Do you have any money saving tips when it comes to hamsters? I hope this video was able to give others some ideas. It really is sad when I hear someone say they can’t afford to do something that their pet requires. There are many ways to give them what they provide and if even the cheapest options aren’t an option for you I honestly would say to not get one until you do have the funds for one as it’s not fair at all to the animal.
Price match!!! I know for sure PetSmart and Petco do this, and almost always the price of the item I’m buying is cheaper online. All you have to do is pull up the item on their website (make sure it’s the exact product and size) and show the cashier and they will mark the price down to whatever it is online. This has helped me save so so so much money, I hope it can help someone else 😊🐹
I know this was a year ago, but I bought one today and realized how stupid they are, so tomorrow I’m gonna get a bin and DIY a good, natural, hamster enclosure.

Victoria, You should do a reacting to hamsters being classroom pets because my teacher had a hamster and she had a tiny tales and I told her about your channel and she made a bin cage so I think you should do something like you reacting to our hamster cages!!!
Yes, it's very sad how hamsters are kept as classroom pets because they're almost always kept in tiny cages, without a good diet or bedding, or toys, and the little kids don't know how to handle them. Also a lot of the time they're kept together which might be the worst out of all the things.
I found a 10$ bin at my store that has 608 inches of floor space! 😊 I’m using it as a travel cage since I’m going on a vacation to my cabin in the spring
I had a terrible cage for my hamster by mistake, and you helped me. Now my hamster, Alex, is in a much better cage with a homemade platform and a much much bigger enclosure which he loves so much!!
Same, I had a friend who used to have hamsters, and supposedly knew all about them but had pretty much just read Petsmart's care guide. My hammy had to live for a whole month in two tiny cages I had gotten from my friend's old hamsters. Luckily I spent that month researching hamsters, and disproving the information she had told me. Hammy is now happily living in a bin cage thanks to great hamster sites and youtubers!
After a while I moved them to an ikea Deltof, Alex and Birch separated in the cage lived well over 2 years. Alex passed away not too long ago, but Birch who was caught by the cat twice is still going strong.
Mom - Ok, I'm going to get you a hamster but you must have perfect grades, perfect hammy care, and be really well behaved. Me - Yes! Mom - Keep in mind I'm not going to even touch this hamster. Me - Ok. *About 1 week later when the hamster is tamed* Me - walks into the room. Mom - Oh I love you so so much Pumpkin!
Hahaha same my mom was like "You must take care of the hamster, pay for everything, and I will NOT clean the cage or deal with the hamster at all" Then one week later I walk in on her with my hamster playing with him and a bunch of cardboard tubes and whispering "You are mine and I love you..."
We inherited a syrian hamster from my brother-in-law's children and thanks to you it's being looked after much better than it was before. It's been moved to a big enclosure and receiving the right bedding and a much more natural environment to exist in and also my 6 year old daughter is learning the correct way to look after and handle a pet. Your videos are clear, professional and fun. Thank you for being one of the more important channels on youtube!
I just saw this video this morning, and went to the store! I got my hamster Balboa a new cage that is 608 sq inches! Looking at my old critter trail just breaks my heart thinking that I used to have him in it 😥 my overall cost for everything needed was only $18! Thank you so much!
The paper bedding is extremely cheap.. 30 dollors for 99L.. I wish I can get it in Malaysia.. After converting rate just RM130+. I'm hunger for the paper bedding.
check out shopee! theres a seller that sells a 60L bag of hemp bedding for rm90, a lil cheaper than the kaytee aspen/clean &cozy (which they also sell). theres also another seller that sells a 10L bag of aspen for rm10 too, so easily get 100L for rm100. save up to buy the bedding, it'll be worth it in the long run. harap ni dpt tolong awk!
Takes me 2-$20 bags of off brand paper bedding to clean my whole enclosure with 8-10 inches of bedding depth. My baby loves to burrow.. for me bedding is the most expensive expense for my hamster. Sometimes I mix aspen with my paper bedding but my hammy isn’t a fan of aspen she much rather just the paper bedding
Victoria Raechel Kind of like what you did for reacting to our hamster cages. Ask for a picture and see if they meet the requirements and give your feedback. (Most of them don’t☹️) And it could be like a little message that you don’t believe that people should keep hamsters and classroom pets.
