So many people want you to succeed around the world, and the fact that local companies are helping you to achieve your dream is fabulous. I don't know how you do all these beams day after day. Moving right along though. All the new views and angles are so beautiful. You make a lot of people very happy with the renovation. It's heart breaking to see a majestic building left to ruin. And enormously uplifting to see the reverse.
The heating system is almost exactly what the Romans used; the hypocaust. The Romans heated the floors as well as installing tubes to bring heat upward, warming the walls and the air. It still remains in Roman Baths that are still in use today. It has been called the world's first central heating system. It was invented in several parts of the world at different times, the Chinese used the same design, who knows where else it might have been used. It would have been useful to the ancient communities living in the Andes. Living in cold climates keep people busily inventing ways to stay warm!
Use some pieces of roof slate to pack under the joists when levelling them, you need something that won’t compress over time when there is weight on the floor. A builder did that in my house when putting in new concrete lintels over the windows.
Because the slate was compressed when it was formed and won't compress any more?
@@tammiewilson5185 Yes, he has been using a combination of small stones and lime. The lime, because it is a mixture, can lose its rigidity over time and shift. Slate, because it is a stone, will not lose its rigidity. Also, slate because of its smooth, flat nature makes a perfect substance to lay underneath.

Dan, pick up another ladder at least and over the long term of Reno maybe a temporary stair where main stairs used to be. Because you're looking at years of work also some kind of shute on outside wall to dispose of waste as you want to handle it as little as possible. With the tall scaffolding he will be a lot safer and getting up and down will be easier too.

It's time to build an outbuilding for volunteers. There are so many craftsmen and women willing to donate time, sweat and tears toward your effort, Dan. Build that bunkhouse.

Squatting is a huge problem in France, hence why so many Chateaus that need volunteer help just don’t entertain the idea. Frustrating for the honest skilled volunteers.
Safety could be real problem if others worked on site. Don't know about France but in NZ I believe you would have to have proper job safety plans and appropriate gear even for volunteers. If contractors were working it would be for certain.
And the sanitation. They would need toilets, showers, running water. Can't have them all crapping in the woods.
From a french pov, your accent when talking french is very funny, I love it, it differs a bit from the cliche british accent

It's starting to go more quickly on the rebuild now. You must be delighted with the progress. May all the surprises at the Chateau from here on out be good ones!
I really hope a structural engineer will come visit the chateau at every stage to make sure all the work done so far is all right, so nothing collapses or has to be undone then redone in the future.
You obviously put way too much trust in 'officials'. They are in fact just normal human beings with a certain opinion. If you are unlucky, they also have the power to stop you in your work because in their opinion you're not doing the right thing. On the other hand, having the approval of an official is never a guarantee that you actually are doing the right thing. They are just paid to be a nuisance. Just do your own proper research, and be knowledgeable in the things you do. I trust Dan much more than I would some nosy French official.
@@klaasvanmanen8214 That's one of the dumbest things I have ever read here. Honest building inspectors, and there are some dishonest ones of course, prevent disaster and even could save lives. It's not just an "opinion", it's an informed opinion.

This is like an archeological dig! So many cool things being revealed. I notice that in the last couple of weeks your views have increased a lot. That is so great. I would love it if you would do a video focused on the process you have to go through to undertake a job like this-what does the French government require in the way of permits and inspections? Did you have to have a structural engineer do a study of some sort before you could start? How did you even know how to proceed, what order to do things? And what is the general order of steps for the near future? And most of all, I'd love your personal thoughts on what made you think you could do this! You're doing it, for sure, but what gave you the confidence?

Suggestions: Laser levelling tool (sends laser across the wall) - mark everything before install; second consider both sides of the interior wall for shared walls and floor joists - you may want to notch the end to receive the next beam on the other side

Those pipes from the former hot-air heating system - sound almost ideal for running pipes and wiring to the upper floor levels - especially if the bathrooms are near by.

