    You are, hands down, one of my favorite presenters on TH-cam. You have your supplies on hand, before you start. You don't stumble around your thoughts, when speaking. Your pace is excellent and your subject matter interesting and informative. I hope others learn about your channel as it is a real rarity among artist presenters.

    I'm 72 and recently spent 10wks in hospital. My best mate,my wife bought me a tin of watercolour pencils,my art shop gave me a heap of 300gsm w/paper and I was hooked. Hospital, doctor appointment,coffee shops out come the pencils, so convenient.

      Btw- art and music are the best medicines! And same! (Kinda) im younger but spent most of this summer/fall in the hospital and stuck in bed. I couldn't work on my polymer clay sculpting there, so I had brought my watercolor pencils and paper, watercolors, masking fluid then bought a bunch of colored pencils from the gift shop. When my dad came to visit I asked him to stop at the craft store and pick up a sketchbook and metallic watercolors. Previous hospital stays I've worked on crocheting, embroidering, drawing, but the watercolor this year had got me really into water colors. I'm still learning on cheaper materials before I invest on expensive quality materials (I did invest in good water color paper and masking fluid). Currently I've been working on the negative painting technique with watercolors, each one gets a little better✌🏼

      I gave you your 72nd "like" because of your age, I wish I could give another because your probably 73 now! Just a humorous way to say keep up your artistic interests, as you prove to aging folks out there that you're never too old to learn and can still have fun.

      yes, definately save the shavings, if you don't end up painting with them, I have an artist friend who saves ll; her shavings and puts them in a clear glass Christmas ball every year, they are surprisingly pretty on the tree I used to needlepoint and did the same with my thread trimmings

    I love your explanations! Could you please make a video about watercolor papers? Cold press, hard press, what's the difference, student grade, artist grade, cheap, expensive, which brands are better, thickness of the paper and when it is recommended to use thick vs. thin, I have so many doubts on that particular issue, I would like to know more on that. Thanks a lot for your videos, I just recently discovered them and they're so informative and relatable and I just love them!

    TIP for ya. U probably know this because of your exacto knife trick but its helped me a lot so I thought I'd share.
    I save the pencil shavings from my water color pencils. I have a bigger container that I mix all the color shavings into, and I sprinkle them on wet paper, or various other things. I also have a bunch of little containers to separate the diff. colored shavings. I use them to make my own paint pallets, or to use in mixed media. I do, separate the wood from the paint most of the time. I just sharpen them on a piece of paper, pull the wood shavings, and funnel the dried paint into whatever. But theres tons of things I use them for. And I save money that way. Thankyou for your video I thoroughly enjoyed it. Watercolor pencils are so satisfying :) sorry if my explanation is confusing.

      That's some really great information! I will totally take your idea and apply it. Thank you for sharing that with me - it wasn't confusing at all! I love to learn new ways to use older tools, so for me, the idea of using the shavings is classic! Cheers! :)

      @@maggiemae9099 oh yah for sure. I have a lot of art supplies but most of it's from gifts or on sale buys. Most of it's the low grade. I did use that technique and still do in a wide variety of things. But I got an actual sharp sharpener lol and when the wood comes out in curls I can just wipe off the color and toss the wood shavings. Its saved me a bit of time. Ty 😊

    You might want to try the Derwent Inktense pencils along with your other pencils. Inktense, once activated and then allowed to dry, won't lift if you use subsequent layers or add watercolor paint on top. I use both the regular watercolor pencils and Inktense. The wonderful thing about Derwent is that you can buy them singly, instead of buying an entire set. The other good thing about the inktense sticks is that you can use them as paints very easily. The reason this is important is that you can use a white Inktense stick to paint corrections and highlights and once it's dry, you can paint right over it without it lifting.

