Nick is such an artist, driving his heavy machinery. He does it with so much ease and elegance. It’s delightful to watch.

Husband thought it would be a good idea to plant ivy at our previous home. Several years later, I pulled it out by the roots to be sure it was finally gone. Hate hate hate ivy. Thanks for showing the damage ivy causes to trees.

I love learning about the trees from Nick, he really knows his stuff. Tree area will be amazing when he is comfortable that all the dangers have been addressed and the young saplings get enough light to grow properly.

There might have been a common septic system for the château and the gate lodge and since the lodge is much further down the hill it would have made a lot of sense to put the system somewhere near the lodge.
Cameron speaks! 👏 Dan is truly fortunate to have Nik and Cameron to help. Somehow, I think arborist school didn't include septic tank hunting and concrete footings, but these guys didn't seem to mind helping. Every time I watch them trimming the trees I think of old tales of woodsmen - a trade we can't relate to these days. They also remind me a lot of Robin Hood tales as they know the forest so well and how it works. Their art takes skill, knowledge, sensitivity, great strength, and courage. When they are in the trees it's like a circus high-wire act, with no net, and not as safe. I so admire their knowledge and skill! I suspect there aren't many like them around for Dan to have found for love nor money.

I had 54 tons of that crushed stone/cement mix put down over a stone road...you're going to love it. That big maple had its day, take it down before it does damage. Great that Nick knows so much about trees.... applauding your efforts ad=nd hard work from NW Georgia, USA.

I don't think the ivy damaged the tree, it just hid the damage, at least that's how I understood Nick.

My guess is they would have put the fosse septic at the back of the chateau. Those pipes are probably the run off pipes for grey water only coming from the chateau roof and gutters to a filtration bed.
Yes, especially since the pipe they started from lines up quite nicely with the remains of the gutter downpipe visible at 7:40.
I knew Ivy did damage on buildings but now I have seen what it can do to fully mature trees by totally destroying them from the inside. Thank you Nick I have learned so much regarding woodland management and safety watching you. Dan you are learning every day something new, and now Septic tank plan B in focus. I was so shocked to see that stick sink into the trunk of the tree! I had no idea ivy was such a destructive force; generally, I think it's atmospheric and all the green is pretty. Not so. This was fascinating. And the maze that represents your plumbing was another little interesting puzzle. Thanks for the frequent updates. I'm riveted.

Dan, honestly your filming is incredible....... loved the close ups of the insects on the leaves. Fabulous job to see and hear Nick with the tree management and that shot of the ivy on the tree..... who knew the damage it can do. I love watching you bring this building back to life! Your attention to every detail is a joy to behold. Have you considered using a pastry-bag method to pipe the lime into the gaps around the boards rather than trying to spoon/wedge it in with a trowel? You could then use the trowel to smooth it out. I'm not sure how thick/dense the mix is, but if it's anywhere between the consistency of thick cake icing and an extrudable soft modeling clay, then gallon-sized disposable freezer bags with a bottom corner cut off would probably be plenty sturdy enough to serve as "pastry" bags for the lime mix, and to apply, you'd simply trowel the mix into the bag through the top, then point the cut-corner opening into whatever hole you need the lime in and squeeze. If it works, it would likely go a lot faster than scooping bits in with a trowel a little at a time.
I have thought about this as I decorate cakes. The problem with piping bags is refilling them. It's messy and interrupts the work flow. I plop a pile of frosting in a line onto a piece of plastic wrap, roll it up, snip off the end, and put the "plug" into the piping bag to refill it. It's a lot quicker and less messy that way. I don't think you can do that with mortar?
Working in the rain is annoying. Glad you still made progress on the chores despite the weather.
Now…I know nothing about building, but a bit about cake making…could you use a large piping bag to get the lime mortar into the gaps…quick and easy…and then you know the ‘hole’ is filled and you just make it look pretty/tidy it up at the end 😎