Ok so we did everything wrong! A) impulse purchased hamster B) at a pet store C) bought the tiny tales castle for him on clearance D) got him a ball and totally stressed him out with it E) tried to handle him the first day and got bit, as deserved F) tiny layer of bedding. So, it’s six days later and I’ve binged your channel and a few others as well. I am totally in love with this hamster and so are the kids. So I’ve already made him a DIY bin cage with very deep bedding and some safe tunnels and caves, foraging food, and a sand bath. I connected it to his existing cage hoping that will enable us to keep the one week of acclimation he’s already got. Don’t want to stress him more. He’s getting used to coming to us for a treat and showing us his preferences. He’s very happy with the much deeper layer of bedding in his castle, and burrows and forages. He hasn’t found the bin cage though, he found the tunnel but wasn’t brave enough to go through it yet. It’s not been a whole day. So I have two questions! 1) if I have a connected cage with water do all other cages have to have water? 2) is there a stress free way to introduce him to the bin cage or coax him through the tunnels? Thanks!
He did figure it out! It took a couple of days. Now he’s a pro at going back and forth. He has a sand bath and a few burrows in the bin cage, lots of places to forage and hide, a little nook he stores his seeds in. I offer fresh food daily in the cage above and he uses his wheel a lot, sometimes sleeps there but seems to be changing his sleeping burrow these days like he hasn’t found a favorite spot.
I'm sad! When my hamster was alive my mom would MAKE me clean her cage once a week, or I was grounded from screens. I am getting a new hamster soon, thanks for the advice. :)
I have a Christmas tree holder bin that is six feet long by 3 feet wide and right after Christmas it was on sale for about ten or fifteen dollars. Just another suggestion for people wanting to get a large, cheap, enclosure.
Petco had a tank sale a couple weeks ago, I got a 36”X18” for half off! Then there are mesh lids on amazon for $23! So for less than $100, I got a big glass tank for “my son’s” hamster (It will be his, but I’ll be doing the majority of the work as he is turning 5)
A lot of the times i find that it can actually be more expensive to do it the wrong way than doing it the right way. Especially when you purchase a crittertrail "kit" where you get everything but it breaks so you have to get new stuff anyways. Those are 30 to 50 bucks. When a bin is about 20 to 30, then you are just buying the regular supplies. You can get popsicle stick from the dollar store, i use aspen bedding and paper mix, with a little hay too. Also petsmart price matches, so they have the 8 inch and 12 in comfort wheels/silent spinners, pricematch those suckers. I pay like 4 bucks for an 8 inch comfort wheel. If you know how to beat the system it can be super cheap and probably cheaper than doing it the wrong way. Not sponsored, but people who like carefresh, sign up for club carefresh, they give you 5 dollar off coupons, sign up for petco's program and REGISTER YOUR PETS BIRTHDAY. they give you a FREE toy or treat(under 4 dollars) and petsmarts treats, you get points back, and the treats price on items, petsmart also sends coupons for your pets birthdays. During halloween, look in target and walmart. They have these cute candy dishes that are perfect for hides, and they are 4 dollars? So yeah, there is a ton of ways to get your stuff super cheap. Fight the power and make those petstore cringe mwahahaha.
Ive been wanting a hamster for a while now and now im very tempted after watching your videos. I had no idea they needed so much space and im glad I stumbled across you before I adopted one. I absolutely LOVE your videos and how informative you are, thank you!
You should make a video "reacting to try not to laugh hamster videos". They're all full of bad hamster care and a lot of people laugh at those and I think someone like you should make a video on that. A lot of them are problematic
For bedding, if you buy bedding when it is on sale it is way cheaper. It seems like a different type of bedding is always on sale so buy the sale bedding (as long as it is safe)
I just got a male syrian hamster a week ago and is in a pets at home large cage witch I’ve now realised is too small from watching your videos. I am think of moving him into a bin tub. Thank you for this whole video it’s really helped me!
honestly, u make owning a hanster so much easier, im 13 years old and i just got a hamster around a month ago. shes a baby chinese dwarf hamster and i love her so much! however, i bought a low quality cage not knowing the facts i know now because of you!!!! i figured out ways to afford being a hamster owner and u helped me so so much! im getting a nice affordable cage for her soon! and i love your videos so much. i just want you to know how much i appreciate your videos.❤️❤️
something i recently discovered that’s perfect for hamsters, especially dwarves: the walmart school supply bins with all the holes in them. I got the smaller one, i can link it too but it doubles as a hide and my djungarian loves to go through the holes, and to climb up it!! it also doubles as a hide, and I got it for $1!
I own a hamster, I am 11 years old and once the government lets us go to stores and stuff, I’m gonna get a bin cage!!! :) I do have a Critter tales cage right now... but my hamster is out 80% of the time. He has only been in the cage for a month so he should be fine for now. But I promise to give him the best cage in the world! It may take some time to save up, but I will get there. ♥️🐹
