    Barney no longer being Homer's best friend, even in flashbacks, always pained me. Poor Barney.

      @rheubarbarum5423 4 ปีที่แล้ว +263

      Here was moment in the one of recent seasons, when Abe reminisces times of Homer's childhood, in which he hasn't any actual friends, so Abe had paid to two boys, Lenny and Carl, to play with him (those floozies!), and it remained to modern days (them being friends, not interacting for money). But, notes he, Barney was one he got for free. Retconning of all previous backstory(-ies) and rather mean joke, but it's still nice and encapsulates Barney's status as his genuine friend.

    • @justincoleman3805

      There is no retconning on The Simpsons. It’s reality is fluid.

    My favourite Barney gag is when Moe throws him out the front door and he appears back in the bar in a completely neutral position. He not only was chucked out and denied physics and teleported back in, he doesn't even seem bothered by it.

    The show treated him like we treat real alcoholics. We laughed at his bizarre dialogue and situations, then we cared enough to give an attempt to help him clean up and have a better life, then they tragically revert back to their alcoholism, and we couldn't be bothered to care again and eventually forgot about him.

      @yeahSOwhat that's not true, I think it's quite the struggle on both sides, at some point you can't put your life on hold for someone who won't try to help themselves. Plenty of people stick around after the first try, but sometimes as much support as you give someone, if they aren't going to help themselves you can't either. It's a very broad spectrum of people and situations, it's no one's fault specifically, it's not people being dumb, that is a dumb and immature view of it.

      This is true, we even did this with an Uncle on my mom's side, were really happy when he stopped drinking for a bit or was only having one beer a day at most and no hard stuff but were really pissed off when he went back on beer only quite hard and we all gave up on helping him. He still is able to manage a building or two that are house style apartments and only the lower end type people rent from one of them of he still owns that one, the other is close to where he lives in his house so they respect him more. He is a functional Drunk and that is worse then most other types.

  • @promontorium
    @promontorium 3 ปีที่แล้ว +308

    I think they should stick with the dynamic of him randomly sober in some episodes, drunk in others. Makes it more realistic, and enables him to be put in more situations. Addicts often have a manic attraction when trying to get off their addiction, when Barney is sober he could be interested in any number of alternative things. That's where the coffee trope comes from, it's real life.

    • @xxxccc4753
      @xxxccc4753 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      The concept of him sobering up only to relapse again and again is such a good idea. I wish the writers would have settled for that.
      The best part about Barney was always the stark contrast between his personality when he was sober and when he was drunk.

    My older brother had all the potential in the world, started binge-drinking in college, died of alcohol poisoning by age 30. Barney as a tragic figure hits home for me. *Hard.* The state of his apartment is realistic for someone losing himself in the bottom of a bottle - if anything his apartment is cleaner than our basement was. Also, his bouncing back and forth on sobriety, disturbingly realistic.

    Reverend Timothy Lovejoy!
    The writers seemed to flip his characterization more than once.
    At some points, he's played straight as a Devoted Minister, leading social causes with an Evangelical leaning, is the designated leader (or 2nd in command) of the religious citizenry of Springfield, and occasionally acts as a deus ex machina that saves the 3rd act with a genuine miracle.
    Other times, he's portrayed as Intolerant of his Faith, secretly hating Ned Flanders, neglects his Clergy responsibility, and voices several atheistic jokes
    (Such as calling the Bible a 2000 page sleeping pill in the episode when Lisa converts to Buddhism). A personal favorite depiction of the character.
    And then we have him being simultaneously desperate to do better at his job, have a secret life filled with interests at odds with Evangelical Christianity, feature episodes where he's shown to be working on improving his marriage/family life, give him exchanges with The Parson, etc.
    In short: Rev. Lovejoy has had a lot going for him throughout the show, and is often overlooked.
    He deserves a spotlight.
    Thank you for reading this essay.

    That scene where Barney cant kill Moe because he already got him a hat is the closest I've ever seen the simpsons drift into being futurama and I love it. It has a lot of that "i tried to kill myself in a suicide booth because I was too depressed from making suicide booths" dark humor feel to it, and it also has the group of single friends that come together as a family dynamic which is the core of what separates futurama's sitcom style from most

    Barney's fondness for the Simpsons' kids is my favourite facet of his character. Shoulder-carrying Bart to the dog track, rescuing Maggie, and doing his best to offer advice to the kids when Homer couldn't, even when he was otherwise blind drunk.
    To me it adds just another layer of bittersweet tragedy to his character. Is he so sweet on his best friend's kids because he was unable to have children of his own? Is it another clue that Barney may actually have been a better man and a better father than Homer if not for his alcohol dependency? I love that dynamic in Barney and I want to see more.