Well done yet again. I’m so glad that you emphasised the danger of Ivy. The late Queen of England would not allow Ivy to grow unchecked on any of the royal estates. Where I live in South Devon - on the edge of Dartmoor, Ivy is rapidly changing the habitat and the landscape as so many ivy covered trees are dying and falling down.
I have watched you from day one and never missed a video. I really admire and appreciate all you have accomplished. You are a real inspiration Dan. I have renovated abandoned places. Ivy doesn't kill trees. It colonises trees that are sick or dying. It forms a part of a forest ecosystem and supports a lot of biodiversity. A lot of misinformation is continually spread about it.

OMG I am sooo envious of all that lovely rich black soil! I have none at my place. For the most part, Australia doesn't have lovely soil. It has crappy dead soil. Old and worn out. While your soil is so young and vibrant (on the greater scale of things, that is.) And to think you are just throwing it away! Even if it is going to the new carpark. It is still ending up out of use. Would not happen here. It would be sieved to remove the bit and pieces, then set aside for future garden needs. And the gravel would be purchased to fill the carpark.
Or could it be that the trees that fell over in the storm were already damaged or compromised so the ivy took advantage. The ivy was the secondary issue, not the primary issue. Trees growing in cityscapes or house gardens are unlikely to be 100% sound in anycase.
I know you're not going to like it, but you need to find the septic tank and have it drained/maintenance and fill the leech line holes with gravel so it can properly drain. I've had one back up on me while I was taking a shower....not nice and not cheap.

Neighbors planted ivy to cover an area and 30 years later it has worked it way through a green belt with 70+ year old fir trees invasive stuff and nick taking the time to show it is educational
Ivy ground cover also.... covers up the rodent critters living under there! No thank you!
It reminds me of invasive Japanese Knotweed growing on our property. Started out as a tiny plant. Now it is everywhere. And we don't have the funds to have it eradicated. So it continues to invade year after year. 🇨🇦

I live in the southwest desert region of the USA and I’m fascinated with the moss on the trees. I’ve seen it in other areas but I’m always fascinated by it. The world is beautiful. TFS

In many old buildings they used something called a dry sink instead of a septic tank. That at least was common practice here in the states during the first half of 20th century.
Since the pipes are all PVC I don't think the system is older than the late 1960s, possibly even newer.
Your are following the drain field for an older type septic system. Same kind my mother had. There will be a tank someplace close to the building. Out of that is where the two drain fields run out from. Solid waste stays in the tank and the rest goes out into the drain field. If it isn't used, the tank will dry up and nothing goes out into the drains. If by chance the tank gets too full, then you have to have it pumped. It operates by letting the liquified waste drain out into the field which then percolates down through the soil. The soil acts as the cleaner of the waste before it gets into ground water.
You can find the septic tank by hireing a skilled dowser. He finds the tank where pointing sticks turn outwards. If I was closer I would help!

I think they're following a rainwater downpipe, not the actual black water drains.

@@LaReynedeNeige Perhaps because it was easier to dig a shallow trench and let the water drain down the hill instead of digging a soakaway.
I take that back though, in today's video you can clearly see that the toilets drained into that external pipe so it's definitely sewage, not rainwater, or at least not only rainwater.

Dan, I’ve got an extraordinarily good idea for you, it just popped into my head and I’ve got to get it out there. It’s about creating an arch system to cover and rainproof the whole house. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the ‘ Chernobyl arch’, but this is exactly what they have used to ‘ waterproof’ that site. An arch on rails, maybe in two sections, two trenches for the base, at the sides. Now how we create the spans? Wood maybe? And what covering, transparent sheet? I just don’t know. Yet.

My sewage system isn't on my property either due to the way property was divided and sold, but I have no problems, it's readily accessible. You can perhaps come to an arrangement with the neighbour, in the short term at least, because a new up to date system suitable for supporting a large building could be rather expensive.