    I’ve been an artist and designer for over 40 yrs and I am really enjoying your videos. They are so well done, the narrative is informative and positive plus your artwork is very appealing. I’ve been in a creative slump since being laid off a year ago and selling my dream home but your videos have inspired me to get back to basics. I’m going to dig out my pens and pencils and explore my new neighbourhood.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dog Gonnit, I've unfortunately been on that side of the slump, as well. Working as a corporate designer in the late 1990s meant layoffs, dotbombs, and having to look for whatever work I could find. So, I'm sorry to hear about your layoff and hope you're doing well. Selling the dream home, well, I can relate there, as well. But, I have to say, my art and my music have always remained and continue to get me through even the roughest times. I'm happy to hear that you will revive your interest and your creative spirit. It may seem like a chore at times, but once you find that comfort zone, it will be great! Cheers and thank you so much for taking your time to watch. I'm sincerely grateful! :)

      M.D. Campbell Yes the late 90’s were tough. Personal computers made “everyone” a graphic designer. Now I’m getting age discrimination in the job hunt but I’m a clever woman with tons of art supplies and I also recently bought a keyboard (impulse buy) that I’m trying to learn. Yoga is helping immensely.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don Gonnit, once again, I understand that feeling! It's amazing how getting older clears the vision to the realities of getting older! lol! That's when we're forced to retool ourselves and become something new or different. I love the idea that you are immersing in yoga and got a keyboard. I was just telling my mom, yesterday, that I'd love to get a keyboard again. I used to adore playing piano and haven't had one in 10 years. You've inspired me to look into it... Cheers :)

    Sometimes I just dunk the pencil in water to make a bold saturated line. I also use watercolor pencils for guidelines or the underdrawing of a painting in watercolor or gouache when I don’t want the lines to show in the final painting. I like to do the rough sketch in red, and corrections in blue. Thanks for this video, Mark. It’s a great way to start the day. I missed the music and of course, the coffee break!

      @MDCampbell  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you, my friend! I was going to mention dipping the pencil in water, but for me it always ends up a big mess! LOL! I love the idea of using the pencils as an underdrawing to use with other mediums. Great suggestion and wish I'd included it. Always grateful for your support and time! Have a great weekend and happy Easter, if you celebrate it! Cheers! :)

      You shouldn't dip watercolor pencils, as it can get inside the pencil, rot it, or ruin the core.

    • @ubimelibiapes333
      @ubimelibiapes333 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And you can sharpen them with a Stanley or exacto knife to a chisel point, dip (not dunk) the point in water - and draw on black paper. Saturated and varied nice lines :)

      Dipping the pencils in water is asking for trouble, not to mention the expense of ruining a pricey pencil. I'm surprised you would recommend it.

    Thank you! Great side-by-side comparison, and excellent sun tips. Interestingly, I think I personally prefer the Derwent drawing over the Prismacolor even. Not that it really matters to me, since I’m not a pro, and I don’t have time to put into my art enough to justify another set of watercolor pencils. I have a set of Arteza watercolor pencils that a friend gave me for my birthday in 2020, and I have really enjoyed using them, especially to enhance my Zentangle art, since discovering that in 2021. If I do get another set, I suspect that they’ll be the Derwent Inktense, since I’ve really enjoyed the art I’ve seen in the Zentangle Waterfall using those.
    Thanks again!

      @MDCampbell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really love that you create Zentangle work. It's a remarkable program that inspired millions of people to indulge their creative spirit and find joy in the process of creating art. Love that! I also have the Arteza wc pencils and the Derwent Inktense, and both are terrific! My recommendation is use what you have and enjoy them thoroughly, because honestly, they're great for what they do. Thank you so much for taking your time with this video, but especially for your thoughtful feedback. That means so much! Stay well!! ~ Mark

  • @nerllybird
    @nerllybird 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi, this is a great video, really good to see the comparison. I am currently using Arteza watercolour pencils, and I also have Inktense pencils which I love. One point, though, is that Inktense aren't actually watercolour pencils. They are ink pencils and as such they don't behave in quite the same way as watercolour pencils. Having said that, I do use them both for flower studies - the Inktense are really vibrant, and although you can create more subtle effects, I find that there's not a lot of point in using them for a piece which consists solely of pale and delicate shades. Also, once the ink has been activated it is permanent and cannot be rewetted. This means that there are some effects you just can't achieve with them. I have seen people asking which are 'better', but it's not a direct comparison 😊