I love how when you say something wrong you don’t do a retake and just go with the flow I’m currently researching about hamsters and I’m planning to get one and your videos are lots of help thanks
I bought myself a Syrian hamster a couple weeks ago and I've been watching your videos a lot. I love how you explain everything. It helped me out so much. THANK YOU!
Guess what? I got a hamster because of you! He is a cute brown Syrian with a white belly and I named him Ginger. I gave him the prevue 528 cage and the correct size wheel. It’s 9 inches for now but I have an 11 inch he is still a baby. And I hav the same bedding as you! I gave him 2 days without me touching him. Then yesterday I started taking him. He was grooming in my hand! I picked him up three times without him biting me! I’m so happy and it’s all because of you! ❤️😁🤗
I half clean my hamsters cage every month and fully clean her cage every 3 months and I still keep a bag of her old bedding to put in her cage after I fully clean it
thank you so much a hamster came into my care about a month ago she was only going to stay with me for a week or two but after i saw the care that her previous owner gave to her i talked the owner into letting me keep her and i am now trying to find cheap ways to give her a better life first step is a proper cage
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO. I NEEDED THIS SOOOOO BADLY, AND THANK YOU FOR SAY THAT YOU COULD GET STUFF FROM DOLLAR STORES. YOU ARE SOOOOOOOOOO HELPFUL I DIDN'T EVEN THINK OF DOLLAR STORES.
It's actually my first time getting a pet and I'm getting a hamster! My parents are on a budget because they are saving for a bigger house this helped alot! Tysm!
Walmart and Amazon seem to have hamster products that are cheeper than pet stores. Also see if your pet store price matches because price matching can save you a lot of money
Thank you for making this. I feel that hamsters are generally pretty cheap to keep over their lifetime, however vet bills are so important, and to set them up properly can be pricey. I think people underestimate these things so often. I spent more setting my boy up than I think I have over the last 13 months since I got him, and he doesn’t have too much in terms of DIY, but his sand bath was an oven dish for £1, and his water and food bowls were shallow nibble dishes that I got a pack of 3 for £1. His freshies are foods that we buy for ourselves and cut him a slice or two once or twice a week, and so many stores sell bulk items of dried petals and buds for forage for cheap. Also, you can many many dried tea mixes in bulk, as long as you check that they are natural, and the individual ingredients are safe for hammies, they are often cheaper to buy than forage mixes. Just stay away from the citrus mixes, and check the ingredients thoroughly. My boy loves the rose mixes, and the pure rose tea mixes in bulk are much, much cheaper than the special packs in pet stores.
My country is a big exporter of wine and as a result there are many people who will practically give you tons of sturdy LARGE wooden wine boxes for free!! These are absolutely amazing and can be used as digboxes or multichamber hideouts with very little modifications. Put some dowels on them and they can double as platforms too! The best thing you can do is be creative and find alternatives and sources close to you!! It will make your cage setup cheaper and unique!!
I'm totally going to make a new hamster cage! The cage I have currently is a critter trail cage for my syrian hamster and I feel so bad for keeping her in it. This video was very helpful!
When my hamster passed my parents kept the enclosure Now im happy because two years later with more research and experience Im gettin myself a hamster today🥴
Hi Victoria! For my past 2 hamsters I have had tiny critter trails because I thought they were fine. Thanks to you and munchie I have a new prevue 528 coming tomorrow. I can’t thank you enough for all your videos!!!
I got my girl Pixel a bin cage today. 595 sq inches. Spent all day at Walmart with my tape measure and calculator measuring their bins. My mum was bored, like a kid she kept saying "are you done yet?" lol Still need to get her sand and velcro for the water bottle (using a dish atm), but I'm thrilled with her new setup. All thanks to your videos!!
Fun fact:If you get an eggcrate and place foods in random bits of it,its way more fun for hamsters to find and eat their food♡ Edit:Btw I mean the cardboard eggcrates!☆☆
Omg! I didn't know you didn't have to clean your hamster's enclosure once a week! Many sites say to do so once a week and to be honest I've had my doubts about it but went ahead and followed.. I'm glad i got to your video! It hasn't been that long since i got my hamster so know i will take proper care of its bedding. Thank you!
i used shredded up toilet paper as bedding sinve where i live the only other option was wood shavings. it was soft and cheap, confy as heck to. i just used my food processor to shred it until it was paper bedding size lol
@@adream5945 im afraid they could pull the strings and get tangled, the reason why nesting material is dangerous, plus they could borrow in the toilet paper :)

