About this game:
RogueJack is a blend of old school dungeoning that utilizes BlackJack (or 21) as its battle system. As you level your character, new rules come into play-like multiple cards to choose from and chances those cards will will be face up or face down.
Thanks so much for playing! We're the developer and we actually fixed some issues based on this play. There should have been a status bar that gave you a little more info on potions that was off screen on your setup. Whoopsie. Glad you liked it!

@@Jonjon13Jonjon13 Yep. It was an interesting exercise in design... The two games share the same code base for the "game" but the Steam version has different UI elements and controls, is wide vs. tall, and a bunch of other little things. Levels are a bit bigger on Desktop as well to help fill the space.
This video sold me on this game. Love the idea! I'll be keeping an eye on you guys/gals in the future!

Looks like a really unique and cool game. I was wondering if the cards drawn are random, or if there is some sort of deck system where each card can only be drawn a set number of times per encounter.
If NL Tries is to be believed then 50% of this year's new releases are card based rougelites, and I'm here for it.
That's obviously a bogus figure.
It's closer to 80% of the games released this year.

@@R1ddle I feel like it's a combination of being genuinely good at certain games but also prone to lapses in focus on game. His lapses make this misplays everyone latches onto and creates his perception of badness, while the genuinely good half of things still gets him wins.
I definitely relate, anyways, often I find the parts he does well at something is harder than it seems when I play 'em, but he really does goof some of the easy aspects of games simultaneously.
for what its worth, you didn't need to click on the "pass" button, you just click anywhere that isn't the cards, at least from what the game said in the controls

i got this game on my phone a few months ago, it was fairly buggy but still extremely fun. glad to see NL playing it and how fleshed out it is now!
This reminds me of an app I have, Void Tyrant. NL would’ve been pogged out of his mind if it was on PC. Get this... it’s a roguelite blackjack deck building game. You attack via blackjack, and the difference determines how many times you hit, and your equipment determines any damage or status effects. Then you have a deck of cards that you build that helps you manipulate your blackjack, deal extra damage, or block incoming damage. I really loved it and I think NL would’ve too. Plus despite being f2p, it had an extremely generous business model, Ads only appeared if you decided to use 1 of 3 ghosts (Resurrect, Ghost, and Extra Loot) but you could buy each ghost for cheap (like $2ish) or all 3 at a discount to remove all ads from the game. Seriously, give it a try. It’s called Void Tyrant

This game is actually free on the app store for iphones (you can pay $2 to remove ads but the ads are entirely avoidable to begin with). I got the game yesterday and have been having a great time with it!
So many good card based games out already and it's only May. Thanks for bringing this and the others to my attention. I'm still glued to Monster Train.

Also! Northernlion, if you're looking for another game that pulls elements from solitaire and is also a roguelike, check out Poker Quest on Kongregate. It has a bunch of characters you can play as (provided you level up though.) recently got updated with better animations, since it's in early stages. Warning you though, don't expect to win easily. For all characters, the game is very difficult even on easy mode (which, only adds +50 health to all playable characters) , and even when you reload the page (kongregate.)
Still pretty fun though. Recommend you give it a go at some point.

"With rogue-like elements" applies whether or not the game is a true rogue-like, because rogue-likes have rogue-like elements.

Not even close. Sure, it's turn based and on a grid, but it has inter-run stuff and doesn't really have non-surface level RPG elements or complex interactions between game's sytems.
Roguelike purity tests are so tiring. It reduces the genre down to clones of a game that came out 40 years ago instead of the collection of core mechanics and philosophies that have made the roguelike genre so strong in so many implementations.
As someone who usually prefers roguelites (although I do enjoy DCSS and DF adventure mode) I think the "purity tests" are just a simple case of distinguishing between the actual specific roguelike genre and the more common roguelite genre, which are pretty different - without distinguishing between the two, fans of roguelikes wouldnt really have a way to find their preferred games.

Turns out it is also on mobile (figures). Didn't try it yet, but shops says "free, ads and microtransactions", so i assume it's "pay to remove ads" kind of deal.
UPD: Played it - it is well suited for mobile and controls are good

Yep. We did ads if you want to continue and unlock some later chests or $1.99 to buy it out. Never force you to watch one though...

I kinda really want to see him try to chat with that AI,maybe get self righteous about how his phrasing should be comprehensible or speculate on how it's DAE programmed. I know it's an old game, maybe there's a video where he plays it or at least talks about it? Or maybe we could get a 4 year late Northernlion Tries? I had this game on Mobile for a few weeks. Its pretty fun at first but the Random elements of the game can be really punishing and there is very little skill that will pull you out of a bad run. Showing a 12 and the Rat has 13. You can hit, Very likely Bust and take damage, or stay and be guaranteed damage. It all felt too random and not enough skill based for me. Especially in a rogue-like setting where the more you play, the better you should feel you are getting, as you learn the mechanics better. Since there is no progression mechanics that carry over, always starting with face down cards can end a run really fast really early.
Your level does carry over, so when you unlock 2 or 3 cards your character class stays that way unless you hard-reset the save game in settings. If not it's a bug and I'd like to fix it...

The controls on this game are a little wonky unless you're on a controller, but otherwise looks like it's an amazing game.
The whole being able to see the next card before you draw it I think kinda ruins the whole point of black jack doesn't it?
At first, it seems unbalanced, but the game does get harder and it’s more fun to know what’s coming some of the time that blindly rely on chance 100% of the time