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, nerllybird. I have several brands at my side, including the Inktense 72, Arteza (Expert) 72, and Prismacolor Premier 36. They are all good for what they do, and for me, I don't see the need to explore other, more expensive brands at this point, as I just don't use the one's I have often enough. The Inktense are great for when I just want to have some fun or add a burst of vibrant color; the Arteza are good for just bringing along in a pencil case or on vacation; and the Prismacolors are the one's I would likely use to sketch out an illustration so I can draw out their colors once I begin applying water. I'd love to pick up a set of the Caran D'ache or FC Albert Durher, but their larger sets are a bit out of my price range. Thank you so much for the conversation and taking the time to watch and leave your thoughtful feedback! Stay well and I hope you're being super creative! ~ Mark

    Watercolor pencils are like you said very fun to use! I own the faber castel art grip, and they perfect, sometimes when i struggle to get fine details or some certain textures i will use the water soluble pencils preciseness is something that comes natural to these pencils, and textures on rocks trees, clothing or even adding a color outline. they are very transparent too so layering is very pleasant too. wonderful video Mark, I honestly didn't people struggle to get the point of water-soluble pencils.

    Nicely covered subject Mark! I like your cool texture and spatter techniques. I've used the scraped off pigment method a few times. I personally don't paint (do full paintings) with WC pencils but I do love them for linear detail and underdrawings. Also love the application of color to line and wash. Most WC pencils have lightfast issues, so another reason I steer away from them for finished paintings that might hang, but as you noted, so great for sketching and portability. The best of the best is Caran d'ache Museum Aquarelles and Faber Castell Albrecht Durers. Pretty good ratings even in the light fast category. One thing I loved about the Prismacolors was they match up by color and number with their wax based pencils and the colors really do seem to match on paper, a nice mixed media potential with that. Thanks for the video my friend! You're quickly heading to 10k subs. Awesome!

      Thank you, Steve! I appreciate your thoughts and watching. I'm the same and don't do much with them for finished work, but they're great for my sketching and studies. Cheers and hope you and your family had a wonderful Easter! :)

    I have the faber castell watercolor pencils. What I usually do is that I layer quite a lot. I layer the watercolor pencils with normal colored pencils and then finally add the water. The normal pencils basically help me add intricate details and subtle tones I don't want to get smudged away when I'm applying the water. It's a very useful technique!

    The sad thing is, I now have a ton of watercolor pencils, sooo many different sets. I started out buying a cheap set for $5.00 dollars, something called "The Fine Touch" a set of 12 regular (non-water color) which have different colors on each end, so 24 colors. Then I kept buying more expensive and more expensive, partly wanting more colors and partly also wanting more vibrant color but also I suspect secretly hoping that magic would happen and it was actually possible to "buy" drawing ability! uhuh. :D
    Anyway, it's interesting but that cheapest set is still one of my favorites. It's the set I always take when going anywhere.

    Hi Mark, you've basically covered all I could say about wc pencils! I've been working with them as mixed media items for years now and my faves are Derwent and Faber-Castell. For me layering over w/c washes produces the most control of high detail within small areas of contrast, it's fun! I've also branched to other brands. The ones I'm not crazy about I simply take with me on vacation/ location, so no worries about losing my quality paint supplies! Plus, there's no setup and I'll get a quick, fun impression for later on with any photos I might take. Sometimes the less you take, the more likely they'll get used/ less precious supplies-you're less fearful of messing up! Happy Easter :)

    I bought a full set of the Faber Castell Aquarelles when they were still being made. My experience with Faber Castell in the past prompted the purchase which I haven't regretted. The Derwents I bought were very limited in color range, but I liked how they behaved as colored pencils and as watercolor with what I thought was a good density of pigment.

