The piece takes us through the despair that arises when the Light has gone out and the pen has run dry, the door-to-door quest to rekindle the inner flame, and the return to the hearth and home. It is both spiritual and erotic, while maintaining a separate and literal meaning suitable for children.
The incredible thing about this poem is that every line is 5 syllables long, and it alternates back and forth between the usage of masculine and feminine nouns, line by line.
(English Translation Below)
Traditional French lyrics:
"Au clair de la lune,
Mon ami Pierrot,
Prête-moi ta plume
Pour écrire un mot.
Ma chandelle est morte,
Je n'ai plus de feu.
Ouvre-moi ta porte
Pour l'amour de Dieu."
Au clair de la lune,
Pierrot répondit:
"Je n'ai pas de plume,
Je suis dans mon lit.
Va chez la voisine,
Je crois qu'elle y est,
Car dans sa cuisine
On bat le briquet."
Au clair de la lune,
L'aimable Lubin
Frappe chez la brune,
Elle répond soudain:
"Qui frappe de la sorte?"
Il dit à son tour:
"Ouvrez votre porte,
Pour le Dieu d'Amour."
Au clair de la lune,
On n'y voit qu'un peu.
On chercha la plume,
On chercha du feu.
En cherchant d'la sorte,
Je n'sais c'qu'on trouva;
Mais je sais qu'la porte
Sur eux se ferma
English Translation:
"By the light of the moon,
My friend Pierrot,
Lend me your quill (pen)
To write down some words.
My candle is dead,
I have no light left.
Open your door to me
For the love of God."
By the light of the moon,
Pierrot replies:
"I don't have any pens,
I am in my bed
Go to the neighbour's,
I think she's there
Since in her kitchen, I can see
Someone is lighting the fire."
By the light of the moon
Our likeable character
Knocks on the brunette's door.
Startled, she responds:
“Who's knocking like this?!”
He replies in turn:
“Open your door to me,
for the God of Love!”
By the light of the moon
One can barely see.
A pen is searched for,
A light is searched for.
Within all this searching,
I don't know what they’ll find,
But I do know that the door shut
With them both inside.

Revisiting this. Yep, I still love it.

Très jolie version...elle me fait penser à ce que faisait Marie Yacoub dans Malicorne...C'est beau et touchant.