I think you are on the right track with your idea that the in-wall pipes are part of the heating system. I have a masonry house dating from 1885 that has similar ducts built into the masonry walls. They lead to heating registers as well as cold air returns. The system was fed by a coal-fired boiler in the sub-basement. That boiler was exhausted by a chimney built within the party wall on the side of the house. You may find a chimney opening in an exterior wall once you are able to reach the roof line.
Dan your eyes light up as you impart more information about the history of this once beautiful home to us, and will be once again under your capable hands. I enjoyed watching you interact with the builder who obviously likes and respects you. I'm sure the people in the area are happy that you have undertaking this mammoth task too, especially those who remember what it once looked like. I dont speak another language Dan and applaud you for your efforts. Well done lad and God bless you.❤

This is a proper builder's merchant. They would have experience using their own products besides knowing all the details of the products themselves. That's how they know a) what is needed and b) the most appropriate version for this job.
Brick is the equivalent of Home Depot. That's where Dan went for supplies for the farmhouse. This project requires a higher standard of supplies and a lower material cost.

Glad that you think I was right in saying that the pipes in the walls were for heating the rooms, as they were in the place we stayed at in Brittany, all those years ago. The lovely fire would be lite there in the kitchen, and we could all feel the hot air coming through the vents into our bedrooms - it was the only heating at the time. Does anyone know why Dan trusts that the very rusty metal beams filled with concrete between the 2 granite(?) columns is secure and able to support those wooden cross beams for decades to come?? I mean the concrete elsewhere has deteriorated,. Can rusted out metal beams be rehabilitated to last for years to come?

Interesting comments regarding those chases in the walls as clearly cast iron rads everywhere. Perhaps a retrofit, or an old lady who was cold in her chateau!
Yes, the radiators might have been fitted later, possibly even by Mironnet in the late 60s.

I think he wants to build scaffolding in the stairwell area, which hopefully includes stairs. That will let him access the top part of the walls to repair them.

@@ginettesnell8084 The one next to the water tank definitely is one (you can clearly see the small sink-style drain and holes for the hot and cold taps) and I'm 99% sure the one in the remaining bathroom is a bidet too from the shape and the pipes going up to the taps. I wonder how old these are. They've got a 1920s/30s vibe to me but it seems to make the most sense that Mironnet put them in when he bought the place in 1967 (as far as I can tell Gilberte Bardet owned it until she passed that year but probably didn't live in the château) unless they were installed by the OSE in 1939. It's not even certain these small rooms were bathrooms during the OSE era though. Between 1945 and 1960 Gilberte apparently rented out the château as holiday accommodation.

The builders group that is helping with materials is a huge support. As you say, it’s reassuring to have local tradespeople offer ideas and advice on how you are doing ( especially when it appears your job is coming along well!). Getting the beams and floors installed is huge in making the upper levels safer to access. We do love for you to be safe!🫣
Hi Dan, Not sure if you will restore the old heating system but if you don't you may find the old "piping" between floors can make an ideal method to pass through electrical wires and maybe even plumbing if plastic water pipes are used in France. This will save an enormous amount walls chasing and filling and will avoid ugly conduits. Just a thought. Love you channel.
Yes, the ducts would be ideal for adding en-suite bathrooms to the rooms across the stairs! And of course for running all sorts of electrics.

I hope you negotiated some nice wholesale pricing from the builder's merchant. You're doing a pretty major job, they should give you a hefty discount if you buy basically everything through them. And good god do you need a new scaffold, that one is so rickety I wouldn't want you to use that going forward. The last major renovation job we did was going to take us at least 3 years so we bought a scaffolding company that was going out of business for an absolute song just for the access to their inventory so we could have our own scaffolding up for the whole time without paying an arm and a leg for it if we rented it. Then we sold it all on when we were done. Saved us a fortune. For you, that is definitely worth thinking about.

I rebuilt a house that was originally build in the 1920's and finally getting a finished roof on it was possibly the best day of the whole build. We took it all the way back to the outer brick walls and foundation but none of the work it took to rebuild it work compared to being in the house during the first rain storm and knowing that I wasn't going to have a flood inside.