    I really LOVE watercolor pencils. When I want a nice softer look I grab my Derwent Watercolor Pencils. I've found that, despite the rating of 'professional grade' the Prismacolor Watercolor is not something that works for me and I don't care for the look they give. It's my least favorite...I will not use them. However, I feel like there are three watercolor pencils that really should not be missed, especially in a watercolor pencil review. And ALL have superb light-fastness ratings. First and foremost are the Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolor pencils. These pencils are my absolute favorite because they dissolve completely, leaving no pencil lines behind. I love the quality as well as the many colors in addition to what you can mix...so endless possibilities here. The other two are by Caran d'Ache: the Supracolor Soft and the Museum Aquarelle. The Supracolor Soft are for all intensive purposes pretty comparable to the Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolor pencils...but you will always have personal choice between these two. I wish I owned the entire set of 120 in the Supracolors, but I do own enough of these and have used them in different paintings to know that they are fantastic! The nice thing about the Supracolors is that there are colors that come in this 120 set that are not found in the 120 set of the Albrecht Durers, and vise versa. The Museum Aquarelles are a much higher end watercolor pencil. These come in about 76 colors and I have around 24 of them (the Landscape set + 4 additional colors). These were a gift...and what a gift!!! You will be blown away with the quality and intensely rich pigmented color these give to your work.
    When I hear the question, What's the point of watercolor pencils?, it tends to frustrate me, as the person has either never used one before, has gotten a hold of a student grade watercolor pencil, or has had no direction on how these pencils can be used. Both the right pencils as well as good direction and a lot of experimenting are the antidote to this kind of thinking. If after that, they hate them...that's okay...it's their art work.
    However, most figure out these pencils help them do their work rather than being an interesting anomaly. I like to use the example of how a pastel artist uses pastel pencils. The pastel artist knows that there is only so much that their Pan Pastels and pastel sticks can do in regards to detail. So they reach for pastel pencils. Used together, these create gorgeous pieces. One isn't better than the other. They compliment each other. Using both watercolor paint along with watercolor pencils, this will give the artist more freedom and options, and all artists want as many options as they can get with the tools made for their particular art medium. The many things you can do with watercolor pencils (draw, paint, create an under-painting, etc.) are part of what make these type of pencils so special. Watercolor pencils are just that...a nice compliment for the watercolor artist in addition to being a stand alone medium. That's pretty amazing!

It helped much in biology like drawing cells and it's organelles cause it is so fine detail. My mom had given me watercolor pencils one day just out of the blue she had seen them at the store and got them for us to try.
    she teaches an adult workshop about enneagram and mindfulness and she likes to have coloring pages and things like that on the table during the workshop while she speaks to encourage creativity and “spiritual development”
    Most of the people aren’t there for an art class, and often don’t consider themselves to be creative. But I heard that they were very satisfied when they could simply color and when the water was added they could see the picture come to life.
    Anyways, I had tried using them as well, and although it took a bit of experimenting to be satisfied with the results, I enjoyed every second of the process. these are what introduced me to watercolors and it’s been four years now and I still paint every day. I think that they were a great tool to use when vein introduced to painting.
    Now that I have all my paints and my palettes I’ve made and all of these extra supplies I don’t do as many full pieces with them, but I do find that they were a godsend when I struggle with finding the perfect texture for hair, fur, wings, feathers or even grass.. things like that. My paint style tends to be very loose and sometimes I struggle with those types of textures getting too blurred and the pencils have been a great tool to use for that 😊

    Love the title of your video because I always asked myself - what's the point of water colorpencil? I never understood the pros of using these pencils over the traditional water-colours. To me, water-colour is quicker and the pigment seems to blend more seamlessly. I could still see faint lines underneath my water-colour pencil (maybe my skills are not there yet). Whatever these colorpencils can do ..... traditional water-colours can do them slightly more efficient. However, your point #3 - portability; is spot on!! (I didn't think of that) and point #4- draw now, water later. (very smart). Thank you for your video.

      I've been playing with watercolor and watercolor pencils for a while now- purchased at the same time. I bought artist loft wc pencils and Daniel Smith watercolor essentials. Both were purchased with the idea that I could circumvent the need for copic markers for illustration purposes. And honestly? There are a lot of reasons to pick one over the other, one of which being the separation between artist grade and student grade is much much less. You can get high quality student grade wc pencils for under 10 dollars. You can't hardly even get workable watercolors at that point. You also need less quality paper to get an "okay" level of effect. I also need far less materials, there is significantly less set up and tear down. While you may end up with a more efficient effect at the end (I have my doubts) it comes with a barrier of cost, time, and knowledge barrier. I'm not really seeing what's more efficient there.

