I've tried a lot of eating experiments-- no sugar, intermittent fasting, etc. I guess you could call some of them diets. And I really think I have better eating habits now. I maintain a healthy weight, I don't over indulge as often, and I generally feel better. But also, I still eat whatever I want from time to time and it's fine. I decided to compile a bunch of things I learned. I hope it helps.

I try to make my classes as fun as weezy's videos. The issue is that weezy takes a loooooong time to make a 10 minute video. That's not a bad thing, it's just how long it takes to make 10 tight comedic informative minutes of content. A teacher has to write a *lot* of content (up to 25 hours) per week. We do our best but it's a lot.

There's definitely a Mirror Universe Craig making videos like “I got drunk every day for a month” and “I ate sugar for 30 days straight,” and he probably hates beards and works in a bald eagle rehabilitation center for punched eagles.

Lesson 1: Craig is objectively funny and I should watch more WheezyWaiter.
Lesson 2: Habits (and particularly eating habits) are something you have to practice, and have patience with. I've had to change my diet for medical reasons recently and it's been annoying as HELL and it's so hard not to get discouraged. I think about just quitting often and hoping for the best. But the reminder to practice and be kind to myself is so so helpful.
Lesson 3: We all need to help Craig become the space baby so that Firefly will come back.

In the past year I've started exercising regularly, and eating more healthfully, I've lost like 40lbs this year, and I'm honestly enjoying the food I eat now more than the food I was eating before.
The key for me was realizing that supposedly unhealthy foods can be part of a healthy diet, if eaten in reasonable quantities along with more conventionally healthy items, and that the real enemy wasn't the stuff I really loved (homemade pizza), it was the stuff I only kind of enjoyed, but was really easy to get (frozen/delivery pizza).
Odds are, most of the meal choices you make in a week are more about convenience than about enjoyment, so if you make healthy food convenient, you'll eat it more often. Then, when you do really want an enjoyable meal, get something great that will make you truly happy, not a $3 blob of chocolate flavored bread and corn syrup from the gas station.

These are great tips, I want to add that for people who really struggle with food and weight and compulsive eating, there is probably trauma involved. Trauma is a lot more common than we think. I recommend the book "Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving". Food is the very first thing we had as children to sooth our anxiety, and that stays with us for life until we deal with the source of the anxiety.

I spent about 2 years eating incredibly strictly and barely had cheat meal. Hell, I didn’t have bread for an entire year. I picked up like 10kg of muscle and I looked incredible.
But you know what? I was miserable. I hated eating and every meal felt like a chore to get through. And when I did “cheat” I would hate myself
Fast forward a couple of years and now I still eat “clean” but I don’t eat purely for function anymore. I now eat to enjoy the food I make. It’s still “healthy” but it’s nice
Also, like you, intermittent fasting has made me really be able to maybe eat like once a day or whatever but that meal I do eat slaps! I also bake some type of bread every week and have really gotten into baking cup cakes and other confections
The way I changed my relationship with food really pulled me away from my depression and I so I couldn’t agree more with this video!

I suffer from really bad depression so my over eating gets out of control sometimes. I lost 60lbs but gained 1/3 back because of it. I beat myself up severely for ruining my hard work. Been trying to get back into it but it's hard. Sometimes hearing someone say it's okay to fail and try again is wholesome enough to give me hope that one day it'll come together again. I'm glad you've figured out what works for you! Here's to a year figuring this life out and finally being happy with ourselves. ♡

