    I honestly think it would be a good idea to of had Hoover be a ‘Failed Lisa’. Meaning that she was at one point just like Lisa, only for her morale to get destroyed by time and other issues, sending her on a downward spiral.

    • @TheRealJims
      @TheRealJims  2 ปีที่แล้ว +268

      Love this idea. It would make so much sense and would be a different spin on how Edna K came to be

    • @jubisisters
      @jubisisters 2 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      Would be good if an episode exploring this ended with her realizing that her own callousness and even rivalry with Lisa wasn't a helpful dose of reality but clipping her wings, almost guaranteeing that Lisa will end up more like Hoover as an adult. Maybe she even apologizes to Lisa for her unprofessional behavior, and indicates that in the future she will lean harder towards indifference than spite, so as to stop getting in the way of Lisa's development. On the other hand, Lisa's characteristic wisdom could lead her to say that she *does* appreciate having Miss Hoover for a teacher, because it has encourages her to be self-reliant in learning and has tested her determination to learn in the face of a world which would allow her to stagnate.
      Either way, love this angle. I mean, it's "Gifted Kid Syndrome", innit? That'd be a good topic to explore with these characters just in general.

    • @SabreVatour
      @SabreVatour 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That's a really good idea. I like the dark reflection of Lisa being her backstory, they should have done something like that. Also, I could have sworn she lived next to the VanHoutens, so I'm not sure where the apartment at the bottom of the hill came from.

    Alright, so this is almost certainly TOO deep a cut, but in one of the Simpsons comics, Lisa tries to reignite Ms Hoover’s love of teaching, and she ends up causing her to realise that she never really loved teaching, she loved being apathetic towards teaching. So she ends up thanking Lisa for helping her remember how fun it is to not give a shit about her job.
    This is almost certainly far too obscure for Simpsons Histories, but I’ve always been fascinated by that one girl in Bart’s class with the green glasses. It’s such a weird ‘early Simpsons’ design and yet she hasn’t really been updated because she has no real stories or anything. Maybe an episode tracking various background characters might be interesting? I’m curious how long some unique designs have lasted.

    • @pickyphysicsstudent201
      @pickyphysicsstudent201 2 ปีที่แล้ว +96

      I'd like to see that unique reoccuring background characters episode. The extra drunks at Moe's bar, Power Plant employees, Oldfolks senior citizens, etc. Then again each disussion will become which character replaced the need for the all extras (i.e Milhouse replacing the other 4th graders).

    I think it's neat that Miss Hoover goes unexplained. It's like with real teachers, some of them you get to know more personally and even get to talk with them outside of school. Some others are just... Kinda there. A mysterious question mark. It's a constant that not only rings true in america, it rings true worldwide.

    • @TheRealJims
      @TheRealJims  2 ปีที่แล้ว +126

      Good point. Watching the video back after upload, I questioned whether it's more realistic to let Hoover be unexplained. Maybe we don't need to understand the "why" of everyone and she can just be a simple representation of that archetype

    • @RubyBlueUwU
      @RubyBlueUwU 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I agree honestly, it feels very much like the family’s perspective, Krabapple becomes integral to the family because she always feels something for her job, whether she’s frustrated with Bart or genuinely caring for him, she always has *feelings* about it which would translate to her being more involved, but Hoover is apathetic and teaches their less “problematic” child, she’s barely involved, so there’s no reason they’d really know much if anything about her as a person. Krabapple also overshares a lot, which sets the scene easier for us to connect with her more, but Hoover doesn’t even really care enough to vent to the kids, she just clocks in and clocks out, and she doesn’t exist to the family outside of that so…she doesn’t really exist to us.

    Miss Hoover has long fascinated me as a character. She's one of the fairly prominent school characters we know so little about, yet she's such an excellent portrayal of the careworn, burned-out teachers that are sadly such a part of American public school life. It would be interesting to see a little more of her, maybe some deeper explanation of her inner life.

      Wolfcastle would be specifically interesting subject for a video because of the odd way the show's floating timeline affects him. The real life Arnold Schwarzenegger has aged 30 years and had huge changes in his career (from a B movie actor to a serious politician) while Wolfcastle as a Simpsons character can't age but is still supposed to be a direct parody of Schwarzenegger.

    I always thought a good reason for Miss Hoover being so jaded towards her job is because of Springfield Elementary and how absolutely poor it is as a school. It's no secret that the budget of the school and the management in general is pretty bad, and doesn't lend itself to good teaching. I've always liked the idea that Miss Hoover really did genuinely love teaching, but the constant Ralph Wiggums flying through her classroom year after year due to the school being so ridiculously shit slowly chipped away at her passion until she just can't be bothered. She's so ready to go on strike because it might just give her the slightest chance of having a better classroom. She's so ready to read a book in class or read the answer's off a teacher's guide because, well, what's the point? No matter what she does, there'll be another Ralph around the corner thanks to the school.
    Would probably lend itself to a good nuanced story about the school. idk

    They both don't like their job, but Edna overshares that while telling a story while Elizabeth just apatetically tells the class to wait for the bell when they finish.
    And like, Edna still took pleasure on baiting and switching the kids with the test, while Hoover just did the assignment.