I’ve been binge watching your videos cause I’m trying to convince my parents and prove my case! I can kinda tell it’s working! Me: I WILL NOT REST UNTIL I GET A HAMSTER
When making the lil toilet paper hideout you can spread little bits of peanut butter on it and put seeds between the layers because they're gonna destroy it anyway and they might as well have fun and get some seeds :)
For me I don’t quite mind spending money on animals Sure they aren’t always gonna use it but as long as they enjoy it That’s what matters of course if you see a very very very expensive toy that you can make yourself That’s fine! I do that there’s no point in spending hundreds for something you can make yourself! For me what I love to do is use fish props for my hamsters props, Great video tori!
Good tip is to get the Petco app and scan things on the app most of the time the items are cheeper online so ask the cashier to price match. I just did this on the correct bedding. Hope this helps! Thank you for the awesome videos :)
i love you . you convinced my mom to upgrade my critter trail to a bin cage, my campbell dwarf will love it. she also says that I do not need alot of bedding but i always add in more anyways . Do a video on what a tame hamster is. LOVE YA
Congrats! I'm so happy for you and your Hammy. It always makes me happy to see "finally upgraded from the pet store cage" because of how many "my hamster seems fine in his 5 critter trails" I see

Me - Ok.
*About 1 week later when the hamster is tamed*
Me - walks into the room.
Mom - Oh I love you so so much Pumpkin!
So relatable 🤣
aha!
Hahaha same my mom was like "You must take care of the hamster, pay for everything, and I will NOT clean the cage or deal with the hamster at all" Then one week later I walk in on her with my hamster playing with him and a bunch of cardboard tubes and whispering "You are mine and I love you..."
Yep. That was my mom
This helped so much, I thought I had to clean once a week
omg me too but i stopped
Congrats! Proud of you for being so responsible!
I'm getting a hamster in like 5 minutes you have really helped me learn how to take care of a hamster.
Do you have your hamster now :0,WHATS THE BABIES NAME?
How’s he doing?

OMG I WAS I WAS JUST SHOPPING ON AMAZON FOR BUDGET HAMSTER STUFF THANK YOUUUUU
The paper bedding is extremely cheap.. 30 dollors for 99L.. I wish I can get it in Malaysia.. After converting rate just RM130+. I'm hunger for the paper bedding.
Alex Chan Ee Beng you can make your own using toilet paper shreds! Or use aspen shavings in 2/3 of the cage and toilet paper shreds in the other 1/3!
@@Ashleywhistl don't use shredded toilet paper for all the bedding! its not very good for burrowing
check out shopee! theres a seller that sells a 60L bag of hemp bedding for rm90, a lil cheaper than the kaytee aspen/clean &cozy (which they also sell). theres also another seller that sells a 10L bag of aspen for rm10 too, so easily get 100L for rm100. save up to buy the bedding, it'll be worth it in the long run. harap ni dpt tolong awk!
I knowwwww, thats the reason why i cant afford a hamster
Takes me 2-$20 bags of off brand paper bedding to clean my whole enclosure with 8-10 inches of bedding depth. My baby loves to burrow.. for me bedding is the most expensive expense for my hamster. Sometimes I mix aspen with my paper bedding but my hammy isn’t a fan of aspen she much rather just the paper bedding
if i haven't found your channel, my hamster would have bad stuff. YOU SAVED MY HAMMYS LIFE!
I have 3 hamsters and you have really changed their lives 😊thx
Hey Victoria! I have an idea for you! Once summer is over, you should do a reacting to classroom pets!
Like videos of them? or just my thoughts? I personally think no pet should be a classroom pet :(
Victoria Raechel
Kind of like what you did for reacting to our hamster cages. Ask for a picture and see if they meet the requirements and give your feedback. (Most of them don’t☹️) And it could be like a little message that you don’t believe that people should keep hamsters and classroom pets.
Victoria Raechel Tyler Rugge did something like that. You could watch his video and kind of do the same thing😀
YESSSSSSSSSS
Victoria Raechel my teacher has a guinea pig as a class pet & she personally adores her!
I actually just got a hamster today and i love her so much!
jordyn jade Thats so nice!