The one big tip I can give is: variety.
    Oh and calorie restriction.
But the second one is more complicated than it seems because you have to know what your real maintenance calories are.
When I was younger I ate 1900 calories because I didn't know anything other than I needed to eat less than what I normally did (I am a 200 lbs man).
    This was a mistake.
When I became a 250 lbs man (because I eventually gave up on my 1900 calorie diet) I figured a few things out.
My maintenance calories are probably close to 2900 (I am decently active, big muscles, etc).
That means I was cutting 1000 calories a day (1/3rd of my daily calorie needs) so my body thought I was starving all the time and it made me miserable.
So I ended up yo-yo dieting by accident. A strict 5 day schedule at 1900 cals a day and then who knows how much on the weekend! Consistency is better than restriction and binge. Trust me.
For the last 245 days, I trimmed my cals back to 2300 per day, everyday (with 100 cal variation based on mood/hunger). Variety was key, high volume meals (vegetables, fruits, whole grains) combined with high calorie fun stuff (mostly baked goods like bread and treats - pure sugars like candy/pop just makes you too hungry and had weird side effects like water retention and pimples).
I'm still losing weight but I did it slowly this time and retained a bunch of muscle. Took about 3 months to notice it in my clothes. But it was controlled and pleasant. 2300 a day. No binging. I get to eat pasta, curries, flat breads, butter (within reason), cheese, eggs, chicken, potatoes (lots of potatoes), and all the bake goods you could imagine (only rule is we have to make it ourselves and we're not allowed to cut corners: has to be full fat, full carb awesomeness.
We get as much cake as our daily calories will allow.
You could eat cake for the whole calorie alotment though i wouldn't recommend it. There's a sweet spot where you get a nice-sized piece without comprising on your other needs. If you do eat all your calories in cake you feel like poopy.
We do best with around 10-15% of calories going to dessert/sweets every day.
It has worked really well. Best "diet:" I've ever had but this was hard won after years of research and fitness. So far so good.
Wow. That was a lot. Bye.

  • @WhatsBliss
    @WhatsBliss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I'll add my tip: I've found that weighing intermittently is more effective at keeping me motivated than weighing daily. Weight can fluctuate a lot day to day for random things you can't really account for (or shouldn't have to). Weighing only a couple times a month gives a better snapshot on progress than daily check-in, in my experience.
Also, slow sustained weightloss stays off better! And it's accomplishable with more modest health goals, like adding 15 minutes of exercise to your day and eating out less. I've lost 20lbs over 8 months, which isn't fast, but I didn't gain weight over the holidays despite basically throwing diet goals out the window. I feel less like I'm trying to manipulate my body and more like I'm trying to grow into a healthier one.

This feels like a particularly a propos message for the start of February… mindful eating, and acknowledging that I am maintaining my weight, has been a big part of raising my self-esteem in the past year or so. Allowing myself to indulge in treats, and to feel good about the yummy deliciousness of said treat, has been key to a lot of happiness during the pandemic for me ☺️ It stopped me from falling into a negative cycle of guilty eating.

the thing that got me to being more put together in healthy was just general goals (like you mention) and being kind to myself (also like you mention). Beating yourself up because you didn't eat enough carrots isn't going to help you be a better person, you can just eat carrots tomorrow. Its okay. The point is to keep trying, and if something doesn't work for you, try something else.
To me, life isn't a ladder to be climbed in discrete measurable steps, its a direction you walk. And its okay to stop and smell the flowers, as long as you keep going in the right direction in the end.

I too have learned that my focus on eating right and moving ebbs and flows. I used to feel bad when I would get off the exercise bandwagon but now I know, I'll get back into it when I'm ready and that's ok. Extremely few people exercise regularly their whole lives, so let's not set ourselves up with unrealistic goals.

This was so nice and was perfect timing for me to hear. I've also had shorter periods of time where I count calories, and it works very well for me. Once in a while I weigh myself, and if my weight start to go up, I'll start counting calories again. I'm actually in a period with this now, and I just reached my "normal" weight. This is the first time though, that I feel like it's ok if I can't maintain it at all times, and I accept that I sometimes need to do this. So thank you for reinforcing my self acceptance.

Thank you wheezy, for always being able to phrase life's big anxieties, in a way that is informative and funny, that makes me actually want to tackle the problem with kindness and understanding, instead of with anger and misguidance. and the funnies make that easier, somehow. this and the inspiration video are gonne be bookmarks in my tab from now on.

it's interesting how some people like Craig can do diets/challenges like these and learn something positive from them and other people tend to spiral into unhealthy behaviors/habits due to restriction. I wonder why

Thank you. I’ve watched a few of your videos and this one solidified why I enjoy your content. You remind me of Marshal Rosenberg’s statement, “Don’t do anything that isn’t fun.” (Or something like that… I cannot find the exact words). Fun doesn’t mean it has to be easy. And you look like you enjoy your challenges. Thank you for sharing your time experiences.