    I'd actually like to see Moe Szyslak done. He has such a wide history, doen so much, like being a boxer, have so much illegal stuff in his bar basement, a few eps all about unsuccessfully flirting with Marge. Also how Moe treats Barney differently to Lenny and Carl and then differently again to Homer. Also they even tried a "good looking Moe" in an ep which I think the results of that were mixed.
    The writers tried to make Moe clean his act up, with things like the restaurant but in the end it always seems to fail and he ends up as the stereotypical barman of the worst pub in town. I think the writers making Moe not like the beer he serves so he rarely drinks anything and when he does Moe always complains about how $#@! it tastes.
    Moe is not underappreciated, but he does have an up and down history with moments the writers tried to clean up his image but it always ended up the same way, back in the bar. Almost like the writers wanted his stories always resolved in a single ep, so nothing ever carried over so, Homer, Carl, Lenny and Barney always had the same bar to go back to, to use in their storylines.

      There's always this weird extremity shift with Moe, where he keeps shifting back and forth between a loathesome dirtbag or utterly sympathetic. Like he's not like Kirk where he's consistently pitiful but always self sabotages his own likability. He tends to take both worlds.

      Ugh, you saying that is so true, and brings back the sting I felt when South Park squandered the whole "Cartman/Heidi" angle.
      I really wish they'd left them together. It would have given Cartman a whole new depth beyond "Haha, look at the funny racist kid that made another kid eat his parents!"
      They didn't even have to change him really. Have him be the same old Cartman, EXCEPT with Heidi. Have them truly in love like they were. Have him be incredibly sweet to Heidi anytime they were around.
      But no, first they turn Heidi into Cartman, then they break up, and it's right back to the status quo.
      They kind of brought it back with the Post COVID special, where he turned out as a loving husband and father, a devout Jew, and a nice guy, but we all know how that ended up. Le sigh.

    Not too long ago, the channel Simpsons Hub had a poll that showed up on my TH-cam feed called “Who’s Homer’s Biggest Friend?” which had Moe win over Barney, Lenny and Carl. This is where I noticed that Barney got significantly less screentime and episodes focused on him as the seasons go on; which is why I think Moe took first place, due to him just keep getting more and more episodes focused on him while Barney is just quietly shunted into the background to be ignored and unacknowledged.
    An example I want to bring up is the Season 21 episode “The Saga of Carl”, the episode where Carl is revealed to have been raised in Iceland by his adoptive parents, where the focus of the episode is that Homer, Lenny, Carl and Moe are all a friend group and the conflict of the episode is that Carl betrayed them by stealing their shared winnings from the lottery and saying he could do so because they’re not real friends. I bring up this episode because I feel like Barney is part of their friend group and should have been in the episode.
    Though, this video reminded me that this actually started seasons earlier. The earliest seasons had firmly established that Barney was Homer’s best friend, with flashbacks showing that their friendship goes all the way back to during their time in high school. Later seasons then have flashbacks which establish that Homer, Lenny, Carl and Moe were friends all the way back when he was 10 and 12-years old (Season 15 “The Way We Weren’t” and Season 13 “The Blunder Years” respectively) and episodes more-or-less maintain that Homer’s usual friend group is Lenny, Carl and Moe at Moe’s Tavern and just Lenny and Carl at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant.
    Though, I didn’t know about the episode where Homer and Moe reform the Pin Pals with Lenny, Carl and Barney (with Moe playing coach instead of an active player and replacing Otto and Apu). And it looks like it sticked because an episode in a later season had them play competitive bowling again in the episode where Carl gets a girlfriend.

    We had a "Barney" in my family. No matter what anyone tried to do for him he just got worse and worse. Eventually he was no longer functional with his drinking and he became homeless. He couldn't live with any of us anymore because he became violent when drunk, which was nearly all the time. About a year into homelessness he found a new mistress, heroin. Our "Barney" died from AIDS in 1994. I know that's really dark, but I see a lot of comments stating that the Simpsons gave up on him. No. Barney gave up on himself.