    Some watercolor pencils, a sharpener, a graphite pencil, a waterproof black pen, a waterbrush, and an ordinary bottle of water is a versatile and compact kit with a watercolor sketch book. I sometimes use them after the watercolor phase to add emphasis with darks or whites/lights. I also use regular wax-based colored pencils (or a grease pencil) for a portable version of a mask, a bit here and there, that watercolor won't cover. You just can't remove it once down.

      Thank you so much, Artintention! When I was a young artist, I spent all my time drawing on my bed, the floor, the coffee table, and at the kitchen table. I always felt limited because my space was never secured. Then, one year, I went down into our basement and cleared out a small area. We had an old lamp and I got an old table from a neighbor, along with a folding chair. That became my studio all through high school, and despite having no windows nearby, it was perfect! I recommend the watercolor pencils to anyone interested, but will say that I do not use mine on a regular basis, and the student grade products I bought years ago, I almost never use now. OMG thank you so much for doing this video on watercolour pencils. I have a Derwent wooden box that contains Derwent watercolour pencils, paper for watercolour, paint brush, etc. I've had the box for years, but never used it because I didn't know how.
    I have normal Derwent pencils that I recommend anyone to use.
    PS: When I was a kid (80's, 90's) I won awards for my artwork, and I had some of my drawings turned into Christmas cards (using Derwent pencils). My family became homeless for other reasons, I couldn't do art for many years. When I became an adult I felt like a failure. The level of art I was good at as a child, is now considered basic for an adult. My therapist told me I should get back into doing art. Release my emotions into my art. A few weeks ago I was stuck at what type of art style suits me. I came across your channel. It may sound silly but I find listening to your videos very therapeutic. Im also learning a lot. I binge watch your channel at around 2am in my country. It's a time when everything else is quite. It was funny yesterday morning I watched a video you did about doing art when feeling sad/depressed. You said something in your video about you not being a therapist/psychologist. It made me wonder do other people find listening to you therapeutic too?

    I like to draw out the basic shape of my subject with hatch marks then dab the water on with my brush and keep some of the texture from the hatching in order to give it a more natural look.

    Very interesting to learn the differences between the pencils. I use them for coloring in coloring books. I'd like to portability of them. I use a water brush with him on the go. My daughter's ready to have a baby so I have the durwent pencils and coloring books to work in since we're going to be sitting quite a bit. I don't have an artistic bone in my body and coloring books is something I could do. I'm trying to learn the rest, like shading.

    Great video and comparison! I purchased cheap art supply store water color pencils and didn't like the fact they could be reactivated with water. This drew me to Derwent Inktense pencils that I could use with wet medium without reactivation on art journal stuff. I can use Prismacolor regular color pencils with them very nicely. Now I'm definitely going to look into the Prismacolor watercolor pencils, I didn't know they were so highly pigmented! I love your videos, thank you so much! ♡♡♡

    If you stick the lead of a watercolor pencil in water, it starts to soften up and when you put it on the paper, it just lets go of all of its pigments (but its a bit slow of a process). Looks really cool, I used to do that to my colors when I was younger, was a cool way to get yourself a tattoo that you can wash off in like 2 seconds.

      Love the idea of a DIY tattoo! My kids would've loved that when they were young... they used Sharpies. ugh! lol! But this is a great "tip!" (sorry, art pun!) Thank you for sharing and for your kind feedback! Cheers! :)

    Very helpful. I’ve been using watercolor pens and pencils for about one year. I have many more years of experience with actual watercolor paint. I really like them even if it does feel like cheating a little bit. Great video. Thanks!!

    Nice review and demo. I have the Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer pencils and they are great. I also have the Inktense pencils - they are different from regular watercolor pencils in that a layer becomes permanent after it dries. They behave more like permanent ink in this respect.