For a main character she's had so much less times when she's been relevent to the plot than your Moe's and your Skinner's, and possibly not even as many as Santa's Little Helper. Yet her highlights are so good, as she's gunned down the Springfield mob, might just be smarter than Lisa, defeated the scourge of Objectivist thinking, and she did shoot Mr. Burns after all.

    Good vid as always! Lindsey Naegle for Simpsons Histories next? I think it’s interesting how she kind of evolved out of nameless, similarly voiced ‘executive-type woman’ one-off characters that were used for awhile before we had one definitive named character for that kind of role. Also just in general I think it’d be interesting to look at characters introduced closer to halfway through the show’s run~

    Neat to know that Hoover finally got a spotlight episode in the HD era. Disappointing to know it didn't add any depth to her. It's always felt strange to me that Edna became such a prominent character in the show, and Hoover kinda stagnated in the C-listers. (though I guess the Maggie Roswell situation helps explain that) With any luck, we'll see more use of her going forward and she'll start to evolve more as a character.
    As for who to see in the next Simpsons Histories video, I'm going to again suggest Eddie and Lou.
    2 characters that initially were basically permanently linked with each other (ala Richard and Lewis, Lenny and Carl, etc) but now in the modern era, I genuinely can't think of the last time I have even seen Eddie appear in an episode as anything more than a background character, and any police scenes nowadays seem to just involve Lou and Wiggum. I can't help but wonder, what it was about Eddie that made him fade into the background and what made the writers decide to have Lou slowly shift towards being Wiggum's snarky sidekick.

    Honestly Miss Hoover is one of my favourite Simpsons characters out of how purely relatable she is. She has a complete sense of apathy and basically zero passion for her job but at the same time knowing what she deals with on a day to day basis you can hardly really blame her. She's also fairly attractive for a simpsons character and honestly would seem like a cool person to hang out with if you shared a similar outlook. I have to admit she also reminds me of a teacher I had in high school who I sort of had a crush on, they dressed very similarly and was a miss as well which probably colours my perception somewhat.

    Likely influenced by the shot of his Lego version in the credits, I always found Mr Largo quite enigmatic as a kid. He seems like he never really became the character that the show initially thought he'd grow into. He even gets his own bit in the opening sequence. I think he'd be a good subject to focus on, though I have no idea what the show's done with him since the early 2000s.

    Great video, Jims! I've always been fascinated by the characters that barely ever get used, even for background roles, but are mentioned throughout the series (ie: Comptroller Atkins, Scott Christian, Dave Shutton, The Winfields, etc.) Even characters like Charlie who is mainly a background character, but gets his own consistent name, voice, job, and relationships. I'd love to see a Simpsons histories about a few of these characters all wrapped up together.

    I personally head cannon that Hoover was once a bright overachiever like Lisa, but her life didn't go how she wanted and she wound up with a teaching job she hates. So when she brushes Lisa off she's subconsciously trying to lessen what she sees as Lisa's inevitable disappointment and misery, since that's what happened to her.

    Thank you so much for this video! There is nothing better than starting the day with new content from you 💖
    An interesting fun fact about her is that in LATAM it was really common for the translators to change the name of the characters either to make them more fitting with our culture or just because they wanted and in this case Hoover's last name was "Stricter" (as in strict) for a very long time which is weird because that's not a word i would use to describe her character (or maybe that was the joke who knows), she also had a very old sounding voice for most of her early-mid appearances despite looking younger than most of other teachers

He started out as an average child, became a bit estranged, and then devolved into what we always see of him. Not to mention that Season 1 has 2 Ralphs: 1 resembling his modern incarnation and one that was explicitly called in the DVD commemtary for Moaning Lisa.

      Sarah Wiggum would pretty much be her spotlight episode she finally got in s32 and that's it. Manjula I feel would be depressing. This bright attractive woman in her first appearance, who then gets eight kids and an unfaithful husband who she gets incredibly, incredibly bitter about. Reasonable for her to do so but it doesn't exactly make her a 'fun' character to watch.

    Wiggum would also be an interesting pick, I noticed he's much more serious in the earlier seasons, I wonder exactly when he became the goof we know today and how him being Ralph's father changed him.

    I had a teacher like Ms. Hoover. Her name was Mrs. Andersen. She treated all of the smart children in her class like small adults. More like rivals than children she could/should inspire. It's been 30 years and she's one of the few teachers I remember and for all the wrong reasons. Maybe as a fully grown middle aged adult I can appraise Ms. Hoover separately from my long held negativity. I'm certainly inspired to try at least.

    I stand by my earlier nomination of Skinner, but I humbly request a 'Simpsons mysteries' on it if you can swing it since I am most interested in what kind of continuity (if any) can be gleaned from those sporadic extremely dark jokes. If there isn't enough for a whole mysteries episode, I would settle for a 'chapter' on it in a histories episode instead.

      yeah, that too. That may lend some credence to the idea of him being a super dark character deep down. But for me the most interesting thing is that since I've been watching random episodes, Skinner (as we know him) just randomly tosses some REALLY dark subtext in a conversation and I'm curious exactly what it all adds up to. At first, I was like "haha he did a dark thing once maybe" but he does it way more than I realized and it's both terrifying and fascinating.
