I had hamsters as a kid (back in the 1970s), and knew a fair amount about them (for the times, but obviously we know much more about them today). I just got a hamster about 3 weeks ago (Mr. Data, after the Star Trek character--he's so kind, innocent, and lovable, like a hamster!), and I started watching your videos shortly thereafter. I have learned SO MUCH! I've upgraded him from a standard hamster cage to a two-level DIY enclosure made from two stacked containers connected by a tube: lower level for nesting and burrowing, upper level for feeding, foraging, drinking, sand-bathing, exercise-wheeling, and various other enrichment activities, like your idea for a hamster piñata made from a willow ball. He's still not entirely used to me--he knows I'm the treat guy and will come up to me to get them, but he still won't let me pick him up. That's ok, I can tell he's doing well, and he's not showing any of the stress-related behaviors you described in another video. So, thank you very much, Victoria, from myself and Mr Data! Love your videos, keep it up!
By the way, you don't look like Ed Sheeran. More like Scarlett Johansson, I'd say

I recently came across your channel and it made me realize that my hamster's cage is too small and he doesn't have enough enrichment! I even got him the absolute biggest cage that the pet store offered, but he still only has 350 inches of floor space and only 4 inches of bedding. I'm un-learning a lot of misinformation and I'm gathering up materials to make a giant, 50 gallon size hamster cage. I've got the perfect space in my office for it, too! Thank you for all this information. I'm happy to know my hamster is going to have a much better life.

Its because of your channel I was able to finally try my best at giving my hams what they deserve. Its been hard, since Im on a tight budget, but Ive been trying so so hard. I managed to upgrade from a 50 x 30cm cage to one over 100 x 50 (we stuffed up the measurements slightly since its a diy cage but we know its over that!). Im saving for the savic plaza for my other ham currently. Id get him bigger than the savic but its all I have space for as I have a very small room and I can hardly walk already with one of mines enclosures! They now actually HAVE wheels, sand baths, different substrates (beech chips, coco fibre), a cork log and ill be getting more soon, more chews, hides, sprays etc. I cannot thank you enough and even if im still learning a lot Im trying my best because of you. Their diets improved a bit (went from plain pellets to harry hamster mixed with mealworms) and they finally got forage and healthy treats! So thank you so much, im gonna be forever grateful.

I’ve always given my hamsters a bottle and a bowl for water because they always kick their bedding in their bowl or spill it/walk in it so I wanted to be sure they had a drink while I was at work. Most of my hamsters prefer the bowl but I have one that always goes for the bottle.
Also it sucks that your kaytee has gone dusty. Mine is fine but I do use the brown version so bc I’m not sure what the white one is like now days.

You really helped me a lot with setting everything up and making the right choices. It is really interesting to find out that a lot of the supplies in the US or Canada are toxic or filled with sugar. In Europe the rules are soo strict, so it would actually be hard to find a treat with sugar in it here. Love your videos! Regarding the semitransparent igloos, hamsters actually only have one color receptor in their eyes (whereas we have three and other rodents have two), so they can't see most colors. Which means that if, say, only red light is shining through bc the igloo is red, it will just be dark to them! Red light in general isn't seen by mice/rats/etc, but hamsters see even fewer colors than their relatives. Obviously the plastic issue remains though...

      @Luxrayspirit ปีที่แล้ว

@@VictoriaRaechel Yes, I know! But because the igloos are colored, mostly only that color light is passing through and hamsters don't see that light (for most colors). It's just dark and opaque to them. It's good in situations where you need to be able to monitor them without waking them up or otherwise making them feel like they lack privacy 😀

@@VictoriaRaechel Light might not be a problem for hamsters. I have a Savic metro hamster heaven cage. I offer 2 nesting houses for my Syrian hamster, but she doesn't either of them. Instead, she sleeps in the tunnel system. Yes, really! She sleeps in the top section of tunnel system, the part that's suspended above the cage. And the tubing, as you know, is clear plastic and completely transparent. If light bothered her, then she'd obviously choose a different place to sleep.

I'm most worried about what kind of bedding to get for my future hamster. Thinking Dwarf Roborovski from all the research I've done. I bought a big glass enclosure for one, had a lot of good reviews. Looking at other things I need to get for it, such as the wheel, house, toys and decor. But especially worried about getting the right type of bedding, because I don't want to risk the hamster getting hurt or sick. After watching the video I definitely decided on a few things I was considering to get before, toys wise, as a no. So that was very helpful :).

Am I the only one that thinks it would be a good idea if Victoria did a video/video series where she chooses a certain hamster which would probably be the Syrian since it’s the most popular. Then she could choose like a budget maybe like $300-$500 not including cost of hamster. Then she could make plans/Kit where she tells her recommended supplies for the hamster with the budget. For example she could find Amazon cage and all the supplies on online stores and basically showcase what combination of them would be good.

Hi! I know this idea would be a lot different than what you normally do but do you think you could do a hair care video? Or at least let me know what you do for your hair. I have been researching other options outside of shampoo and I haven't found anything that works well for myself yet. I adore your channel and I would love to build a cage like yours and get a hamster very soon. Thank you for all of the links for the products you use and for all of the valuable information!

Love your videos ❤️ When I go to pets at home I march straight past the tiny pets store cages and then turn to glare at the Cotton fluff and the pin and honey logs and hides :(

Mine (also already a one year old ham hams) like flax and silver millet like crazy, literally as soon as I put it in, he ransacked it immediately. So… I just put in a little of it once every 2-3days.😅.

Personnally I prefer a water bottle because with a bowl she makes a mess and poops in the bowl.😂I used fluff but it seemed to give her eye problems. This video is very useful!😊👍🐹

I've never had a problem with Kaytee bedding and it's still what I use, but I bought that brand's "Natural" bedding one time and it went straight to the trash! I was allergic to it, so I can only imagine how my hams would have reacted.

Hey! What brand/type of bedding would you recommend from Petco? We also tried the Kaytee cozy one and it seemed really dusty.

hey victoria! i recently got the kaytee clean and cozy and i didn't see this video until after i got rid of it. i have a pretty prominent dust allergy, and this just made my allergies go insane. i've been looking around and trying to find a good, safe, preferably inexpensive bedding that won't make my allergies go insane. Do you have any recomendations?

What's up! I need a good cage recommendation for my Russian dwarf hasmter , Sergei. Right now hes in a drawer habitat I made. The drawer works and is 17x14×10.5 inches. It's OK for temporary but not enough room as I've learned from your videos. He has a 5.5 inch wheel, a sand bath, water bottle, food bowl, house, a small plastic tube to run through, and 3.5 inches of bedding. What's a good habitat for my little guy that will give him enough room? And does he need a bigger wheel? He likes the one he has i think, but then again I thought a drawer would be big enough for him and was wrong about that so I dont know. Any recommendations appreciated

Is red rice okay for hamsters to eat? I tried searching it but I could only find results for white rice and I don’t know if they’re different

Random question, but do you think you could maybe provide information in a future video, on how to clean your wooden enclosers after a hamsters death or if you have to move a new hamster into that encloser? I can’t think of any ideas that would be possible for cleaning since you can’t really use water.

I currently have two cats, and probably not enough space for a properly sized container at the moment, but I wouldn’t be opposed to someday having a hampster.