I just realized how much she blinked in this video😂
Probably trying to remember things, I tend to blink when I try to remember things
Ok so we did everything wrong!
A) impulse purchased hamster
B) at a pet store
C) bought the tiny tales castle for him on clearance
D) got him a ball and totally stressed him out with it
E) tried to handle him the first day and got bit, as deserved
F) tiny layer of bedding.
Thanks!
No as long as one of the connected cages is easy to access and has water
Your hamster will eventually discover a whole new enclosure for him to live in.
Why no ball?
I'm sad! When my hamster was alive my mom would MAKE me clean her cage once a week, or I was grounded from screens. I am getting a new hamster soon, thanks for the advice. :)
Me too and when i told her its only spot cleaning she would threaten to sell my hamster😓
@Kira IDV
That’s not very cash money of your mom
“there is no such thing as a free pet” tell that to my pet rock😂
It cost money to make that rock tho :0

My hamster died about a year ago and this was my favourite channel to watch I am finally ready to start planning for another one
Thank you for the tips Sarah!
Victoria: there’s no such thing as a free pet

what about the ducks at the park

Ive been wanting a hamster for a while now and now im very tempted after watching your videos. I had no idea they needed so much space and im glad I stumbled across you before I adopted one. I absolutely LOVE your videos and how informative you are, thank you!
Glad you could find my channel!
You should make a video "reacting to try not to laugh hamster videos". They're all full of bad hamster care and a lot of people laugh at those and I think someone like you should make a video on that. A lot of them are problematic
@Abrisa poudel to the poor hamster??
@Abrisa poudel what
For bedding, if you buy bedding when it is on sale it is way cheaper. It seems like a different type of bedding is always on sale so buy the sale bedding (as long as it is safe)
I got my son his first hamster and now feel guilty cause I had chance her bedding 3 times in the last month. Am definitely spot cleaning from now on.

Then yesterday I started taking him. thank you so much a hamster came into my care about a month ago she was only going to stay with me for a week or two but after i saw the care that her previous owner gave to her i talked the owner into letting me keep her and i am now trying to find cheap ways to give her a better life first step is a proper cage
why are these videos so addicting
My mom wouldn't let me get a big cage.. she bought a tiny tales.. he bites the rails.. I'm scared for his well being. I don't know what to do

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO. I NEEDED THIS SOOOOO BADLY, AND THANK YOU FOR SAY THAT YOU COULD GET STUFF FROM DOLLAR STORES. YOU ARE SOOOOOOOOOO HELPFUL I DIDN'T EVEN THINK OF DOLLAR STORES.
I bought a bin cage today because i am a child with almost no money, and it is a very good size and this video helped
I have four hamsters, it's hard but worth it ♥️
Same it can be hard but it's worth it 🧡👍
Thank you for making this.
It will make your cage setup cheaper and unique!!
every single cent i get i spend on pet things because i want a mouse
hello we got the same pfp
I'm totally going to make a new hamster cage! The cage I have currently is a critter trail cage for my syrian hamster and I feel so bad for keeping her in it. This video was very helpful!

I don’t even have a hamster or any other rodent, I just love watching videos like this!
Why not try kitchen towels? They are better than toilet paper shreds and lasts longer :)
@@adream5945 im afraid they could pull the strings and get tangled, the reason why nesting material is dangerous, plus they could borrow in the toilet paper :)
But kitchen towels haven't got strings😂it's almost like toilet paper just harder to tear off. I use it and I'm very sure it is safe. I've tried toilet paper too but its not very good at absorbing
@@adream5945 oh, i didnt see kitchen towels, i thought you were talking about regular ones. still, hamsters are natural burrowers, id take enrichment over practicity; but thats the owners call! if it works for you, it works for you :)

Maybe it got a little too wet and molded over the years, or mossed up(moss grew on it). Next time you should get more rocks so that this rock wouldn't die from depression! I'm so sorry for your loss though
My philosophy if you can’t afford the pet don’t buy it 😂

But youll have to buy a drill
Aww i love your hamsters💙💙
Thank you!
When making the lil toilet paper hideout you can spread little bits of peanut butter on it and put seeds between the layers because they're gonna destroy it anyway and they might as well have fun and get some seeds :)
I really like the bin cage idea because in the UK large enclosures are very expensive and I want to it plenty of room
For me I don’t quite mind spending money on animals
Sure they aren’t always gonna use it but as long as they enjoy it
That’s what matters of course if you see a very very very expensive toy that you can make yourself
That’s fine! I do that there’s no point in spending hundreds for something you can make yourself!
