much harder to convince people that their "collection" is worthless than I do trying to negotiate a price on a high dollar card. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.
@@tigerjordan8986 That's the problem though, isn't it? You can't say no to the possibility of the rare gem hidden in the pile of junk. So you end up looking through thousands of cards. Most of what I have been hunting through is 89-92 junk, of which there's just nothing worth the time, but then sometimes they'll have mid to late 90s football or basketball, which has tons of possibilities.
@@jamesdaugherty06 there are at least 100 cards of "junk wax era" cards that sell for 500-5000 dollars in good condition. you must come across crappy conditioned cards because I myself have bought boxes for 50 bucks and after grading and slabbing turned that into 25,000
Nice video. I just bought a collection the other day. The negotiation process can certainly be awkward and I struggle with that. I’m hoping to learn a few techniques and advice from your videos!
TH-cam recommends many sports cards videos to me and I almost always pass, except for yours; because you are real. Keep it up, dude! The more "story time" vids, the better (even if they aren't yours)!
Little did you know that he had a $1 million side bet with one of his mega-rich friends that he could actually get someone to pay him for his junk wax!
Honestly, finding a number and sticking to it is the best strategy for buying anything from random people. I've had people call or message me back days or even weeks after I made an offer asking if I would still pay the same amount as I initially offered. If you're fair with your offers then you'll end up with a lot of successful deals and people realize that you're probably not coming up anymore for a reason.
NICE ... now lets open that box behind you that says 'INVESTMENT #1' ... :) Love the stories, keep them coming! (and you should change those boxes every once in awhile putting fake labels on them for kicks ... like 'PSA GEM MINT 1986 Fleer investment' and see if anyone notices and asked for you to reveal LOL!
I don't know which I liked better, the "I like your style, kid, we have a deal." or your shots and cigar bit! 🤣🤣 Man, I'll tell you, you could be a screen writer! You can really put your audience right into your shoes! Really enjoyed this, bro. 😁👍💯
I don't know if anybody will see this but this story is awesome. Great videos keep it up and thank you
That is really funny and yeah it is a negotiating tactic ive heard of before, just get up and walk away to stubborn people and they sometimes crack under their own headgames
lovin the old school stories!
2012 is Old School...boy I’m really old school. Lol
You are an epic storyteller. IMHO, this is your best video yet. I like your style kid .... lolz
I am partial to the 1953 Musial story.
I have game apparently
1:52 That’s great character actor & native Texan Bruce McGill. Love his work especially as D-Day on Animal House & my favorite role of his as Mike on The Last Boy Scout. Great story BCCID.
I remember him as Jack Dalton on MacGyver!!
He was the boss in Timecop starring Van Damme
He was great in the Al Pacino movie "The Insider." "YOU WIPE THAT SMIRK OFF YOUR FACE!"
I liked him when he played Ralph Houk, in the film 61*, directed by baseball lover Billy Crystal. That wonderful summer of 1961 when Maris & Mantle battled it out for the home run title.
I need longer videos man! Your videos are very interesting.

I thought he said he felt like he paid 50 dollars too much......the guy intimidated him to go to 250
Love the stories, back in the day low balling vendors at swamp meets and big flea markets at closing time is how I landed some good cards.
I agree with you Chris. Sometimes you have to walk away. Our time is the most valuable thing we can give up. Glad you held strong and did not try to negotiate.
Really happy I subbed! Love the content. Thanks for the videos, and the knowledge.

I truly admire your candor and being trustworthy especially in a difficult situation like that and calling his bluff ! Good job!
Love these stories. Thanks for sharing.
another classic story from the Baseball card collector investor dealer (in that order), would love to hear more of these !
This one was inadvertently really funny with the business tycoon folding like a pack of cards, keep em coming love the old tales :)

Love all your videoes, great to hear all your stories on both success and failures it's very interesting thank you.
Great story - this is how you learn to negotiate. Sometimes that may work and sometimes not.
I love your stories! Look forward to the opportunity to someday hear some stories in person.
Funny story, thanks for sharing Chris.

This is so true. Id say 60% of all collections out there are junk wax era.
Interestingly, a lot of the Junk Wax stuff has suddenly become very valuable the past 12mos that folks never predicted would. Countless examples.
